Can someone explain to me why we helped out the Heat?

Got home from work at 8pm, had the draft dvr'd, wife and kids were at VBS, Udis gluten free pepperoni pizza fresh out of the oven, and I'm just chillin' on the couch, like a little kid on Christmas morn. Fast forward to our 2nd round first round pick and Silver announces "Shabazz Napier" and I literally did a fist pump; excellent young back up pg and then they immediately cut to the reporter and he says that Shabazz' agent was telling the family that he's being traded to Miami and I immediately yelled out "Why?" Why help out a team that is in our division and is one of the best teams in the league? Especially when it was a position of need?

Someone please help me understand this because right now, I just see Cho as a patsy.

the hornets got the guy they wanted all along 2 picks later, and extracted 2 2nd round picks in the process. one of the picks was used to carve a little more cap space (how it will be used is important) and the other will come in 2019 from a team with an uncertain future. so, to answer your question, the bob---the hornets helped out the heat because they were also helping themselves in the process. if you think about houston and their cap situation and free agent plan, they were never going to take napier. they wanted a foreign player they could stash overseas if needed. so if you want, think of it as the hornets basically holding napier hostage and getting a couple more assets as ransom. just a small little trade that adds a little bit in the asset ledger for now and the future.

Eh, shortsighted, imho. All of that could have been done without aiding Miami. Plus Napier was a position of need, he and Hairston were equal.

We didnt help the heat they were 2 picks later and were going to get shabazz regardless. Cho drafted shabazz and held him hostage and got a extra second round pick and the same guy we were planning on drafting at 24 anyways. Theres a reason hes a GM and were not.

Since when we PG a position of need for the hornets? You don't draft a backup pg at 24 after Henderson's god awful season, its clear that #24 was going to be a SG.

This came about because Vonleh fell to us at 9.
If he hadn't we would have drafted our shooter in McDermott. Then at 24 we could have kept Napier.
That would have given us a proven shooter at wing who is a high character guy plus a backup PG with championship pedigree while hurting MIA.
Instead, by taking Vonleh, we had to take Hairston.

A. Who's our backup pg? How is that not a position of need?
B. By all accounts lance is priority #1 in FA. Lance is a sg.
People bend over for Miami and then say, "Thank you sir, may I have another".

ESPN saying Heat won the draft by trading up to get the guy who was going to be available to them anyway. They lost the trade but won the draft.
Then Tim Legler says Napier reminds him of Marbury.
I almost wish we would've kept him if only so I don't have to hear all this stupid **** the media (and dumbass fans) are going to be spewing for the next few months

He wasn't our guy anyway, if we couldn't have moved back to get PJ we just would've taken him 24, If anything Miami helped us, saved us money on the pick, gave us more money and a 2nd rounder
And Houston is in money saving mode so they wouldn't have taken Shabazz at 25 so MIA really did that trade for no reason

Im not willing to use a 23 overall pick for a backup pg we can get sessions or d league guy or something. We needed to adress shooting last night. I do agree we need to target Lance but its not guarenteed he will come so we had to take a Sg

We didn't help the Heat. We helped ourselves out, by making Hairston's rookie scale cheaper by almost $75K, and acquiring a 2nd rounder from Miami. We didn't really want Napier, we wanted Hairston, and Miami was willing to give us assets to prevent Houston from drafting Napier as leverage on LeBron

As little as people think of Cho around here, I don't think LeBron has the inside track on him when it comes to player assessment. I like Napier, but I'm pretty really to trust that this was ultimately a good decision.

Exactly how I see it. Heat were going to get him anyway, so we still got our guy and got something from the Heat too.

We worked out Hairston 2x and vetted him to heavens. He was our guy all along. We got him cheaper and we added cash and a future 2nd rounder for the 2019 Heat (Lebron will be 35, Wade will be retired).
We didn't have the minutes for Shabazz.
The Heat offer for Shabazz was likely higher than any other offer.
We weren't getting Tim Hardaway Jr. from the Knicks which was my wet dream.
Shabazz is an upgrade over Chalmers. I wish him well as a starter but I obviously want the Heat to lose with every fiber of my being.
I attended the draft party and a newsreporter snapped several photos of me with my arms raised, screaming and celebrating like a mad man. I hope I don't show up in the Charlotte Observer with a caption that reads - "Fans react to Shabazz Napier selection". I was totally duped and caught on film like a fool.
But I felt immediately thereafter at peace with the Hairston pick knowing we have the minutes for him and I hate Hendo and we didn't get a shooter with pick 9.
Fans there celebrated Vonleh. McDermott was labeled big bust potential by all the fans in my area.

We didnt' help Miami, if we didn't draft Napier he would have fallen to them anyway. We basically forced them to pay more to get their guy. It was a shrewd move by our front office.
We didn't want Napier, he's a clone of Kemba. We will find a better fitting backup point guard in free agency, someone with experience and better size than Kemba/Napier.

The Sixers similarly really screwed the Magic by taking their guy at 10 when they already had MCW. They extorted a 1st round pick I think and other goodies.
Look at it this way. We were the lone team blocking access to Napier and in a position to hold him ransom.
And we did!!!

Because they helped us.

Actually by helping the Heat we helped ourself more..
We got PJ Hairston who we wanted at 2 guard anyway by trading down to 26. we picked up an extra 2014 pick in Christon who we traded for cash to OKC and a future2nd round pick in 2019 when JBJ,DWade, Bosh will be gone.
Hairston maybe our starting 2 next season unless they pay big bucks for Stephenson which they won't.
I think now in Free Agency you will see them go after a veteran 3 to start. I BEEleive they may make a run at Parsons, but if that falls through then they will target Deng
With the cash considerations from the 45 and 55 picks being traded along with Haywoods contract being traded to Cleveland, they will sign a veteran point to backup Kemba..Mo Williams or Jared Jack ?
More trades should follow that move Biz and Hendo possibly S/T for Hawes from Cleveland or Frye from Phx
As for the Heat,I would give up Napier all day long for all the cap space we are saving and PJHairston

We have one PG on our roster. We have the minutes for Shabazz, the FO just liked Hairston more. Nothing wrong with that.
You stayed all the way to the 24th pick? What time did you leave? You must've been pretty much the only one there. I'm surprised even the reporters stuck around.
I stayed through pick 15 to see if we were trading Vonleh, then figured we wouldn't and then left. I would say 85-90% of the people had left by that point.

We wanted PJ, they wanted Napier. Napier was still on the board, Charlotte took him to pick up picks and get the guy they wanted.
