WT: Shaw turned down Bobcats

Post#1 » by fatlever » Fri Mar 15, 2013 4:30 pm

i cant remember if we knew shaw got an offer and turned us down or not. did we know that? i honestly dont remember hearing that we made an offer to shaw. so dunlap was our 2nd, possibly 3rd choice (depending on what really happened with sloan).

Brian Shaw turned down an offer to coach the Charlotte Bobcats, who currently hold the NBA’s worst record.

"I want to be in a situation where I have a chance," Shaw said. "Usually when you come into your first head coaching job, you don't get to dictate what the situation is going to be. But you want a chance and an organization that has a game plan going forward that's sustainable and where you have some pieces of value where you can put things together and get on the fast track."

Shaw also interviewed for vacant head coaching positions during the offseason with the Portland Trail Blazers and Orlando Magic.

"I'm perceived as just a triangle guy," Shaw said. "I have conversations with Phil [Jackson] and I said, 'I thought working for you and playing for you would be my biggest asset going into interviews. Actually it's been my biggest liability.'

"We've laughed about it. He's said to me on more than one occasion, 'It's best for you to distance yourself from me and our system.' "

Shaw has spent the past two seasons as the Indiana Pacers' associate coach, partly serving as a mentor for head coach Frank Vogel.

"When he gets an opportunity," Vogel said, "he's going to be a coach of the year candidate every single year."

True. Can't say I blame him, though. Like taking over the helm of the Titanic as they're playing it down on deck.

So he basically said that this franchise has no future.

I can't remember Shaw making it to the final list of candidates.

I kind of figured that Brian Shaw turned us down when we suddenly did the unexpected and went back to hire one of the underwhelming earlier preliminary candidates in Mike Dunlap. The same way I believe that the legendary Jerry Sloan gracefully bowed out of the candidacy when they didn't hire him immediately after him showing interest in our lowly franchise.

I dont believe it for a second. brian shaw is not in a position to turn down NBA jobs, he may never get another shot. what really happened is he got told we were going in a another direction and wants to save face, at the same time dig at the bobcats and get his name out there as a coaching candidate.

well, if brian shaw were my dream coach i wouldn't like hearing that he wouldn't want to take over a difficult situation, but at the same time it's not the worst professional sense. one thing dunlap appears to have in spades is no coaching obstacle is too big or too small for him. he's a micro AND macro manager, through and through. so...give him that, i guess?

No Fats, there was nothing about this in the media. What I want to know is if these guys didn't want to coach here why did they interview? Why fly accross country to interview for a job you don't even want? Sounds like a little kid telling an older sibling I didn't want none of your ice cream anyway.

They probably wanted to see the franchise's landscape and figure out if they could mold the team into something. Apparently Shaw didn't think so.

Dude is lying, how are you going to interview for a job then turn it down? he'd be a horrible head coach like Kurt Rambis, thats why he never got the oppurtunity

I don't see how this reflects well on him. If you're a franchise with an opening and this guy threw a previous team who's job he didn't get under the bus, do you want to talk to him? No discretion=no class imo.

He doesn't necessarily have to be lying. You have to interview or at least meet with someone in the organization to discuss the basketball club. Just like you interview for any job. Most people don't just accept jobs, they usually like to see what the company is like (and the company usually likes to see what the candidate is like as well) before they just accept or turn down a position.

Also, if you do a google search for "Brian Shaw candidate Charlotte", there are quite a few links that came up talking about him being a possible candidate for the Bobcats coaching position so obviously it was out there.

This one even had a poll and it seemed the majority that took the poll wanted Shaw.

We wanted Brian Shaw. He wasn't interested in his much anticipated coaching debut after being Phil Jackson's protege being a tank job so he declined our offer. He just isn't as experienced or professional as Jerry Sloan was to refrain from commenting on what should've been confidential information.

"I took myself out today," Sloan said by phone. "I don't want to comment on it because it's never profitable for anybody. It just makes it sound like you're making a statement about someone. But they were wonderful and there were no problems. I just took myself out."

Take notes Shaw. Whether asked or not this is how the situation should've been handled.

He was never offered the job. We may have wanted to interview, but it is presumptuous of him to think we would have given it to him. Clearly on Dunlap's introductory pressor, there was only one person that was offered the job, and it was Dunlap. One offer, one acceptance.

Shaw is just wanting to try and explain why he is still an assistant, and not a head coach yet, and that he is desireable for the right fit. Don't make us look bad just to try and save face, try and have some class please.
Who I woulda took:
2023: Miller | 2022: Duren | 2021: Bouknight, Jones | 2020: Ball | 2019: PJ | 2018: MPJ | 2017: Monk | 2016: Damian Jones | 2015: Winslow | 2014: Vonleh, Napier | 2013: McLemore | 2012: MKG | 2011: Knight, Kawhi

I don't buy it. How is he didn't speak up when we were above 50% team? Now he probably thinks it is safe to say this to paint the rejection with different colours.
