Mavericks fan here. Last night we played the bucks and caron butler went down with an injury, though there are no reports on how serious it is... I suspect it's serious enough to sideline him for at least month. Obviously, this significantly effects us in the standings come playoff time, so in all likely hood cubans going to be looking for a trade to make.

Gerald Wallace and Steven Jackson are both players that the mavs covet. Either one would be more than a suitable replacement for butler.

Butler is a $13 million expiring contract, (and a 15 ppg player and a solid defender) any trade the mavericks make will revolve around his contract. So my trade idea is along the lines of something like this...

Butler
Roddy Beaubois (only for Gerald though)
A first round pick
Deshawn Stevenson (2nd best 3 point shooter in league and our best defender)
Ian mahimi (a young athletic center, first round pick, showing promise and beginning to beat out haywood for minutes).... If the numbers work and your are interested

Only if Butler is healthy, which it appears it is a serious injury. This team is in full playoff mode, MJ is not going to make a trade anymore that just dumps salary. In that scenario, we would be trading one of our best players for a 1st round pick, expiring, and a bunch of pieces that would not ammount anywhere close to the input we get from jackson or Wallace. It's not a bad package if we were trying to rebuild, however it's clear were not trying to do that anymore. Plus that first round pick figures to be very late, which would end up doing us very little good considering our drafting woes and the rarety that really good talent comes out from the late first round. I would not do this trade. Only way Wallace or Jackson are traded is for a piece that improves this team. MJ has made that clear now that we have Silas and some life in us.

That's a definite yes. Dallas wouldn't do it though; they're not giving up Roddy, expirings, and picks for Gerald Wallace or Stephen Jackson.

That's not a salary dump; that's the trade of all trades to rebuild. Throw in Jackson and Wallace to make it better.

I'm thinking Dallas will get desperate enough to throw in roddy and pretty much whatever else you want you want so long as we're capable. We have the 2nd best record against one of the toughest schedules in the league all without roddy. If we're offered an upgraded butler replacement at this point, Dallas would probably pull the trigger.

I would do that contract for butler....butler does not even have to resign here we will take the cap space...

Which player/package would you do? Gerald or Stephen?

I doubt we trade Roddy for those two. If the Mavs make a "desperation" move, it will be one that involes finacial issues like Jackson's 3 year deal for expirings (I don't see Wallace being moved in a dump). I don't see them desperate enough to trade Roddy. We have Marion at the 3 with Ajinca and Mahinmi at the 4....Cardinal & Novak at the backup 3. If they want a backup SF, I could see them using their TPE on Moon.

I could also see Jones in a trade. Many Mav fans like him because of his slashing ability, creating for others and defense (ask John Wall), but I don't like him for the same reasons I don't like Jackson...averages over 3 turnovers per 36 and shoots in the 42-43% range.

I think we'll pretty much have to give up roddy, maybe not for sjax, but roddy finally gives us a piece to acquire an established star to pair with dirk, something the mavs have wanted for the better part of the decade. Roddys an exciting young player I understand, but he's pretty much a mystery other than his athletic ability. Would you really pass on a legit chance to pair dirk with a real sidekick and possibly win a ring just to retain a player that we're excited about because WE drafted him and he MIGHT become a star somewhere down the road?

Who is this "real sidekick" you are talking about? I see a trade for Jackson who is more negative on the court than postive and I see Wallace who is younger than Marion but not different than Marion. Neither are a "sidekick" better than Roddy (or Terry for that matter) for what we need. They can both have an impact, but neither are a 2nd scoring option because one is limited and the other is a complete chucker who is very turnover pronned.

I may trade Terry for Jackson, but there is nothing there to merit Roddy; we would be better off standing pat than tradding Roddy for them.

Everyone always undervalues Jackson. If he wasn't the 1st option here he wouldn't be shooting so much, or handling the ball as often leading to turnovers.

And if you want to use green fonts, you might want to use them when you suggest Rodrigue Beaubois would net you a star in any trade or suggesting that having Ajinca at the 4 means you have depth there.
