interesting stuff. lots of piss and vinegar.

silas get a B-minus which is one of the higher grades.

Paul Silas (Charlotte): Dignity, honesty, experience and a calm demeanor are his main qualifications. Gets the most out of veteran players, but needs help in Xs and Os from his assistants. Grade: B minus.

i love this one
Flip Saunders (Washington): His multi-faceted offensive strategies are too complicated for today’s dumbed-down players. Lacks the charisma to be head coach. Would be best utilized as an assistant in charge of Xs. Grade: C minus.

Mike Brown (LA Lakers): Was AWOL in too many timeout huddles in Cleveland, and also let LeBron walk all over him. No way he can handle Kobe. Grade: C minus.

Good find, will check out the article later. Pretty scathing blurb about Flip...

I think that's kind of insulting to Silas

Go up to Silas and tell him that you don't think he understands strategy and how to run a play. Let me know what his response is.

I think Silas is a good coach. Is he great? No, but to say he doesn't understand or needs help with x's and o's is extremely insulting to someone who's been involved with the NBA as either a player or coach for like 40 years. I took what Rosen said and interpreted as he thinks he's a swell guy and a players coach but not smart enough to figure out which plays to run.

I think our interpretation of his comment on Silas lacks enough information. Does he mean that Silas is not a strong strategist and doesn't do as well developing plays for his teams to run game in/game out? Or does he mean that Silas is weak in designing plays during game situations? Perhaps it's both. I know Silas wants to run more versus setting up in halfcourt situations, but every coach with mediocre talent wants to do that.

I like Rosen. He has taught me a lot relative to the game, and his analysis is always interesting but very pointed in nature.

the knock on silas has always been that he wasnt strong in the xo area of coaching. that is not a new assessment.

Which in my opinion is fine. Assistant coaches get paid thousands of dollars to collaborate real time, in game, and help make decisions. As well as coaching at practices of course.

But this isn't the NFL, this is the NBA where everyone runs the same plays. Where NBA coaches shine are in practice, preparation, and how you deal with the players and motivate them. The NBA is truly a players league but you still need serious COACH-ABLE talent if you want to win many games. Just my opinion.

Are you trying to tell me that Larry Brown ran the same plays that Doc Rivers runs? Sure many plays are the same, there's only so many ways you can do the pick and roll and most teams use it a lot of the time, it's good basketball and doesn't eat much shot clock. But coaches (combined with their PG) are the brain of the team more often than not.

One difference is the timing, making the right call at the right time. The major difference is the players running the plays. John Stockton and Karl Malone ran the same basic plays over and over for well over ten years, and no one was able to stop them.

In my opinion in any elite professional sport the coach does make a difference, His grades are terrible although I agree with what he said about Silas.
