The Gordon Hayward Thread

Post#1 » by BlackOutBuzz » Fri Jul 4, 2014 8:31 pm

Figured we should have an independent thread for him, given the meeting this week.

Offer 9-10 million per year. If Utah matches, then goodbye and good luck.

He will get an offer around 13-14 million, maybe even more.

I like him. But this guys about to get grossly overpaid. He'll have a Torkoglu contract in two years time. No thanks unless its less than 10mil

I'm happy to offer him any contact I'd offer Lance. All the Phoenix and Cleveland max talk made me assume we weren't going to get involved. Not thrilled about a potential max from us.

Id rather give Hayward 14 a year than give Stephenson 11-12 a year. Way less risk involved.

He's not worth over $10M. There is a whole other side of the ball that he's not good at. Lance at 11-12 is possibly not even an overpay if his game translates. There is a risk sure, but maybe keep the contract short and see what happens. If not then pass on both and move on.

then we end up with a SG who shoots 40% instead of 50% and half of the potential

WTF. I don't want Hayward. I want Stephenson's crazy ass.

I don't believe anybody has offered max money for him. Phoenix and Cleveland want LeBron, that is just media with inaccurate reports. Less than 10, or take a hike

He's a RFA. He's not going to be available at $10M per.

I also don't get the love fest for Hayward. The guy is good, not great, is not a.quality defender, and his ceiling as a player is pretty set. Any deal is likely matched or requires a S&T which would cost us assets and an overpaid salary.

If this is a reaction to Big Al wanting his buddy here, it is a bad move. I love Al, but his posse will no more win us a championship here than in Utah.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Okay, let's put Hayward into perspective here. Each year he has played in the NBA, his shooting % has gone down. Hornets fans complain about Henderson, but Hayward is at best a slight upgrade over him. I want a real improvement like Lance, or just keep Henderson.

Henderson this past year shot better from the field, better from 3-pt range, plays much better defense, and is more athletic than Hayward. Hayward was his teams top option, yet only scored 2 more points per game than Hendo.

We are paying Hendo 6 million, so anything over 9-10 million for Hayward would completely stupid

Media report saying they are preparing a max offer, proves nothing. Media is wrong all of the time, and until it really happens, I want believe it. Any team that offers him max money better hope Utah saves them by matching. Way overhyped

I completely endorse signing Hayward.

I've seen this guy play and he's a lot better than most realgm posters give him credit for.

The Jazz were terrible last year, even if they were in the east, they still would have been terrible. He was a HUGE reason why they didn't get blown out like every game.

He isn't bad at anything. Either average or better, depending on how limited he is.

What I can tell you from what I've seen:

-good lane-driver
-decent shooter
-high basketball IQ type of player
-can create offense
-can create his own shot
-exceptional passer
-plays VERY WELL off the ball

I've heard differing opinions on here from jazz fans about his defense.

To me he seemed like an average-good defender, but some disagree and say he's terrible at defense. (Kind of like Al was, I guess), and on the other hand, some say he is a very smart defender.

The thing I like best about him though?

He's a good guy. Great locker room presence. No character issues or coachability issues

Gordon vs Lance

Passing-Gordon
Shooting-Gordon
Defense-Lance
Rebounding-Lance
Mental-Gordon

and Gordon is a Cho guy

I would say Gordon is the better fit for this team especially if he plays SG and we keep MKG (which we better)

One of the most common-used terms being thrown around this time of year is that of "max" contract, it is also one of the most ambiguous. Given our confirmed interest in Hayward I thought I'd try my hand at just what his "max" is. (NOTE: This is based on the projected $63.2 million cap, which is yet to be confirmed.)

2014-15: $14.8m
2015-16: $15.47m
2016-17: $16.13m
2017-18: $16.8m
