Marreese Speights?

Post#1 » by TheKingofSting » Mon Jul 4, 2011 1:14 am

Obviously we can't make any moves yet but when the collective bargaining agreement is eventually reached how about this fella depending on the asking price? Philly seems to really want to move him and maybe a change of scenery would do him so good?

I just mentioned this on the trade ideas thread, If we could get him cheaply then I would say yes.

What do you think they would want for him??

One thing is for sure if we traded for him, between BB,TT,Kwame & Speights we would lead the league in fouls.

Don't see how we're a better situation for him. He wants/needs minutes and we have a logjam at PF/C already.

If Cho was to trade Diaw, DJW that might help, can start him at 4 and have TT backing up.

No use for him on this team. We horde PF's like we're run by David Kahn.

He's listed as a Center.

It doesn't sound like it'd take very much, they seem almost desperate to get rid of him, I wouldn't trade draft picks anyway. Like stated above he's a C and I don't see any reason why not to at least pursue this avenue especially if we don't re-sign Kwame.

He's only 23 and is skilled offensively. He could be a good fit next to BB.

Worth looking at, but would have to start getting rid of some of our bigs.

He is a PF more than a center to be honest. Though he may have bulked up.

He's more a face up, jump shooting PF though - which is what Tyrus is. So I would rather pass on Speights and just stick with Tyrus.

I have to admit I haven't seen enough of him to truly argue. I saw that Draftexpress rated his back to the basket scoring and hook shot and thought he must have some offensive post game.

The Speights situation should serve as a cautionary tale for all teams with respect to selling high when you have the chance. 18 months or so ago, philly considered him to be nearly untouchable. Speights was playing so well, putting up 20pt+ games with ease, that the freshly signed Brand could not even get on the floor.

I think he suffered some nagging injuries and never regained form or conditioning.

Now philly wont be able to get nearly the return they could have in early '10.

If we go into the season with Tyrus and Biyombo as our 4-5 combo, we will be one of, if not the worst post scoring team in the league.

My main objective would be to move Tyrus, groom Biyombo at the 4, not 5 and pair him next to a true center who is an offensive post-up threat a-la Gasol (first preference but it would take a miracle and another salary dump) or Hawes (more realistic).

Speights has always tempted me. He does have some game, and he's still young. I think he's more of a 5 than a 4 (in today's NBA), and could be a nice option here to put in the mix. Your discussion brings up the question of Tyrus fit with this team, as it is being constructed. Short of suddenly aquiring an expanded offensive game, I'm not sure TT is the right guy next to BiBo. While I do think Biyombo's natural position will be center, he will play it as an energy guy versus a classic post-up player. Sounds like Tyrus game at the 4, doesn't it? Two energy guys could create lots of havoc, but where's the offense coming from? I agree that BiBo might work at the 4 if paired with a Marc Gasol, but I'd almost prefer BiBo as an undersized 5 matched with a quality big 4 who can post AND have range on his jumper. Speights might have a better chance of being that guy versus Tyrus.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I don't see the offense of Tyrus and Speights as being that different. The only difference between the two is how much more athletic Tyrus is than Speights.

That said, if we could trade Tyrus to Philly for Speights in order to get out of the Tyrus contract then I would probably be down.

I've always liked Speights, but I feel like DJW is a similar player. Probably has a higher ceiling, but idk, White feels a lot safer, which we like (and is probably better for the rebuild).

We could have both, Speights is a 6'10 C, DJW is a PF.

I'd consider Speights if we dont get Kwame back.

I feel like they're really repetitive, regardless of Speights being listed at 6'10 and you considering him a center.
