Kemba Walker vs Ramon Sessions

Post#1 » by fatlever » Sun Oct 21, 2012 4:37 pm

its probably as good of a time as any to start the inevitable thread debating between our two point guards, who appear to be similar in value/skill/talent, but play different styles and have different strengths and weaknesses.

argument for kemba
- he has previously relationship with teammates and has already established himself in a leadership role
- chemistry
- lottery pick
- upside
- defense
- speed

argument against kemba
- plays too fast
- not a true point guard
- inefficient
- small
- doesnt always make others better

argument for sessions
- experience
- size
- calming influence on offense
- efficient
- better passer

argument against sessions
- mostly a career backup
- failed in playoffs as a starter when in LA
- new to the roster, should have to clearly win the job to take it from kemba
- not as good of a defender as kemba

neither are great shooters although sessions had nice percentages from 3pt last year, both are solid rebounders for their position, both are good at getting into the paint.

stats thru 5 preseason games
walker: 10.0ppg, 2.3rpg, 3.0apg, 1.3spg, 41%
sessions: 12.4ppg, 4.0rpg, 5.2apg, 0.8spg, 43%

Kemba is the guy you want in the 4th quarter while Sessions is the guy you want early on in the game. So as far as who starts, I say Sessions.

This again?!? You guys haven't learned from Knight/Felton, Felton/Augustin, and Augustin/Walker? You might as well start a Hendo vs BG, MKG vs JT, Mullens vs Tyrus, and a Haywood vs Biyombo thread while you're at it. It would make more sense since rebounding & interior defense are more of weaknesses for this team than guard play right now. It's getting old. There are other positions on the court that decide the outcome of wins & losses.

Ah, yes. The annual pg debate. I went with Sessions because he's a better point guard right now. Kemba as the spark plug off the bench works for me. He'll still get plenty of minutes.

Sessions is merely just insurance incase Kemba doesn't pan out. He's still only 26 years old too, so he has a ton of basketball left to play at a good level. Hopefully a better coaching staff can get Kemba to play like he did in UCONN.

Right now though you have to start Kemba and hope that he gets it. If he isn't showing signs, you can go with Sessions. I wouldn't be shocked to see them play together some this year.

Also, Sessions being a "career backup" is true, but look at his numbers.

16.7 PER, 53.3%TS, 11.1ppg, 3.1reb, 5.1ast.

Last season:

23 starts, 16.7 PER, 53.7 TS%, 11/5/3. Not bad.

I don't care who starts to be honest.

I chose Kemba. I think Kemba is gonna be Kemba this year. Dunlap has a system in place in which Kemba can play his game. Sessions will be a very adequate back up.

man i dont even know why we are having this talk....unless kemba is completely trash you play him and start him. he is younger and has the better upside the bobcats dont gain anything by starting sessions but maybe a few short term wins that dont benefit us in the long term.

I really don't care at all either.

I don't get why people say that Kemba is clutch either... plenty of guys are clutch in college. Plenty are great players. But that doesn't translate all the time. I want to like Kemba. I really do. But nothing that he did last year made me say "this is the guy" ever. Whether he earns the spot or is given the reigns means nothing for this team anyways. Suck azz for Shabazz 2012

Can we wait until we at least see with our own eyes how the two of them are playing?

Pretty much everything so far has been box scores and half arsed write ups.

nope. everyone must pick a side today. no middle ground, no grey areas. then you have to defend your position relentlessly throughout the year, by hyping up your guy and trashing the other one, regardless of how each point guard actually plays. its how we do things ;) its a bobcats board tradition.

Well, then it's pretty simple. Sessions HAS to start.

He has more letters in his name.

the game yesterday was streamed. I also attended the 1st game. I'm beginning to lean to the side of Sessions should start. He's just better than Kemba for now.

in all seriousness, i would give first crack to kemba. he probably deserves that. but i certainly would not hesitate to move sessions to starter if kemba struggles with his fg% or if we keep losing. another year of learning the ways of playing point guard wouldnt be the worst thing for kemba. he has all the tools, he just still needs to learn how to put it all together. but that learning curve cant come at the expense of the offense.

Sesssions would be great to run an offense, if we actually had an offense.
