Charlotte Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins announced today that the team has extended a qualifying offer to forward Dante Cunningham, making him a restricted free agent. The qualifying offer allows the Bobcats to match any offer he receives from another team.
The Bobcats acquired Cunningham on Feb. 24, 2011, along with Joel Przybilla, Sean Marks and two first-round draft picks from Portland in exchange for Gerald Wallace. In 22 games played for the Bobcats, Cunningham averaged 9.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 24.0 minutes. He scored in double figures in 11 of the 22 games, tallying a career-high 21 points on two occasions.
Initially selected by Portland with the 33rd overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Cunningham has played in 141 career NBA games with averages of 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds in 16.6 minutes.

Expected move with the outcome of the draft.

Develop handles and 3 point shot, he'd be dangerous.

Agreed.
Hopefully with our shortage at the SF position he gets lots of burn leading up to Feb 2012 and really drives his trade value up.

I actually think he could fit in very nicely next year as an important bench player. The guy was pretty damn successful off the bench for us last year, would love to have him back. At 1 million bucks for 1 year, why the heck not? Hope he is back to bring his play off the bench for us next season. He could be a future bench asset for this team...

I personally don't see the need for both Dante and DJW on the roster at the same time - but maybe that is just me?

I agree thay may see him more of a PF too, but right now we don't have any depth at SF and he play that spot without problems and he already knows the environmant, teammates plays... Unlikely that we would find someone better for the same money (soon enough). It is just QO, nothing more than one year contract who anyone can outbid and then we wouldh ave to decide, so it's logical move with not much to lose. The only downside is that if lockout would last whole season, then it is practically meaningless contract. Maybe we will make him an offer for tow years + team option or something.
Even with him back we still have enough spots to sign any work out warrior we would like. With Kwame back it would still be 2 free spots (one should be a guard in my opinion).

I wasn't thinking of position doc as much as I was skill set. On offense Dante and DJW are very, very, VERY similar players regardless of the position they play - which is also some what similar to Hendo and some what similar to T2.
I would rather some diversity across the roster.

There's nothing wrong with having good assets. OKC had that issue; that's why they were willing to do the Nazr trade. You hope that a team is interested in Cunningham mid-season and you can ship him off individually or package him in a deal for an upgrade/cap relief/picks/etc.

That's what I said about 5 posts above!!

Yup, I was going to post that even if they have identical skillset and would be on roster at the start fo the season (whatever it is) that doesn't mean one or both wouldn't be throw in some trade as young promising player asset chip. I don't think Cho will do trades just to do trades but he will surely explore how to get more picks in next years and such a type of player as Cunnigham may be a casualty of that (mybe on next draft day? who knows).

Indeed. Sometimes I fail to notice those things.
Anyways, fwiw, Dante shot 50% with 9ppg and 4rpg in 24mpg worth of action. You would expect Mags to play 30-35mpg so that's leaving Dante with a good 15+ except for when we play Henderson/Carroll at SF (which I expect a lot of, especially DJ - Kemba - Hendo). It's not the best thing ever but for the QO, it's better than Graham or McGuire.

this makes me happy. i really like dante's game. he can play 2 positions, is a capable defender and rebounder and makes open jump shots. exactly what you want in bench player.

You know, Stephen Graham wasn't that bad. I'd rather have Joey Graham, obviously, but Stephen Graham I think was better than McGuire.

Glad we did it, are we trading DJ white? Having a banger never hurts but our front court is kind of crowded if Kwame is retained.
Kwaman
TT
BB
DJ White
Cunningham(who will also backup sf)

Another Good Move.. This guys shown us hes got game and with a full training camp behind him should be a great backup for Magette. If he gives us a solid 14/7 20mpg next season, give him a 2-3 year contract extension.
Now we need to sign Kuwamee before July 1st and then sit and wait for decision on Labor Contract which hopefully will be a done deal by 10-1-2011.

WTF type of intro is that by Bonnell? Anyway, I like Cunningham and thought it would've been ridiculous to not give him whatever super cheap QO he's locked into because of an unrelated to basketball legal issue.

I don't think he has a future with this team aside from being third string 3/4, at best. I really hope he proves me wrong though. This kind of off the court issue might indicate that he doesn't care that much about getting better.

Dude hustles, plays defense and isn't going to make us win games we shouldn't. Future looks bright with the cats.
