Larry Wants us to Run More

Brown prods the starters to run more

An interesting comment, pre-game, from Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown about tempo: Brown said the public perception that he's a walk-it-up coach is wrong. Brown says he's prodding his starters to look to run more, and that they're not as willing to do that as the reserves.

“In spite of what people might think, I want us to run every play,'' Brown said. "You get more time to use the clock, if you run effectively (it’s a disincentive for opponents) to go to the offensive boards and you get relatively good shots before the defense is set.

“But saying it and doing it are two different things. It takes a lot of effort to run on every play. That’s really a challenge for us. Our young kids are running as well as we’d like. The first group (not so much). Hopefully that will get better.’’

I've always said that Larry gives his point guard the freedom to do what he wants on most plays. What I mean is the point guard in LB's system must read and react very quick to the defense and take advantage of openings on certain trips up the court. We must get more easy baskets in transition if we're going to win because we're not going to see bad defensive teams like the Raptors and Wizards every night.

Run!!! Stop being so timid!!!

Larry said the same thing last year.

I love how he completely ignores the problem at hand though (half court offense). Also, its kinda hard to run when the defense is playing at a below-average level.

I mean, is he really trying to bandaid the issue of us turning the ball over at an insane rate by suggesting that we simply manufacture more possessions? Hall of Fame coaching gentlemen...

The bench runs, but the starters don't run for ish. go back and watch the games, you'll see DJ turn on the jets and go but 95% of the time its a 1 on 2 or 3 because its not like Jackson, Boris, or Naz are gonna run. Gerald runs sometimes if he's on the 3pt line. I dunno if I've ever seen Boris run on a legitimate fast break, ie not one from some steal at the top of the 3pt line for easy bucket.

He said the exact same thing last year for starters.

Also, blindly agreeing with people against all common sense isn't a recipe for success - this is the same guy that said that we need to run our offense through Boris Diaw. The same guy that won't bench Stephen Jackson aka Turnover Jesus. This is the same guy who thought that Acie Law's debut for the Bobcats should come with less than 30 seconds left on the clock in the 4th quarter. It doesn't take a basketball genius to see that he makes mistakes just like everyone else.

I'm all for letting the man's resume do the talking, but at the same time anyone should be able to see that 1 + 1 shouldn't equal 5. Larry Brown has probably forgotten more about basketball than many people will ever learn, but at the same time it seems that he's forgotten that turnovers will kill a team quicker than anything short of a plane crash.

So uh... yeah. Lets cover up this bottom barrell halfcourt offense by using the defense that we don't have to manufacture more possessions and opportunities to run with the players who aren't capable of doing it. Hall of Fame Coaching For Dummies by Larry Brown

Throw some donuts on the court and you'll have Boris Diaw running like Usain Bolt.

He can say it all he wants to but our team isn't built to run. Jax and Gerald both average 40 minutes in our current offense; how tired do you think they'll become if they have to run more and still play the 40 minutes that LB wants them to play?

ah yes, the annual coach wants the team to run thread. established 2005 under the great Bernie Bickerstaff.

Coaches who have said we should run but never have them run a fast paced running offense:

adding onto that, we've always been a team with players who are better at running than half court offense too. It's a shame they prefer to run the slow it down half court sets.

So when Larry busts out his 30+ page play book that's him actually saying "I want you guys to turn on the jets and run"?

Half court offense doesn't come and go the way uptempo run and gun style can. But it's not like they'd forget how to run half court offense if they started running...

When Larry says we need to run more, he's not saying be like the Golden State Warriors. He's saying we're not taking advantage of certain situations when the opportunity to run presents itself.

last few games dj really seems to be pushing the ball up the floor whenever possible, but there just usually isnt many others coming with him. boris, nazr and jax are not exactly the types to sprint on the break. a lot of times it ends with dj in a 1 on 3 situation.

Tyrus would be sprinting up the floor, I bet.

Like Rich mentioned, the coach of the Bobcats, whoever it is, says this every year and we always have one of the slowest paces in the league. Interesting new way to take a shot at DJ though, Battman.

Hilaaaaaarious that we can never escape this. We're the slowest team in the league, and will be as long as LB is the coach.

I thought it had something to do with having 3 starters over 30. Well, Maybe Diaw is under 30, I'm not sure, but he's bulked up beyond his natural size and his speed has suffered for it.

Larry is like one of those people who keep saying “I need to save more money…” and then promptly go out and buy a bunch of useless junk.

In his case he keeps saying “We need to run…” and then promptly tries to call 99% of the plays from the bench.

Of course the team doesn’t run as much as he wants.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody
