Bobcats to Amnesty Thomas

Post#1 » by Nanogeek » Thu Jul 4, 2013 7:11 pm

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/22 ... rus-Thomas

No reason to do this unless we are going to sign another free agent this year. We could have held on to him to see if he got a clue or could be traded and amnesty him next year if we needed to clear cap space. Another bone head move. Draft Zeller, overpay AJ, prematurely amnesty TT... the only thing that would make this offseason worse is if we sign Tyler Hansborough.

I suppose we had to amnesty TT to be able to keep Gerald after overpaying AJ. Just more fallout from the AJ signing.

I haven't looked at the cap, but it's a great move if it gives us a better chance of signing McBob.
Humble yourself.

It was either Tyrus or lose out on Hendo (or any other FAs). Having both effectively would cap us out (only $1m in space) and we would only have 11 guys under contract. Keeping the useless Tyrus over Hendo or another FA we could actually use doesn't make sense to me.

The only way to sign Al was to either renounce Hendo or amnesty Tyrus. With Hendo's $7.7m cap hold, and assuming Al's deal is structured something like $12.7m-$13.7m-$14.7m, then we currently have about $2m in cap space...and that's with only 9 guys under contract (though Zeller makes 10 once he signs, and his cap hold is the same as his salary, so signing him won't cost us any space).

If we can sign Hendo to like $6.5m per, since contracts typically increase each year his first season may only be about $5m to 5.5m, that would free up additional $2m or so for a total of $4m in space and 11 players. I'm not a fan of signing Big Al, but we can still least make a run at McBob or another decent FA or two. We could certainly use a shooter as well.

We have bird rights to sign Henderson, McRoberts (correct me on the latter). We needed to amnesty Tyrus to be able to make an offer to Jefferson. Because FAs count as cap holds unless we claim not to sign them. We cap go over the cap, we just have to have exceptions to do that (anytype of bird rights, bi-annual, mle, min) or do a trade with matching numbers.

Thomas gone has nothing to do with Henderson, except that we didn't give up on signing him/ matching other team¨s offer.

I have to think we renounced McBob's bird rights since there's no way we pay him what his cap hold is worth. We wouldn't pay Hendo his full $7.7m cap hold either, but at least his hold makes him restricted, unlike McBob.

Agreed. With the AJ offer we either had to give up on Henderson or amnesty Thomas. What would have been ideal is to keep Thomas in hopes he might be used as a trade chip (expiring deal) or perhaps even come around and play basketball AND resign Henderson, keep our powder dry and wait until 2014 when we might have a nice draft pick and enough cap space to bring in two free agents.

Tyrus was never going to be turn it around and be a decent player. His cap space is worth more than any expiring deal that we could have used him for.

Looking at the numbers you are right we probably had to renounce McRoberts as well. Does that mean we can't sign him anymore at all or we just can do it only with cap space or by using another exception (not the bird rights one)?

Long overdue- had to be done if we're going to re-sign Hendo. McBob and mully have to be renounced but we can get Mully for the min and McBob will the room exception of 2.5M

How is this being cheap? It's the exact opposite, if anything. The man still has to pay Tyrus, it's just that his salary doesn't count against our cap.
