We need a thread dedicated to our poor 1st quarters and poor 1st half performances. I know Vorbis has been keeping a list.

Lets post some of the disturbing stats

from the game thread via Vorbis

vorbis wrote:updated list: now in 34 games the bobcats have been down by double digits in the 2nd quarter 15 times. around 44% of their games. i have documented the biggest deficit the bobcats faced in the 2nd quarter in each of these games to illustrate how they are getting themselves in huge holes that they cannot dig out of in the 2nd halves.

jazz game tonight: bobcats down 63-42 in the 2nd
pistons game: bobcats down 58-45 in the 2nd (bobcats ultimately won)
cavs game: bobcats down 46-30 in the 2nd
nets game: bobcats down 56-38 in the 2nd
heat game: bobcats down 52-33 in the 2nd
nuggets game: bobcats down 64-46 in the 2nd
warriors game: bobcats down 39-25 in the 2nd
2nd suns game: bobcats down 59-40 in the 2nd quarter
atlanta game: down 58-41 in the 2nd quarter
warriors game: down 58-40 in the 2nd
spurs game: down 57-41 in the 2nd
bucks game: down 58-40 in the 2nd
thunder game, down 64-24 in the 2nd (jfc)
hawks game, down 55-41 in the 2nd
suns game, down 56-44 in the 2nd

i'd like to see a list of the scores at the end of the 1st quarter for each game. also a list of over stats for 1st quarter compared to opponents. any sites break down 1st quarter stats for the year?

Poor lineups and rotations on top of a poor defensive game plan. That is all.

The way our defense is playing we'd have to be the best offense in the league to have a chance to win half our games.

My feeling on it is that last year we were horrible at defending shots near the paint. This year we're horrible at defending both the paint and the three point line. Clearly making the guards crowd the inside(using a zone) is not working. Not only are other teams still scoring inside but it's also giving wide open 3s. Let kemba hendo and JT defend man to man, i think they are adept enough to take away the uncontested 3s and we'll have to live with getting hammered at the rim which is happening anyway.

That has to be close to some kind of NBA record.

I think a part of our defensive woes is our perception around the league. I'm sure that almost every opposing player get a extra boost of confidence before the game even start knowing that he's playing against the Bobcats and that usually ends in a good shooting night for that or those said players.

We need to go out and destroy our opponents for a couple games in a row. That would boost our confidence a lot and might even catch eyes around the league. Obviously, that's easier said than done with this roster.

7 of the last 10 games bobcats have fallen down by double digits before halftime. only in the pistons game did the bobcats come back to win, and it took overtime. i wish they could let games slip away more slowly.

I've been thinking the same thing. It's kind of like going out and playing a pick up game against a team of old ladies; you'd probably be hitting shots you wound't normally be hitting as you'd be more confident  When teams play against the "bobcats" their confidence is automatically going to be spiked and as a result they tend to hit a high FG percentage.

tonight vs. raptors - down 41-20 in the 2nd quarter. that makes 16 times in 35 games the bobcats have been down by double digits in the 1st half. in fact they were down 10 almost immediately and never got closer for the whole game.

Poor starts finishing Bobcats early

The Observer crunched the numbers.....

Did they - or did they just rip the observation made by vorbis and then just lift all his numbers????

it's not like it's an obscure trend. the only thing obscure about it is that nobody watches the bobcats. i'm just glad to see a story about them in a newspaper, to be honest.

its time the media, the fans, the coaches and the players make a big deal about our awfuul 1st quarters. they are killing this team. glad bonnell put this piece together. the coaches should be trying every different combination to try to get the 1st quarter problems fixed. nobody on this team should be guaranteed a starting spot, not when we are getting our doors blown out in the 1st quarter.
