I think we could have out tanked a couple of spots, or at the very least give us a decent chance of jumping somebody in the lottery (even though that has never, ever happened). I just hate Al got hurt, it would have been way more interesting to see if healthy Al could have gotten us a win or two.
I wanted them to tank originally, but I've been happy with how they've played and -- if given the chance -- I probably wouldn't go back and change things. At the same time, I'm not a fan of huge blow-up-the-team rebuilds as it is, because I think you can rebuild on the fly. We were arguably one of the worst teams of all-time during a couple of those hardcore rebuilding seasons, and it still didn't get us anything. I'd much rather take the old Hornets approach to things and build a consistently good team, even if it's not necessarily a championship contender year in and year out. Build a team that can consistently make the playoffs and then keep looking for constant opportunities to tweak things and continue to get better.
Even though the team we currently have probably isn't as good as most would have liked given the abyss this organization went through for a few years in order to rebuild, I think it's constructed well enough now that we should be able to make continual adjustments and keep getting better. We have some cap room, we have some future draft picks, we have a decent age spread -- not too old, not too young -- we just have to build on that.
