Derrick Brown ! More info

Post#1 » by franktony » Fri Sep 21, 2012 1:54 am

Hello guys,

Spurs fan here.

Considering you guys drafted him, I'd like to know more about his game. SAS gave him a non-guaranteed deal and he will be with us in the training camp.

I know he is a 6-8/6-9 forward. How do you guys see him defensively and offensively ? More of a 3 or a 4 ? Can he defend BIGS or he is better defending 3s ?

Thanks in advance
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

we'll miss him. he does both adequately for a backup. he doesn't shoot well

EDIT: He's pretty quick, can jump seriously well (we called him UPS (what can brown do for you?)). He'll catch some alley oops on offense but he's not an initiator. He'll play defense fine. I think he's just a quality third string forward.

He'll be great in San Antonio. Easily the best second rounder we've ever drafted until this year (Jeffery Taylor).

-Led the team in FG% with 51.8%, EFG% with 52.6, and TSS with 55.6%
-Averaged 13/6 per 36.
-Second on the team in PER (14.7) behind Kemba Walker
-Had twice as many WS/48 than anybody else on the team, more than double in OWS
-Best ORtg on the team
-4th lowest TO% on the team

His defense was solid as well. A real steal for the vets minimum. I'm bummed we didn't resign him as he could've been our third stringer at both forward slots.

I like to compare him to Trevor Ariza from the '09 Lakers as I see him being able to fill out that kind of a role on a contender. Brown's strengths are offensive rebounding, solid defense and although he isn't the best shooter (he has got better at it though) he seems to have a good shot selection - he'll make cuts for layups and lately he's been better from the mid-range. If you guys, can improve his long-range shot and he can start making corner threes, he could be a really good asset. There's a reason you signed him, I think Pop also sees that he could give you some good 10-15 minutes.

pros:
offensive rebounding
one on one defending
the ability to finish on the break/alley oops
seems like a really good, low maintenance team mate

cons:
doesnt create his own offense
poor handles
no range on his J
body size

Y'all boy Derrick Brown got waived by the Spurs after averaging 6.6 points & 0.6 rebounds in 15.4 minutes through 5 preseason games. Should the 'Cats pick him up?!?

Well we are at 16 players right now, with a need to cut it to maximum of 15 very soon. I have no problem with UPS back, I just hope we are not going to keep Owens, Summers, Higgins over more promising names which are starting floating around as they are being cut. But that' more fitting into FA thread I guess.

I wrote about him in FA thread. I don't think we would want another center to add to Bismack, Haywood and Gana.

He is lighter than.. always and may be up to something, I haven't followed Spurs so closely but haven't heard much frowning upon keeping him on Spurs roster (some of their fans really want bonner gone). But I won't even try to compare him to Gana Hakeem Diop in debate with you (and Gana is better than used to be in cats uniform). As long as neither of them is first center from bench I am content.

his biggest problem is that he has always been average rebounder, poor defender and awful passer.

so if he's not dominating the post, he is pretty useless.

Agreed.

Not with MKG and JT needing burn. Besides, I would rather T.Will than Brown. He is more well rounded.
