Bought Out Player Targets

The NBA's buyout market will soon have a surprise addition: New York Knicks' Corey Brewer. The Knicks and Brewer are closing in on a buyout agreement that will make the former Minnesota swingman a free agent, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com. ESPN.com

Doesn't really make sense to me the Knicks would do this. He was a solid guy this year and they needed a bench...makes you wonder. I'm sure all the championship caliber teams will jump on him, but man wouldn't he fit perfectly in here with us? He can play the wing positions to fill a huge need while also being young and with potential. He is also a good defender. What you guys think about A) our chances of signing him, and B) the chances MJ goes after him? Finally, if we were able to get him, do you think he would be enough to jump us into the playoffs?

Because Brewer will be officially released before March 1, he's eligible to play in the playoffs with another team. Sources say Boston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Dallas are among the teams with the most interest in Brewer, who joined the Knicks only last week as part of the Carmelo Anthony deal. ESPN.com

That's the preliminary list. If we don't at least TRY to get him, I am going to be mad...

He's an interesting option because he could compete for the SG job. That might make us a favorable option to him.

I don't know if MJ extends an offer but I would.

Boston could easily play him at the 2,3 behind Green and Ray.

Boston wings:

Pierce, Green, Ray, Wafer. Brewer would be an upgrade on both ends over Wafer.

Dallas wings:

Roddy, Stevenson, Peja, Butler(could be back for playoffs), Marion, Jet, Dominique Jones.

Brewer fits in just snug as a Celtic.

Not even impressed with him as a back-up? I would think most would have to agree he is better than D.Brown and Carroll.

Seriously, Brewer blows. He consistently posts negative win shares, which really takes some doing. He's a good defender, yes, but I really don't think he's any better than UPS. Regardless I don't see why he'd sign here to be a backup, and he probably wants a real, multi-year deal with his new team.

Dude, Roddy starts and plays the 2 for Dallas: http://espn.go.com/nba/team/depth/_/name/dal/dallas-mavericks.

He's a SG in a PG's body. Ok take out Jones and Butler, they still have their wing depth covered.

Delonte plays the backup point for Rondo.

I would LOVE him as well. Is he healthy? He would be a great add to this team. Talk about a great bench option if he is healthy...

BTW, Captain, I would like to see UPS average 9ppg at any point in his career. No question in my mind that Brewer is the better player.

Healthy Buike could be very interesting. Can he play SF effectively?

Kelenna Azubuike is always accomodating when it comes to granting interviews, but at this point he's getting tired of the same question.

"Very tired," he corrected.

After watching him in the practice scrimmage today, however, I don't think you need to ask him how he and his surgically-repaired knee feels. It's visually evident that it's improved dramatically since the start of the season. He's still not impressively explosive or noticably athletic, but he doesn't stand out in a bad way, either.

"I feel closer than I've ever been," Azubuike said as he walked off the court. What's more important is Mike D'Antoni, this time, agrees.

"He's getting closer, that's for sure," D'Antoni said. "I didn't think he'd even get this close. We'll keep evaluating him and we'll see after the all-star break how he's doing and see if there's some opportunities to get him on the floor."

Azubuike's strengths, pre-injury, were explosive athleticism, defense and a three-point touch. The athleticism isn't quite there, though he's not running with a gimp in his gait like we saw in November. He moves well within a game and doesn't get easily beat. He can still knock down the three-ball.

It's been well over a year since he's played in an NBA game, so no one expects Azubuike to step in and make a major difference. But for someone who has spent a year rehabilitating a very troublesome injury -- ruptured patella tendon -- he is finally, at least, making notable progress. He feels if he got into a game, he can do "enough to keep up."

"I've been keeping up pretty good in practice and playing as hard as I can and everything," he said. "I'm pretty confident in the knee. I'm axious to get out there."

That', of course, is the hard part when it comes to D'Antoni's rotation. Azubuike would have to do show more than Bill Walker to get those minutes. But it would be better for Azubuike to get some garbage time minutes first, rather than just dive right into a live game, especially in a playoff push. But if he can continue to improve, Azubuike could be an extremely valuable player come April.

"Right now to break into any rhythm I think is kind of hard," D'Antoni said, "but it would be great to get him out there every once in a while."

He may not have a choice. If the Knicks do pull off the Carmelo Anthony trade and give up a few players in the rotation, perhaps even rookie Landry Fields, Azubuike, a shooting guard, may suddenly become an important piece of the rotation. Another possibility is that Azubuike, who has an expiring contract with 80 percent of his salary covered by insurance as a result of missing over 41 games with the injury, is included in a trade.

"You never know, it's tough to think about that and try to figure out what's going to happen," he said. "You never know. I'm just going to continue doing what I'm doing and get myself as ready as I can."

He is a good player, reminds me of a young Raja Bell.

I remember Brewer was a pretty good prospect coming out of the draft. I know he's had some injuries, but he's turned out to be a bit of a bust it seems. If I were him, I would find a team with the most playing time to be offered so I could get myself a decent contract. Riding the pine on Boston or Miami's bench will not help him do that, he's too young to make that move and I'm sure his agent is advising the same thing.

That being said, we would be an ideal spot for him because he'd get opportunity. But it won't help us out much so meh.

He played with Rondo in Kentucky. Fantastic shooter. They dropped him so they could get Jared Jeffies and Azubuike is expiring anyway.

Nah, the FO felt that Buike wouldn't be ready to play by the time playoffs roll around. He'd be good in limited minutes and he'll be back to 100%, ready for next season. All i know is if i'm MJ i'm giving up my golfing schedule and going after him HARD.
