Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
Somebody help me, I am stuck in an Allman Brothers, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed loop. I'm currently listening to my 6th version of the day. There's about 30 different version available on Spotify and probably 100 more on Youtube.
It's hard to beat the most famous version though, the one from the original Live at Filmore album. It's only 13 minutes, but it's definitely the cleanest and most furious of versions. The 70-71 versions have both Dicky Betts and Duane Allman. There are some good versions from the mid 70s that have only Betts. Those are a little slower and feature a long piano solo. The early 90s versions with Warren Haynes are also pretty sick.
Random story about this song... Growing up I was forever trying to get my dad to listen to good music. For the most part he tolerated and sometimes appreciated my tastes in jam bands, jazz, R&B, mostly from the 70s (odd that I was the one trying to get him to listen to music from his generation.) Anyway, one day he and I were chilling at the house on a Saturday, nobody else around that day. I convinced him to let me play him this version of Allman Brother Elizabeth Reed promising he would not be disappointed. I had him sit on the floor in between the stereo speakers and I cranked this 13 minute version. He obliged and listened to the whole thing, didn't say a word. He sat motionless, with his eyes closed. I half-thought he fell asleep. And when it was done he opens his eyes and says "That was **** fantastic!"
How would you rank the guitarists who played with the Allman Brothers?
In no order:
Dicky Betts
Duane Allman
Warren Haynes
Jimmy Herring
Derek Trucks
It's impossible, right? In terms of composition, I always preferred Betts' jazzier songs and style. In terms of in your face solos, I actually lean towards Haynes, even though Duane was the OG. To be fair, I kinda checked out on the AB by the time Herring and Trucks were playing with them regularly. I did get to see Trucks take the stage with the ABs back when he was a kid. They brought him out for a few songs back in like 91 at a show I saw. Pretty cool.

Cody - Cody leading the break
MKG - an you just keep goin goin goin
Frank - yep

^ these are so awesome.
I remember clearly watching the '11 NCAAs the announcer saying that Michael Jordan thought Kemba had "Swag" and being certain in that instant that CHA would draft Kemba and being so disappointed because I thought Kemba would always be too small to lead a championship team.
Belly laugh at Frank, I missed again
and love the Lazy Lighting tune for Nic, perfect

^80s NBA commercials had the best selection of plays. Solid footage for every theme, whether it was dunks, assists, fun player reactions or mishaps.

This led me to T Pain's tiny desk video, and wow he can sing. Only knew him after his auto-tune days. He kills it.

OK, lets do this... Are you ready for vocal jazz? Of course you are. It's an acquired taste, no doubt.
1. Blue Rondo A La Turk (cover of Dave Brubeck jazz standard, but with lyrics and vocals) If you just want to hear the sick vocal solo, skip to 1:51. This is Al Jarreau at his best, taking jazz standards, giving them lyrics and adding a crazy ass vocal jam in the middle. Steve Gadd on drums #Legend
2. Roof Garden - Does anyone wanna go waltzing in the garden, does anyone wanna go dance up on the roof? Funk + vocal jams starting at 3:46 (til the end). George Duke on keys, Steve Gadd on drums #HesEverywhere
3. Spain (cover of Chick Corea/Return to Forever jazz standard, with lyrics). If you don't want the slow intro, skip to 1:22. Vocal solo at 4:35. Once again, Steve Gadd on drums #GreatestEver
4. Rainbow In Your Eyes - Great funky soul
5. Take Five (cover of Dave Brubeck) another great cover of a Dave Brubeck song.
Bonus
We're In This Love Together - biggest hit?
Moonlighting Theme
Closer To Your Love
Distracted
Breakin Away
Your Song (Elton John cover)

Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
I always forget how genius he was at setting words to jazz tunes like that. And the unparalleled scat singing. Especially love the Brubeck tunes
I have to confess my other favorite Jarreau tune along with the George Benson Breezin' is the unabashedly joyful "Mornin."
