Dom McGuire - pet project or great role player?

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/1 ... -fill.htmlStill, McGuire brings many similar skills to the court. Brown said McGuire can be the Bobcats' best on-ball defender, guarding three or four positions, and he's the team's best rebounder behind Wallace.
http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_n ... ughts.html-- The hating on Dominic McGuire would be funny if it wasn’t so misguided and mean. Of course he isn’t a shooter, and probably takes too many shots. But does anyone understand how hard it is to grab 17 rebounds in an NBA game?
I keep reading comments that he’s stealing minutes from Tyrus Thomas and that Thomas is so dramatically better a shooter. McGuire played 40 minutes Friday because Gerald Wallace is out, Jackson missed the second quarter and Gerald Henderson was limited by more pain in his left knee.
As to Thomas’ shooting, did anyone notice Thomas was 2-of-9 Friday? I love Thomas’ potential, but his flaws (rash decision-making/too excitable/quick to foul) get dismissed as if they don’t exist.
I’m not a McGuire apologist. I’m saying judge everyone by comparable standards. When Thomas or Derrick Brown or Gerald Henderson screw up, it's youth in a learning experience. When McGuire does something poorly, it's a career-defining indictment. You'd think McGuire is 35, jumping on one leg, and desperate to get one more paycheck. Sheesh.
per 36, wallace is the teams 6th best rebounder this year. he is hardly rebounding like he was last year.
10.6 nazr
10.6 mcguire
10.0 tyrus
9.8 kbrown
8.8 diop
7.5 wallace
i also think its ridiculous to bring up tyrus shooting 2-for-9 and compare that to mcguire shooting poorly when on the season mcguire is at 31% and tyrus us at 51%.
that being said, its nice to have utility player like mcguire on the bench, someone who can defend and rebound when needed. i think we all agree he is a good addition to the team when he is used correctly. what we all have a problem with his him getting 40+ mins, taking 13 shoots, having plays run for him on offense, him getting stuck with the ball at the end of shot clocks (not really his fault), and him being able to play through his mistakes while ups and tyrus and henderson dont seem to get that same benefit.

he sucks...we could find 10 dudes in the Dleague right now that can do the same thing and would be better at it....not only that he has no ceiling so he is taking mins away from guys who may actually be decent one day....on any other team he would play more than 10 mins a night

He sucks, hes a garbage bench warmer that should be in the d-league. Hes not good at defense, thats a misconception, just because he stays infront of a man doesn't make him a good defender, if he let bust ass Marvin Williams light him up, just by shooting Open Jumpers, then you're not a good defender point blank.

I gave McGuire a silver hammer for performing his role well on Saturday. Some people think it's all about scoring.

SUUUUUUUUUUCKS, nice addition my a*s. I'll tell you a way to use him "correctly", play UPS and send him to the d league. How he gets 40 mins while TT is relegated to 15 is beyond a JOKE.

Agreed - so long as it's on the bench they see the majority of their time and not on the court. For Brick, it's the other way around - and that's the problem.
Of course that's not his problem. It's the silly old man pretending that it's still 1974 that is the problem. He's putting Brick in these positions to fail.

its not that i overvalue scoring its just that mcguire is SO bad at scoring that he is throwing an already poor scoring team way out of wack.....like we can stand for a team to double wallace or jack so he can shoot wide open jumpers all night

anytime you are playing 4 on 5 on offense due to one player being a nightmare on offense, some of the other 4 players better be great on offense to make up for it. sadly, we exactly 0 great offensive players. playing mcguire 40 minutes, isnt too far away from playing diop 40 minutes. even if diop was as good a rebounder as mcguire (its sad that he's not - and the are both decent defenders) you still could never get away with playing him 40 minutes due to the giant black hole he creates on offense.

Exactly. That's why guys like ron artest get playing time despite not scoring much with his minutes this season (though his minutes are down too). They don't really need him on offense. We couldn't score if it was 7 on five when we were on offense

But McGuire only played 40 minutes on Saturday because of matchups and Crash being out. Not only that we were in this game down 3 with 1:38 left so you can make the case it was our defense AND energy on that end which kept us in the game. S-Jax shot 3-14 and DJ was 1-7 from 3. If those two make just one or two more shots we could have won or gone into OT. McGuire at least scored 4 points in the final minute while everyone else did nothing except for a meaningless basket by DJ with 10 seconds left when the game was already decided.
And this was against a good team on their home court, lets not forget that. We could have easily been blown out, but we fought back because we played good defense in this game.

true, you can get away with mcguire playing starter minutes if you put him next to kobe, gasol and odom. and compared to mcguire, artest is durant on offense.
you could get away with bowen cause you had duncan, manu and parker... and bowen at least had a 3pt shoot.
you could get away with rodman cause you had mj, pippen and kukoc.
you could get away with michael cooper cause you had magic, worthy and kareem.
you could get away with rondo as a rookie because you had pierce, garnett and ray allen.
you put rookie rondo, michael cooper, rodman, artest and bowen on the floor together and you'd have a giant **** sandwich on offense. all the defense and rebounding in the world cant make up for horrible offense most nights.
we are a horrible offensive team. we dont have the luxury of playing defensive role players 40 minutes.

I'm not saying it's McGuire's fault, but you put more pressure on the guards when you're missing an offensive spot in your lineup and already don't rely on the bigs for scoring.

McGuire got TWO essentially meaningless baskets driving to the bucket for 2 when no one is going to foul or go for the block. This entire post was utterly pointless. McGuire sucks and everybody knows it. His form on his jumper isn't bad but it just doesn't go in. We're just putting the writing on the wall for UPS to leave this off-season. Way to build a winnner!

another start for mcguire and another horror show on offense for the starting unit. you cant take a bad offensive unit and add an even worse offensive player and expect good results.
mcguire played 21 minutes tonight and was -33. how is that even possible?

Can anyone tell me how a player can score 0 points in 21 Minutes and still be in the starting line up?

I'd rather see collins play 35 minutes than McGuire. At least collins would be fun to look at.

Heck I would rather see Ammo play 35 minutes than McGuire, at least he looked like a porn star.
If we are going to suck I would like to see a starting line up of:
Lexy, Nathan Jawai, Hermann, Ammo and Dj (I couldn't think of anyone for Pg)
At least it would give me a giggle.

Here's a question for you!
Who would you rather see play 35 mins McGuire or Burleson?

(Remember the guy who missed 30 shots in a row, not just 3s, but jumpers and layups too)
