CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—With the NBA looking at a potential lockout that would wipe out July’s summer leagues, the Charlotte Bobcats thought they found a way to still get a look at young players and free agents.
The league had other ideas.
Coach Paul Silas said Tuesday night the NBA turned down Charlotte’s plans to host a multi-team, free-agent camp after this month’s draft and before the collective bargaining agreement expires July 1.
The Miami Heat, Memphis Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks were scheduled to bring free agents and possibly draft picks to Time Warner Cable Arena. The teams had even reserved hotel rooms for the series of workouts and scrimmages on two courts at the facility before plans changed.
“The league wouldn’t let us do it,” Silas said.
HOWEVER
But the Bobcats still plan to get in as much work as possible before the league could shut down amid a labor dispute. And so far the Bobcats are happy with the results—especially with top scorer Stephen Jackson(notes).
Now healthy following a lingering left hamstring injury that ended his season early, Jackson has lost 20 pounds. Down to 225 pounds, he impressed in a workout Tuesday supervised by Charlotte assistant coach Stephen Silas.
“When I saw Jack today, initially I didn’t know it was him,” general manager Rod Higgins said. “He had on this nice white outfit so you could definitely see his waistline. I’m sure that was intentionally done.”
Jackson leads a parade of players scheduled to work out at the team facility before they’re potentially barred July 1. Tyrus Thomas(notes), D.J. Augustin(notes), Matt Carroll(notes) and Garrett Temple(notes) were on hand Tuesday. Even guard Gerald Henderson(notes), still on crutches following hip surgery, watched the workout
“It just shows you the leaders that we have on this team, to get guys to collectively say this is something we want to do,” Higgins said.
Kwame Brown(notes), Shaun Livingston(notes), D.J. White(notes) and Dante Cunningham(notes), who faces a marijuana possession charge after a May traffic stop in suburban Philadelphia, are expected in before the end of the month.

Silas was looking forward to what he called an intense two-week session he has planned with Brown. Silas remains hopeful the impending free-agent center stays in Charlotte.
“Kwame is going to be unbelievable this year because we’re going to have a chance to work on some of his deficiencies,” Silas said. “When he comes back people are going to marvel at him at the way he’s going to be playing.”

It's all Coach Silas leading the charge too - getting the players in early, trying to get the mini SL going etc.
Got to love that.

Props to Temple for showing up early. He's not guaranteed to be back next season but with that attitude, he surely wants to return.
Jax dropping pounds is great for two reasons; he's healthy (can't be hurt and lose 20 healthy pounds) and he's motivated to improve (he's not sulking like he did in Golden State).
Kwame would be an All-Star if Miracle Grow made a product for hands.

I have to say, excluding his occasional brain fades in games, I love Jax with this team.
He really seems to have a winning attitude and is not afraid to work hard. I didn't want him here when he was at GSW, but I've loved what he has brought. Overall he is a pretty good leader.

Silas' quote makes it sound like the team is planning on kwame being here, resigning Kwame no matter the competition.
Oak gonna be out? Maybe opp to talk Najera into retiring to the bench as nxt yr's rebouding/defense,hustle coach and hispanic community outreach liaison.

meh, I remember reading the same news last year. Therefore, it's tough for me to get excited about this team

Really? You don't remember the vibe from this time last year? It was nothing like this.

It is good that he came in, but I doubt he will be on the roster next season. I fully expect the team to select a PG with our 39th pick (a Nolan Smith, Reggie Jackson, Darius Morris, Cory Joesph type).
There seems to be a lot of 2nd/3rd strong PG's with upside in the 2nd round this draft.

more random team unity news... was on way home about 30 minutes ago and caught a live interview with silas on national radio as part of nba finals pregame show. all of the bobcats were over at silas' house on the lake getting ready to watch the finals together. jax was the only player who was not at silas' house yet but he was supposed to be there any second. silas kept joking about how he would have to get on jax for being last one to arrive.
sadly most of the questions were about finals matchups, but silas did talk about how all the players are buying into what he is selling and they are really coming together as a team and how he expects it to show next season.
pretty cool.

Kwame is an unrestricted FA, right?
