i think it's the right move. not too much of a commitment, but then again i think we can safely say you know what you're getting with paul silas. truth is he's earned some trust from the front office and i imagine MJ appreciates seeing winning basketball.

How can you not like Paul Silas? The guy is a teddy bear. Not to mention him turning the team around. Good move.

May not be MJ that requested the 1 year, may be Silas. He has said mutliple times he doesn't forsee coaching for an extended amount of time, maybe a couple years. Plus this is something that works for both. Nothing says you can't extend him again when the time comes. Too many teams make bad decisions hiring coaches to BIG contracts that almost never get fullfilled. Then your just paying a coach for nothing, like LB. So if you can avoid that mistake, why not avoid it? Especially when you know the ONLY place Silas is looking at coaching is Charlotte. Smart move.

The man is nearing 70 years old. This is a high stress job, you know?

He has earned it. Good job.

MJ isn't going to repeat the Larry Brown situation (doesn't he owe him $5m next year?) so this deal makes sense. Like Ohara said, Silas has earned the job. It would send the wrong message to the team to replace him after this success. IMO, just the success he's had with Henderson is enough to bring him back in some capacity.

Now the bigger question is, after next season if Silas does decide to retire (which would be logical I think), would it be a logical progression for his son to take over the riegns? Would MJ go for that?

Good question. I think you could certainly go with his son or Oakley when Silas Sr. decides to retire again. Both options should be cheap which will be a plus for MJ. Whoever we grab, I don't see MJ reaching out for the big name.

Yeah I think we're entering a new era of coaching. If we want to be a part of that we need young coaching that will grow with the organization.

The only con is with lockout we may not need a coach next year, otherwise a good move.

We'd still want to get the players in the gym who don't wanna leave.

great news.
i like the 1 year deal also. gives team flexibility next summer.
figure one of three things
1) mj knows the window for this current squad is 1 more year, after that he has no choice but to rebuild - diaw, wallace, nazr, kwame, dj etc... all have contracts coming up in next 16 months. not fair to ask a 70 year old to go through rebuilding. will go with young coach once rebuilding starts.
2) they are giving stephen silas one more year of learning and then hopefully promoting him to head with oakley as lead assistant.
3) silas doesnt want to commit to anything longer due to age. team will add another year to contract next year of silas is willing and team is in good shape.

I think rebuilding would me smooth. Dropped Nazr, Kwame on a decent backup big contract, DJ on a contract not much more expensive than Tyrus, Jack would be 34 and looking at the minimum for backup 2/3, Crash would be 30-31 and looking at MLE kinda money, Diaw as well. Henderson would be (I think) on the last eyar of his rookie contract. It just seems like our situation improves monetarily, and that rebuilding would be more addition than subtraction. That's why I'd rather wait to rebuild until then. Tyrus is under contract, DJ would likely get a good offer from us, and Hendo would still be on Rookie scale. It sounds good.
