Play offs watch

Well, as we tend to start next draft threads as soon as we score first preseason losses, considering our great start to this season we may just start another one when this rare opportunity arised.

We are currently 6th seed!

Are we legit? Should Dunlap win Coach of the year? Kemba for MVP! Sessions for 6th man? MKG is the ROY! Diop to All-star Game! Mullens to 3pt contest? Cory Higgins for MIP? Go Cats, win division title!

ImageFor those who didn't get it, this thread is not meant to be dead serious Image

rather funnel and all play offs related discussion (should we make it, will we make it), mocking records of lowly team like Lakers or Celtics, watching the Bulls CHA pick watching thread and other related stuff which is better to have on our board than on GB or other teams' ones - in friendly manner. Glass full poit of view encouraged!

Behind us are
Boston
Philadelphia
__________________________
Atlanta
Indiana
Orlando
Cleveland
Toronto
Detroit
Washington

Which of these are realistic to catch us/leapfrog us?

It's too early but what the heck. We might as well boast while we can. I'm indifferent. I don't know whether to be happy or sad but I most certainly expect Boston and Philly to leapfrog us. I don't know what's going on in Indiana (Roy Hibbert? or Danny Granger injury?) but I expect them to catch us as well as Atlanta. The Washington Wizards may go on a big run when John Wall and Nene recover from injuries but they are still a uncertainty. Based on just looking at this list we may very well be in the playoff hunt. Yay and Ugh!

Putting the playoff talk aside for a second, there are enough question marks in the East that we could unfortunately win 30-35 games. Orlando, Detroit, Toronto, Atlanta, Washington and Cleveland will always be beatable opponents for us barring a rash of injuries. And then there's Milwaukee, which has a rather mediocre roster but has managed a 5-2 start, Philadelphia without its two leading scorers from last season and Bynum, Indiana without Granger, Chicago without Rose...

That's the point - I can see several teams we may not be able to outtank and while unlikely we may actually make playoffs or be amongst two best lottery teams by default losing the pick in the upcoming draft.

If we miss the playoffs, and get the 9th seed, I still think there are about 11 teams in the West that would have better records than some of the Eastern Conference playoff teams.

It's safe to say Miami, Boston, Indiana, Brooklyn, New York, and Chicago are far better teams than us. Philly, Atlanta, and Toronto will likely be better by season end (but who knows??, but really everything else is a toss-up.

I know this thread isn't meant to be real serious, but there's a good chance we're stuck around that dreaded 8th pick.

On the other hand, it would be quite the story if we did make the playoffs.

That would be the greatest single-season improvement ever, right? No team ever has quintupled their win total from the previous season. Then again, most crappy teams would be going 80-2 if they quintupled their win totals. That's mind-blowing and quite depressing.

If we make the playoffs were screwed.

I'm almost OK with that if the 'Cats can make the playoffs and bring positive attention/fanfare to the city of Charlotte. With Nerlens Noel being somewhat similar to Bismack Biyombo and Cody Zeller eerily in the same stratosphere as Byron Mullens (if Mullens ever decided to become a post presence), the only player in the 2013 NBA Draft that should be on the 'Cats watchlist is Shabazz Muhammad. Any prospect outside of Muhammad don't really have a sporting chance at superseding the efforts of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Kemba Walker. The Charlotte Bobcats are looking for a superstar, so if Muhammad isn't all that he's cracked up to be it may be best to miss out on the draft for morale improvement if that type of player may not peak until 2014 in the form of Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, or Julius Randle. Banking on a superstar out of the draft is as risky as gambling with a million dollars. That superstar player that the 'Cats are looking for may just be found in free agency if Charlotte can become that much of an up & coming attraction, and making the playoffs with this youthful roster could very well do that. For instance, Rudy Gay will be entering his prime while becoming a free agent in 2014 and I doubt that the Grizzlies will have as much money to retain him as the Bobcats should have to offer him. There's other scenarios, but that's just an example.

We made the playoffs before. How much positive attention/fanfare did that bring Charlotte?

They need to tank it out

There's a difference between going to the playoffs as a 8th seed with tapped out veterans leading the way and blossoming under-25 year old stars in the making paving the way

I agree. Some of you guys are acting like it would be the end of the world. Surely, we could use another pick, but come on guys, at the end of the day the point of playing any kind of sport is winning. If the team is good enough to be a 8th seed, so be it.

It was also our "first time ever" going to the playoffs and was supposed to legitimize the franchise. That went well.

We were the 7th seed in 2010 btw, not the 8th.

YeAh, that went well before Jordan realized that his pockets were headed for the luxury tax with two of his best players already reaching their ceilings, and decided to blow it up to save money on a upstart franchise that was going to be on a treadmill without a marketable player to generate merchandise revenue on the roster

I agree, too. I'm more concerned, though, that this team will finish with around 33 wins.

The point of playing isn't "winning". The goal is this:
