College Basketball Thread

Post#1 » by MasterIchiro » Fri Oct 24, 2014 8:38 pm

I'd like to have a thread where we can post about different college teams and not so much on the draft process understanding it's still way too early for that. I figure most of us root for UNC, Duke, other NC teams and UConn for obvious reasons.

For selfish reasons I'd like a thread I can discuss UConn with the many new Hornets fans who came here to follow Kemba. Anyways, here's my starter article…

A veteran NBA scout who recently visited UConn’s practice told SNY.tv that the Huskies are “better than you think” and are loaded with NBA prospects.

“I was shocked at how good they were,” the scout said. “I never expected them to be like this.”

The reigning NCAA champions lost several key players, including star point guard Shabazz Napier and athletic forward DeAndre Daniels, but the scout counts Amida Brimah, Daniel Hamilton and Ryan Boatright as potential future pros.

The scout also counted Sam Cassell Jr., Rodney Purvis, Omar Calhoun and Phillip Nolan as prospects to watch.

Here’s the scout’s breakdown of a few guys:

Amida Brimah, 7-0, So., C: “Brimah has improved 100 percent, maybe 150 percent, from last year. He’s blocking shots, runs the floor. Sensational dunker. Has a beautiful shooting stroke, beautiful form which is very surprising.”

Daniel Hamilton, 6-7, Fr, G/F: “He’ll be one of the better young players in the country. Really shoots the ball well. Good handle. Floaters, runners, pull-up jump shots, shoots the 3. He’ll be one of the best freshman in that league without a doubt, one of the best freshman in the country.”

Ryan Boatright, 6-0, Sr., G: “For two-thirds of the season, he could not play against [Napier], but Kevin [Ollie] did a great job with him to convince him to play with him and not against him. He’s a two-way player. He’s a tremendous on-the-ball defender, as Kentucky’s guards found out last year. He’s the point guard, penetrates and dishes and kicks for 3’s. He’s bought into the program.”

UNC's latest ordeal with their academics is embarrassing for them. Im embarrassed for them. Its pathetic. Hope they take away their 05 and 09 titles.

@ 'MasterIchiro', I'm not getting my hopes up about this year's UConn team even though they're loaded with a lot of depth this go-around. I've learned in the past that higher the expectations I have in the offseason the more lackluster the results, and the seasons that I've went into it optimistic yet indifferent about our championship contentions that I've found reasons to believe in our aspirations as the season went along

Well expectations are kind of neutral it seems - We're gonna be ranked somewhere around 15 at the start. So this article definitely made me raise my eyebrow.

On the recruiting end, Diamond Stone schedule UConn as his last visit. Kevin Ollie is attracting NBA legacies (Cassell Jr. and Hamilton). The dude is bonafide. The program is thoroughly elite. I'm not going to contain myself!!! My brother graduated UConn and he was a huge Brimah fan before the Tourney. I had my doubts but we'll see. His words "Don't sleep on Brimah". Supposedly he's a very good kid as well and a vocal leader on the court. I love this group.

Neutral expectations are better than high expectations if you ask me. Our team don't need any added pressure on top of being the defending champs

Like your brother, I'm a huge Brimah fan as well. He'll likely be the guy who's name I'll be yelling at the TV the most when he go up for blocks defensively and make post moves offensively. Brimah remind me of Hasheem Thabeet's early years, but he's a lot more fluid and understanding of the game

I'm also excited about the prospects of Daniel Hamilton (NBA player Jordan Hamilton's little brother). I think Hamilton will be the next high level NBA prospect wings out of UConn in the same vein as Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, Caron Butler, and Rudy Gay before him

Well that's never gonna happen (other than in your blue deviled wet dreams) but I wonder what will. UConn's low GPA got them a ban but "you see what happens when you ban us?" This UNC thing sounds far more egregious.

Duke FINALLY, FINALLY has a legit post presence. Thats why I truly think we will win the national title this year. Him and Amile Jefferson will be a dynamic duo down low.

Sam Cassell Jr. be major contributor for UConn: Cassell, a 6-foot-4 guard, initially committed to Maryland out of high school -- so the Terrapins' loss will be the Huskies' gain. Cassell wasn't eligible academically when he first arrived in College Park and instead spent last season at Chipola College where he averaged 18.4 points and 3.7 assists as a first-team JUCO All-American. Like his father, Cassell reads defenses well and knows where to pick his spots offensively.

Coach Kevin Ollie is going to need a fearless scorer to emerge following Shabazz Napier's departure and don't be surprised if Cassell winds up stepping into that role. Poised, confident and under control, Cassell knows how to use his body to get off shots and is also creative around the rim. Ryan Boatright is the household name in the Huskies' back court and Rodney Purvis and Daniel Hamilton are supposed to be the impact newcomers, but don't be surprised if Cassell is the guy with the ball in his hands when the shot clock is winding down.

Also UConn is trying to win #1 ranked recruit in the 2015 class, center prospect Diamond Stone out of Milwaukee, WI. His hometown Wisconsin Badgers are the other team in the running but UConn is thought to be the favorite.

I'm also hearing UConn's bench might be 5 star transfer Rodney Purvis, highly touted freshman scorer Daniel Hamilton, brother of the NBA's Jordan Hamilton and returning sophomore spark plug guard Terrence Samuel.

UConn's bench could be very explosive.

If center Amida Brimah can stay out of foul trouble and anchor the defense on the second unit, the Huskies are going to wear out opponents with their depth and we all know Ollie will have the whole roster well-conditioned for the grind and gruel of the long season.

UConn's experience rivals last year's team that lost senior leadership Shabazz Napier and Neils Giffey along with junior sidekick DeAndre Daniels. The team is lead by senior PG Ryan Boatright who recently commented potential guard partner Cassell Jr. is "older than me" which is true. Cassell Jr's preparation and maturity is reflected in how he handles in-game situations with poise. Junior Omar Calhoun is expected to challenge for starter minutes when he returns from an injury. Brimah, Purvis, Samuel as we know are sophomore's leaving the only freshman likely to play big minutes as the ultra talented versatile scorer Daniel Hamilton - an NBA legacy himself.

I just can't get excited about college basketball like I used to. Will probably watch most if not all Duke games, but I'm not as consumed by Duke basketball as I was back in the day.

(CNN) -- A former University of North Carolina football player has become the first to sue the university over an 18-year academic scandal that kept athletes eligible to play sports by taking classes that never met.

Mike McAdoo was a football player who lost his eligibility in 2011 when he was accused of getting too much help with a paper, and was one of the first athletes revealed to have taken part in "paper classes," for which the only requirement was completing a single paper.

Now he's suing the university in federal court, saying UNC broke its promise to give him an education in return for playing sports. His lawsuit is a class-action suit that the other 3,100 students who enrolled in the fake classes -- nearly half of whom are athletes -- could easily join.

"From selection of a major to selection of courses, the UNC football program controlled football student-athletes' academic track, with the sole purpose of ensuring that football student-athletes were eligible to participate in athletics, rather than actually educating them," says his lawsuit, filed Thursday by the law firms of Ferguson, Chambers & Sumter in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mehri and Skalet in Washington, D.C.

I wonder if McCants or any UNC Tarheel basketball player will follow suit.

That is going to get ugly. UNC can't get that **** to go away, that's what you get when you flaunt your supposed moral superiority while concealing the most blatant schemes of academic fraud in NCAA history.
