Observer - Bobcats interested in Oden

I hear the Bobcats are among many NBA teams keeping tabs on Greg Oden, the former No. 1 pick center looking to make a comeback from chronic knee problems. Oden will have a lot to consider; opportunity to play, opportunity to win, earning power. There’s even been a suggestion the Cleveland Clinic’s medical reputation works in the Cavaliers’ favor.

Cavaliers would probably be a better bet for Oden than the Bobcats but we can always hope. If we could land Oden to a three year vet min deal with the last year a team option I'd say he'd be worth the risk.

No way we'd get him for vet min. If we offered him around 3mil a year we'd have a chance.

He probably needs at least 6 million to rebuild himself.

Im not very educated on NBA contracts as opposed to the NFL. Does the NBA have or is it normal to give out incentive laden contracts? No way would I give him any type of guaranteed deal.

Not sure how incentives would affect the salary cap, but there are incentives built into contracts.

Recently, the Kings placed incentives in Sean May's contract based on his weight and Memphis wanted to make Xavier Henry's contract only reach 120% after incentives.

Ben Gordon has small incentives on his salary. I don't know the rules on incentives, but they are definitely out there.

I would definitely like to take a flyer on Greg Oden, I just don't know how many of us would go out and buy cyanide capsules the second he starts playing well and then goes down with an injury.

Right now the Bobcats front court has hit rock bottom. We have no post threat. We have no great rebounder. Our interior defense is a joke. Im not going to pretend like Oden is going to magically fix all of that, but I will say that Im pretty tired of seeing Mullens/Biyombo/Hayward suck. Anything that could inject any post play offense and rebounding would be nice to see. But it all depends on the price.

@SamAmicoFSO: Heat have removed themselves from Greg Oden derby, sources say. Both Cavs and Bobcats prepared to make Oden offer after trading deadline.

That's great news to read. I'm still expecting Oden to spurn us though.

I couldn't imagine Oden turning down a chance to play with Irving.

We'd have to offer him more guaranteed money. Even then I don't know if he takes it. Still I like that we are trying.

Give him Diop's 7 million and the worst you can do is even. If he suffers yet another potential "career-ending" injury then he will become useless - same as Diop.

cavs have more cap space and can offer as much playing time for a team close to where he went to school.

that being said, why is anyone interested in getting in a bidding war for this guy? i'm torn on this one. obviously if we can sign him to a cheap 1 or 2 year partially guaranteed deal, it would be worth exploring. i just dont believe this guy will ever be able to play quality minutes again for more than small stretches of a season.

this was on hoopshype a few days ago

Source: #Cavs prepared to offer Oden a 2 year deal with a team option for a third year after trade deadline The Cavs are expected to offer free agent center Greg Oden a two-year contract with a team option for a third year after the Feb. 21 trade deadline passes, a league source said. The Cavs have about $4 million in cap space, which they are preserving now for potential trades. Teams around the league don't want to sign Oden until after the trade deadline. Sulia

are we prepared to beat that offer for a player who hasnt played in 2-3 years?

We should be prepared. Our rebuild is looking iffy right now and this might be the closest we'll be to landing a big name free-agent without offering a max contract.

i for one hope so. that is exactly the kind of risk the bobcats can afford to take right now.

Would paying Greg Oden say $3 mil a year for a 3 years be any worse then the amount of money we paid Diop for all these years?

If Odens willing to sign a 3 year contract, not a 1 year tryout, I say sign him.

Making the mistake with Diop doesn't justify doing the same thing with a different guy
