The Steven Adams thread

I started this thread since Cho mentioned our biggest needs being defense and rebounding. If that's true, then I think we should trade down and draft Adams where it makes sense.
I'm not a stats guru at all but check these advanced numbers against the highly touted Len and Zeller:
Adams
Len
Zeller

If I was a GM with a top-5 pick, and I had to choose between Cody Zeller or Steven Adams, I would take Zeller...
...and even that would be a punishment.

This is very reminiscent of the Royce White thread that popped up last year

But I really like this guy, definitely one of my top 10 favorites for us.
I know there have been reports that we only want to bring in one rookie this year, but I'd love to explore getting Portland's pick (10th) and taking Adams. Maybe a long shot, but maybe they'd rather lose the 10th pick in a "weak" draft then risk losing 13 or 14 in a perceived better draft next year.

He did say trade down. If we landed at 9 or 10 I think we need to look at this guy.i

I might as well start a Kelly Olynyk thread then.

Go for it. With people assuming that what Cho said is the plan there are not a lot of bigs other than Len that are projected around our current pick. A trade down seems more likely if we are going for rebounding.

Steve Adams is exactly the same as Biz really, both have very poor offensive games, very good shot blockers and defenders, and move the court very well. No point in taking another project. I'd pick Len or Zeller over Adams any day no question.

Olynky seems like a guy who will get some love now but end up being a bust in the pros.

Cho is just throwing smoke screens out there, or just saying whatever first comes to mind when being asked by a reporter because he probably gets asked the same question multiple times a day...
First its draft talent trade for need, now its drafting need (rebounding)
I wouldn't put much into what he says, because he isn't going to tip his hand in what he is really thinking, nor should he.

Adams is a project and I would have preferred he stayed in school another year. I think he'll be pretty rough the first 1-2 years but I think he has the potential to be the best big in this draft. His learning curve won't be as long as Bismack's b/c he has more innate feel for the game and I love how he said that he knows he has a way to go but will "dominate certain tasks." If those tasks are rebounding and defense, we can have a poor man's Drummond. I think he can turn into a rich man's Tiago Splitter which to me is arguably a top 5 pick in this draft. For sure I have guys like Oladipo, McLemore, Noel and maybe Bennett ahead of him but if we traded down, he should be first priority. Of all the big white dudes, I like him the best by far.

The only way I would like Steven Adams as a pick for the Bobcats is if the team was already on pace for a playoff push, limited in cap space, and void of any big men on the roster. Charlotte however does somewhat fit the lone latter requirement, but they've already invested so much in Bismack Biyombo that it would be null & void to bring in another project like Adams. There's always the argument that Biyombo could play PF, but I strongly disagree and believe that he's strictly a C.

I think Biyombo is too young to pencil him in as strictly a C. At this point, there isn't a big difference b/w PF and C nowadays anyway. I wouldn't let Biyombo's status cost us from drafting a great big man, again. If Adams looks like he's capable of getting buckets (or Biyombo is showing ability to during the offseason) then you have to seriously consider this guy.

I can see him flying up a lot of draft boards over the next few weeks. I'm really interested. Would I draft him top 5? Maybe not, but if we do that deal to move down for Williams and #9 or something, I would definitely support drafting him.

I'll consider penciling Biyombo in at another position other than C when he shows the ability to defend a mobile big. From what I've seen Biyombo struggles defensively with almost every big that has a hint of athleticism and lateral movement. I understand that Biyombo is still improving & he could be around that learning curve as soon as tomorrow, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it.
All this talk about Adams, and I'm willing to bet that he won't even average over 20 minutes per game in his rookie season.

Mobile athletic bigs is what he defends the best.

That's why he has matches up with Dwight Howard well.
It is the bigs with proper C size and post moves like Kanter or Jefferson that he struggles with. And I don't know what Adam's rookie mpg averages have to do with anything. That's very situation dependent. MKG only averaged 26 mpg with us and he was our starting SF.

Since when has Biz been able to defend mobile bigs? Biz is not a PF because he wouldn't stand a chance in hell defending against a Chris Bosh, Zach Randolph, David West, Josh Smith, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, or David Lee, and that's without mentioning the stretch 4's like Ryan Anderson. To stay on topic though I don't want no parts of Steven Adams. Not even if we can trade into the late lottery. Adams' is a mid-to-late 1st round talent where it's more low risk for the potential high reward if you ask me.

Zach Randolph isn't a mobile big. Biyombo can guard most of those guys fine, it isn't their mobility that kills Biz, it's their post moves and 3 pt range. Biz is plenty mobile and athletic to guard most anybody, one of his strongest suits is P&R defense b/c he does a great job of hedging and guarding smaller guys on switches.

Biz can't even guard Tristan Thompson and I'll leave it at that. I do not want Steven Adams on our team the same way I didn't want Royce White on our team when I was a avid lurker
