Bobcats hired Rich Cho as GM

Post#1 » by -Ian- » Tue Jun 14, 2011 4:55 am

As per the Bobcats Facebook page, the team promoted Rod Higgins as the President of Basketball Operations and hired Rich Cho as General Manager.

I'm wondering why did they opt for Cho when Pritchard is available. Meh!

You mean Rich Cho? He's the previous GM of the Blazers and the successor of Pritchard. He was also the assistant GM of OKC before.

I have mixed feelings about this move.

The FB fans are happy because this is the guy that "stole" Wallace. I don't know if I want a guy that's willing to make that kind of move. Draft wise, Portland ended up with Luke Babbitt, Elliot Williams, and Armon Johnson last year. That's nothing to brag about either. Then again, he's an upgrade over Higgins.

I'm just going to ignore his year in Portland and focus on the success he had during his long tenure in Seattle/OKC.

This is a great hire. I am really surprised that MJ had the balls to "promote" Higgins as well.

Apparently Higgins was the one who suggested this. Kudos to Higgins for conceding to a better negotiator.

Huge move if MJ stays out of the way and let's Cho do his job. Ignore Cho's year in Portland and remember he played a hand in what has been built in Oklahoma City. OKC is the perfect model for what we need to do in remodeling the franchise but we still have to be patient!

the guy has been a part of innovative, young front offices in the past. hopefully he can bring some new thinking and maybe, just maybe, a solid approach to college and international scouting and/or good contacts with scouts. i have to think that he's going to bring a lot more to the table than higgins, who seems more of an administrative type of guy.

edit: seems i was barking a bit up the wrong tree hoping that cho would bring an approach to scouting with him. he's a stats and numbers kind of guy. here is a very interesting article about him from when he was hired in portland - http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazer ... cho_h.html

anyways, an analytical mindset can be very useful for the bobcats in evaluating players, both in their skills and use to the team, and their value in a trade or free agent market. his quotes in that article reeeeeeally match up with jordan's talk over the last couple of months of "putting together assets to build a championship calibre team." so i would imagine that's what he's going to be focused on, at least in the short term. still a positive hire. the guy is young, has energy and ambition, and will bring a fresh perspective to the front office. i'm excited to see what he can bring to the table.

cho was hired after the draft by the blazers, kevin pritchard was their gm at the time.

Presti also said it was not uncommon for Cho to engineer the framework of a trade on the phone, then run it by the management team for approval.

The latest example came on draft night last month, Presti said. Cho traded Oklahoma City's No. 32 pick to Miami for the Heat's No. 18 pick and guard Daequan Cook. In turn, Cho turned the 18th pick into a future first-round pick with the Los Angeles Clippers.

So what started out to be the No. 32 pick turned out to be Cook and a future first-round pick.

That type of move, Cho says, is typical of his way of thinking.

"When you make trades you have to look at it in a layering aspect: So let's make this trade, and maybe what we get out of this trade can help us make a subsequent trade," Cho explained. "Sometimes you have to make one deal to make another."

that's some downright dirty talk right there. should be charging $1.99 per minute.

I'm feeling really awesome about this the more I read about him! Cho is gonna be awesome! Maybe he could try a trade like that of 32 for Cook and 18. Then trading 18 for future 1st rd pick from the Clippers! Man if he does that for us... OMG! 8-)

I like this signing. However, why can't we just fire Higgins already?

Maybe Higgins is still under contract and MJ didn't want to pay him for nothing, or maybe he is excellent at other parts of management that we aren't aware of.

Anyhow I gotta say I am excited by this hiring. We've been calling for some fresh blood in the front office and I think he's going to do well.

He's got a great challenge ahead of him as we are entering an extremely important stage for the franchise. How he manages the rebuild with our draft picks and expiring contracts will be crucial in where the Bobcats go from here.

Also you can see by his pic that this man just loves the LULZ.

So a perfect fit really.

Mixed feelings on this one. His work during his limited time in Portland was underwhelming.

OKC is the ultimate blueprint. Its just a matter of how much of a hand Cho had in assisting Presti.

Willing to give him a chance though. Bold move by MJ.

Rich Cho is the man, Kevin Pritchard is overrated...ask the blazer fan's....

Kevin Pritchard was fired because he wouldn't communicate with the rest of the FO & took credit for other member's of the FO (successful)work whilst palming off his failures...

Rich Cho got fired because him & Paul Allen didn't get along.....

I think I'd go with Cho & Kudos to Rod Higgins for apparently abdicating..

He did real well in Portland & also was the ASSISTANT GM to Presti which means he assisted quite a bit  Some of the trades Presti gets credit for were actually him, He also ran their legal team & constructed their D-League team Tulsa(Which made it to the D-League finals)

The guy is gold & I'm really excited..I believe he's keen to be a part of a team that needs rebuilding as opposed to one that needs tweaking in Portland.

Guys, just my opinion, you now have a better GM than the Blazers regardless of who we hire. Congrats and this will come to bit Paul Allen back...
