Rudy Gay Trade

I know we have the trading the number 2 pick thread, but with so many rumors swirling around about us being interested in this Gay deal I thought it should have its own thread so the ideas are more concentrated instead of spread out page to page in the other thread...
This is not the most ideal situation for us in my opinion, but if we are going to make a deal for Gay I would prefer this...
Charlotte trades: #2 pick, Tyrus Thomas, Gana Diop
Memphis trades: Rudy Gay and 25th pick
The inclusion of both Tyrus and Diop soften the blow of Gays contract to some degree. Yeah it sucks we lose the number 2 pick, but what are chances of us getting a star player to come to Charlotte?
This allows us to keep the cap space gained by Maggettes contract after next season to get another good player to pair with Gay and young core. We look like a much more attractive free agent market. Al Jefferson, James Harden, or Josh Smith are just a few possibilities after next season when we will have a ton of cap space.
Also with the 25th pick we can still grab a solid player to go with 31st or we can package them to maybe move up into one Houston picks or another team in that range.
Here are Gay's Salaries for next 3 seasons:
$16,460,532
$17,888,932
$19,317,326
Diop and Tyrus were scheduled to make this much combined over next three seasons
$8,000,000+$7,372,200= 15,372,200
$8,694,215
$9,388,430
So Basically Gay costs this much more then a TT and Diop Combo per year.
$1,088,332
$9,194717
$9,928,896

Sorry, Rudy Gay is just not worth $19m in one season. He's not worth $16m either. I like the guy but he's making max money and he's not a max guy. We don't want to become the Hawks, we want to become a true contender.
Wait for a guy truly worth max dollars and pay him instead.
I like our #2 pick

I dont love the idea either. That doesnt mean its not worth talking about. Especially when it has a likely chance of happening. I am just trying to spin it off in a positive way.

If we trade for Rudy Gay, it is not going to involve the #2 pick. At least I hope it doesn't.

I think it would have to.
Charlotte Trades: Henderson, Tyrus Thomas, Diop, and Biyombo
Memphis Trades: Rudy Gay
Idk I dont think Memphis would do that and we are giving up a ton.

Why not keep the pick, draft T-Rob and sign a younger, cheaper and possibly better sf in Batum? A frontcourt of Batum, Robinson and Biyombo is young, athletic and exciting.

I just don't think we're desperate enough to lock up that much cap

Unfortunately I beleive that one of the other teams may get Gay and not the Bobcats.
It comes down to the Grizzles wanting too much for him and our cap situation set to go after a major free agent after next season. We have so many 1 year contracts that Cho will want to keep to bring a stud player here.

GRIZ want #2,DJA,Mags,filler for Gay and #25...Losing our starting point means we would have to draft Teague or Wooten at 25 or sign a veteran FA Point Guard? I am sure Cho feels our #2 is worth more and also wants to keep Mags and Diop expiring salaries on books. That said he probably is offering just

DJA, TT, for Gay which Memphis can do better trading with other teams.. Also nobody I've heard wants TT.

Batum is a restricted free agent and it will take at least 10 million to sign him and in this situation we still have both Diop and TT on the payrole so we are not as flexible financially.
I agree a lineup of:
Kemba
Hendo
Batum
Robinson
Biz
Would be kinda nice, but is Batum worth it?

It's not THAT much cap. It's 9 million more each of the two seasons than what we would already have locked up. I mean sure, you could amnesty and technically gain that extra space, but MJ would still have to pay the bills and I doubt that he is ever going to be interested in amnestying anyone. Thomas is on the roster and providing little. If he is going to be on the roster, and they don't think he is going to improve, then why not spend 9 million dollars more to get a 20 ppg YOUNG guy in Gay? Not to mention he also fills a need. It's not like he has 5 years left on his deal either. I just don't see the harm in using essentially 9 million more in cap space. Chances are, were not going to get a star in this draft, so that cap space would do us nothing over the next one to two years in free agency anyway. At least with Gay you have a piece, combined with Kemba/Biz to be somewhat attractive.
Here's our cap situation over the years that Gay would be under contract (assuming just Thomas was sent back since Diop is an expiring anyway):
2012/2013: 51 Million (7 million under cap)
2013/2014: 23 Million (35 million under cap)
2014/2015: 17 Million (41 million under cap)
And by the way, according to the new CBA agreement teams must spend at least 85% of the cap in 2012/2013 and 90% for all following years. That means in 2012/2013, with the cap being 58 million (which coudl change), we would HAVE to spend 49.3 million. Currently, that means we would HAVE to spend 7 million to get within that range. Obviously a chunk of that would go to the 2nd pick, but we would still have to spend money to get above that level. Later years we would have to 52.2 million to stay above the minimum. Sitting at 23 million in 2013/2014, that's a lot of money to spend even with Gay to get to that minimum level. Perhaps Cho, being a numbers guy, looks at it like we don't want to be stuck in a situation where we can't get a star, or all star level player to sign a big deal and are still sitting 15 million below the minimum. That would then result in us spending bad money on average players and getting back to where we were.
So, looking at it that way and seeing that with 35 million in cap space we could still sign two big time players and have room still and instead of having no real assets to sell people on, we would have a 20 ppg playoff experienced vet that could serve as a good piece. Also, for the record, I don't see any of the draft picks being better than the current Gay anyway. Maybe on the same level, but none better. So bottom line, it's really not eating that much of the cap up with Tyrus on the roster. So if Tyrus is included your telling me you wouldn't pay 9 million more for a guy like Gay? And only for 3 years?
This is the trade I would work on:
#2 + Thomas for Gay + #25 + Selby; or perhaps involve a third team.
Still though, I wouldn't be too upset with it and I'm sure Cho doesn't see 9 million extra in cap space as the end all; Not for a player like Gay. He may not be a STAR, but he is still a young guy who is an all star caliber player and can score the rock. I wouldn't mind drafting two either, but I would find it hard to be too upset if we landed Gay.
