DISCUSS.

Spoiler:
Image

He is the absolute worst ref in the league currently. He's 74 years old. We are currently 0-4 when he officiates our games this season. Plus, per his WIKIPEDIA Page:

Allegations of game fixing[edit]
Bavetta was one of three referees for the Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Kings and the Lakers. Former referee Tim Donaghy has alleged that at least one of the referees working this game had subjective motives for wanting the Lakers to defeat the Kings, and made officiating calls to effectuate this outcome.[17][18] The NBA has not permitted Bavetta to speak publicly regarding the incident, though The New York Times reported on June 12, 2008 that the FBI is investigating allegations that Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals had been manipulated to further the series to a seventh game. Even the television announcers commented on how obvious it was that the fix was in.[19]

In a 2002 article, Bill Simmons named the worst officiated games of the prior four years, alleging that the games involved either extending a series so it did not end quickly or advancing a large market team for the NBA's benefit. All seven games named had been officiated by Bavetta. [20]

Please NBA, do the league a favor and relieve Mr Bavetta of his duties.

the officiating in the league has been miles better than it was between the mid90s to mid00s. there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the league instructed certain refs to extend playoff series and if possible push thru big market teams and superstars to the finals. over and over and over during that time, if there was a game 6 with a small market team leading a big market team, you can bet the officiating would favor the big market team. almost all situations where you had a game 7 of a conf finals the officiating favorted the team with the biggest market or superstar.

the blatant biased officiating seems to have calmed down a tad in the wake of both the 2006 finals and the scandal with donaghy. i think the 2006 finals caused such an outrage and attracted so much media attention the league had no choice but to clean up the officiating. i also think the, trying to prevent more shady superteams, has sided more with smaller markets lately.

the most blatant examples of biased officiating that i can recall during that time period are:

suns (with barkley) vs sonics in the 1993 WC finals, game 7.
bulls (with jordan) vs pacers in 1998 EC finals, game 7
lakers (with shaq/kobe) vs blazers in 2000 WC finals, game 7
lakers (with shaq/kobe) vs kings in 2002 WC finals, game 6
heat (with shaq/wade) vs mavs in 2006 finals, game 6

for old hornet fans, game 6 of the bucks vs hornets 2nd round series made me want to kick puppies, but i'm not sure that can be blamed on a big market/superstar bias.

there is not doubt that bavetta has always has the reputation for being stern's go-to ref.

In my opinion, it's as easy as this - we all obviously know that your ability to instantly react gets worse with age. How the hell can we have a 74-year-old ref in such a fast sport where possibly illegal contact between players is occurring every other second? All due respect to Bavetta and the shape he's always in but you can't tell me that his age doesn't affect his ability to call a basketball game.

Either he's a cheater or he's senile and either way he should be fired. He missed two huge calls in OT that cost us the game. Not to mention how many stupid fouls he's called on our team. Something's not right with this guy

I been saying calling for dick bavetta forced retirement for years and no one listens to me. There is just no way he can still be a competent ref at 74 years old

Maybe they don't want to fire or pressure him into retiring and our waiting for him to go out on his own terms because if he was involved purposely favoring certain teams he could expose this about NBA if he were to be bitter about being forced out of the league. Just a thought.
