silas expects maggette to carry the load

Silas believes Maggette, entering his 13th season, can return to being a "20-point (per game) scorer" and can become the veteran leader for a young Bobcats team.

"He's going to be the focal point of our offense," Silas said of Maggette. "We're going to rely on him to get it done and he can. That's going to be the starting point and then everybody else has to do their part."

"He's not coming off a very good year and he has to understand that he's the elder statesman of our ballclub and he can do it physically and mentally," Silas said of Maggette, who'll start at small forward. "We're a young club and we have to have somebody that has been there and understands what it takes to get it done. And he does. So we're going to rely on him not only on the court but off the court to keep these guys together and help them understand what pro ball is all about."

if maggette can stay healthy i fully expect him to have his best season as a pro. silas will give him confidence. it wont translate to wins, but he will put up some good stats. i think he is a lock for 20ppg and 6prg.

I have no doubt that Maggette can have a career type season. It probably won't lead to more wins, but with the state of this team and the offense Silas runs, Maggette should score in bunches. He's going to get tons of looks and is going to really be depended on.

Interesting that Silas said we would be active in free agency and want 3 point shooters. Now I don't know his definition of active, probably not the same as our definition.

I mentioned before that I expected Maggette to have a career year and am hoping we can get someone to bite and trade for him.

It'll be good for DJ and Kemba to have someone on the court to pass the ball to who can score - so long as Mags remembers to pass the ball back to them once in a while because they have the ability to score too!

What worries me is that Corey hasn't played a full season in his career, which means that we'll probably lose most of the games when (if) he's out, due to the fact that the team won't be able to score more than 80 points.

As long as it won't produce (many) wins I wish him all the success. Him getting it next year (cause the short season and smaller window to adjust) would be best scenario (not many wins thing still applied).

I forgot all about Maggette. I was wondering who our SF was. Then I thought it was nice how Silas was commenting on the local team and then I remembered that he is our coach.

I'm predicting 25ppg early on, around 20-22ppg by April. Same next year even if we draft a SF. It'll help him secure one last contract with another team. Might even find a team willing to take him for a pick.

If you believe the Cats should tank, this is great news. It's possible that this will also inflate Maggettes trade value to some idiot GM down the road (hopefully not the Warriors, they should have learned their lesson by now).

Yes of course this is great news but Maggette won't last more than 10 games being a focal point of the offense. :( We need him to showcase his one skill (getting to the line) in hopes that a contending team might be able to use him off the bench.

I'm not a fan of players like Maggette who hold the ball for 20 seconds every possession so the sooner we dump him the better. But I can see him as a solid veteran role player off the bench on a good team with a great point guard who will yell at him if he holds the ball for too long. Just get him off our team as quickly as possible so we can properly rebuild with players who share the ball. Then again, having him here almost guarantees us we get a top 3 pick.

At last something Battery and I can agree on. Personally, I hate tanking with Maggette, because the team does not grow while he is doing his thing. You want guys like Henderson to see vets playing the right way - watching the young guys grow is the good part of any tank season, and Maggetteball impedes that.

I think that you are overreacting a bit. Maggette plays hard, and isn't a bad guy. He just is not the ideal guy to lead a team, because he isn't a great passer. But come on we all have balled before how many of us actually liked to pass more than we liked to shoot? Being a playmaker is a special skill. Most of us if we are honest are more like Cory than we would like to admit. We loved to shoot too. Sometimes that love of shooting can get you caught up in the moment, and passes that should have been made get missed.

Yup completely agree. Maggette is bad news on any young rebuilding team. When the ball is in Maggette's hands not only does the rest of the team go to sleep, but like you said there is no team growth. Hopefully he either gets hurt in preseason and misses half the games(likely) or if healthy he selfishly racks up a lot of points (more than likely) and Otis Smith comes calling in February. (100% likely)

This isn't personal. And this isn't Rucker Park or the And1 league. Unless you're a superstar, you should not be hogging the ball.

The problem with todays NBA is there aren't many great passers and that more than anything has killed the beauty of the game. It's too one on one and selfish. Great passing teams are the most fun to watch but unfortunately because of ESPN and YouTube, you mostly get the promotion of fancy dunks. Boring!!! No skill involved there.

I like to pass, I like to watch great passes and I LOVE good ball movement. Those are fun teams to watch. That's what I hope we become.

Also, it's kind of embarrassing for Silas and doesn't make our organization look good when he publicly says he's counting on Maggette to be the face of our franchise this season. As a Bobcats fan I'm mortified our coach would say this. Then again, I don't really have much faith in Silas being a good coach. Not a fan of rolling the balls out and letting them play. Lazy ass. Hopefully Silas won't last long and we get a hard working respectable coach in here.
