Rookie (ROY) Watch

I figured we need a place to rant and rave about the new crop of NBA rooks, especially considering we have our very own ROY candidate in Z-Rex (do we have an official nickname yet?).
I know the returns are early, but thus far, it looks like Oladipo will be a serious ROY candidate, despite the TO's.
I've managed to catch Bennett, some Olynyk and Pressey, and - of course - Zeller. Bennett looks to have serious conditioning issues, but has very real offensive potential. He's also as short as advertised. The game I saw Olynyk play he struggled, but from the boxes seems to be finding his groove. Been happy with Zeller thus far - his speed and rebounding are very good - just think he needs to get his name called a bit more on the offensive end of the court to be in serious contention for ROY.

I don't see anyone in this draft that deserves to contend for ROY, but Oladipo is looking a lot better than I expected. At times, so is Bennett.

i'd be shocked if oladipo isnt rookie of the year. he is averaging 13ppg, 8rpg, 5apg, 2spg on 50% shooting. yeah, its a small sample size, but it is also an indication of just how he is going to fill up the box score each night. he just looks like he belongs. he'll get all the minutes he can handle, even if that means afflalo gets traded.

Dipo is my early pick. He should be getting plenty of burn and with his activity he should fill up the stat sheet somewhere most of the time. McLemore didn't look that bad in the Kings game I watched. If the Kings are functional enough that he can be a 3+D guy and not do too much I think he'll look fairly good.
I don't know if Zeller is going to get the gaudy numbers needed to win ROY as a Bobcat playing with the starters.

based on how little our point guards have been passing to our bigs this preseason, i'd say CZ has no chance at ROY.

Somebody else to keep an eye on (not necessarily for the ROY conversation) is MCW. Shooting 38% from the 3 in the preseason. 8 pts, 5 asst, 3.8 reb, 1.5 stls, 1 TO. I seriously think that 38% will drop, but if it doesn't the Sixers are going to be very, very happy with that pick.

Exactly. There were at least 15 instances last game where Zeller, McRoberts or Biyombo were wide open after setting a pick, especially Zeller. Zeller sets picks out there like a mad man.

i almost thought you said Diop

but yea Oladipo will probably win, hes like MKG with a better jumpshot and he will play a lot, probably 13ppg 5reb 4ast 1.5stls and a block

1-Oladipo
2-Burke (should play a lot so that will help his stats)
3-Olynyk (same reason as Burke)
4-Zeller (probably leads rookies in rebounding)
5-Bennett (log jam at PF with Thompson probably wont play that much (25mpg) he needs to get in shape cant guard SF's)
6-MCW (play a lot and lead rooks in assists)

Burke is going to be out for about 2-3 months with that broken finger. I think he's out of the ROY watch for the foreseeable future

Giannis Antetokounmpo & Dennis Schröder are the easy choices, but Sergey Karasev on the Cavs could be the "random" one that may come out of nowhere to the casual NBA fan

Watched the OKC game this evening. Steven Adams looked quite good, finished w/ 10 &15. Not gonna threaten for ROY obviously but he's gonna be a player not a stiff.

I actually am not that big of a fan of that Karasev pick. Time will tell, maybe I'm wrong.
Vitor Faverani could have a sneaky good stretch when (if) the Celtics bigs have injury problems.

Henry Sims putting up some quietly solid preseason #'s for the Cavs. Would look much better on our bench that Patrick O'Bryant. Oh well, hindsight...

Hopefully Pat OBryant doesn't contribute to this team at all and it all becomes a moot point.
I don't really care about the end of bench guys, I want Biz and Zeller to keep developing.
Best of luck to Sims, I hope he can tag along as a 12th man some where.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/98409 ... leep-apnea"It's been tiring to watch him because every time I watch him he's (gasping)," Brown said. "It makes me tired, so I try not to look at him. I tell him, `If you need a sub, just tell me. Otherwise I'm not going to look at you."
Jeesh. Good luck, kid.

yeah, that sucks. sleep apnea can be dealt with a little bit through weight-loss and exercise. just saying. although exercise can be tricky if your asthma is acting up. i wonder to what extent cleveland knew about the sleep apnea. obviously it won't really be an issue while he's playing, since he's awake. he was having a rough time during the game against the bobcats. i guess the cleveland scouts saw enough from him to take him #1 despite these issues which could pop up from time to time.

I have apnea and have to wear a CPAP at night when I sleep.
If anything it would more of an issue when he is playing because it impacts your energy levels.
