Bobcats FT Shooting

Post#1 » by fatlever » Mon Nov 4, 2013 12:40 am

we are last in the league at 61%

bonnell has a blog post about this today

http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_n ... flaws.html

Here’s how that applies to Saturday’s bad loss in New Orleans. During the course of post-game interviews I asked Clifford about the Bobcats’ horrible foul-shooting (now last in the NBA at 61.1 percent) and what can be done about it.

Clifford said he wasn’t trying to “absolve” himself of blame, but there’s only so much coaching can do about various players making their free throws. He said that’s an individual-responsibility issue, too.

That was classic Stan. Clifford wasn’t dodging the question. I think he was implying that if someone is making millions at the NBA level, and he’s been off from games for six months, then he ought to address his foul-shooting issues. And if that’s not the case, then perhaps that reflects more on the individual than the system.

Do I think Clifford is doing what he can in practice to make foul-shooting better? Sure. Clifford is what baseball types call a “lifer” – probably too engaged by his job, rather that too little.

only 3 players over 70% - mcroberts (100), adrien (75) and hendo (72).

surely positive regression will improve some of these numbers. kemba, sessions, mkg and biz are well below their career numbers.

i expect Biz to be bad, if he shoots 55% for season i'll be happy, but MKG,Kemba and Sessions are all good FT shooters (75% for MKG and 80%+ for Sess and Kemba), its just 3 games tho no way the team shoots this bad all season and if they do well at least it helps our lottery chances

Eh this will work itself out. Between Taylor and MKG missing that obviously brings it down, and Walker will be just fine. Biyombo being bad at free throws is a given, although he did pretty well in the preseason.

d'oh! Thanks.

I'm in "too small of sample size" camp right now. We're only 3 games in and we're already doing some lineup juggling thanks to Al being out so I'm not worried about it right now. Once the rust wears off we should be decent at least.

Get used to it. Bonnell has already used the SVG reference 46 times. Atleast hes developed a positive man crush.

I always thought SVG was wildly overrated.

Gee, surround Dwight Howard with 3pt shooters, what a **** genius.

JVG is the genius of that family in my opinion. I love watching him call games, almost as much as Hubie Brown. They can dissect a play in a nanosecond, and a lot of the time can call stuff before it actually happens.

Getting back to the subject of Free Throws, I agree with Fats. Not all of our guys can shoot this bad from the line all season long. They will improve somewhat, but we have to expect we're going to be in the basement of the league when it comes to free throw percentage. We will probably have to take a few losses on the chin this season due to foul shots alone, but hell half this board wants us to lose for the pick
Mike Malone was never given a fair chance in Sacramento, and Ranadive will soon come to regret that, when he's on top of the WC inevitably contending somewhere

They were a pretty bad FT shooting team last year too. They were 5th in attempts, but only 18th in %. As it stands, the Bobcats pretty much negate their own strength.

From memory, we've always been a below average FT shooting team. That's probably because we've always been a below average team

08-09 season - 27th in FT%

09-10 season - 20th in FT%

10-11 season - 21st in FT%

11-12 season - 20th in FT%

12-13 season - 18th in FT%

As it stands, the Bobcats pretty much negate their own strength.

This is true. We get to the FT line a lot, thanks mainly to Sessions, Kemba and Hendo.

I think it's just rust and early season jitters for the most part. I'm confident our FT shooting will improve. Sesh, Kemba and Hendo are 80% FT shooters and MKG, JT are 73% - 70% career FT shooters. So the percentages should trend upward eventually...hopefully, immediately.

i dont think having a below average team is a reason it be a bad FT shooting team for example last season, Dallas and Sacramento both average-below average teams where in the top 11 in FT% with Dallas being #2

Charlotte has some good FT shooters but not great ones like Kemba,Sessions etc.and bad FT shooters like Biz, above average + horrible = below average, but you can win shooting below average, the Bobs shot better than 7 playoff teams from the FT line

Oladipo is a monster. I bet clifford won't be talking about us having the best rookie anymore. It makes me wonder if the FO would have chosen him.

He'll come down to earth eventually. He's playing great though.

By below average, i meant below average shooters. The point is, our FT shooting stinks to high hell right now, but i don't think that will continue.
