The "Please, No First Rounders for Veterans" Trade Deadline Thread

With the trade dead-line approaching and us bound to be mentioned among teams that are looking for some veteran help, I suppose this topic will be useful for all of the rumors and the discussion following them.

The blogger who had the first scoop on Kemba's surgery is reporting that:

[tweet]https://twitter.com/QCHspencer/status/567368329611190272[/tweet]

Meanwhile, Zach Lowe has mentioned in his latest column that..:

Trading [David] West could accelerate a mini-rebuild, but West’s $12.6 million player option for next season is an unpleasant pill. Corey Brewer quietly declined his own player option to grease his trade to Houston, but West’s option is much bigger, and he can’t afford to close off any paths to money as he approaches 35. It’s unclear whether any team — Toronto, Charlotte, or someone else — is primed to surrender a first-round pick for West. If the Pacers can’t find a hungry taker, they might stay the course and settle for a smaller move.

I suppose the key word is "unclear". Can go either way according to him.

In other, not that trade deadline-related news, Lowe also acknowledged the Utah-Cho pipeline.

Finding a workable deal for Kanter is tough. Boston already has stretchy bigs who struggle with rim protection. The Kings don’t need another ball-dominant post guy next to Boogie. Kanter doesn’t fit Indy’s defense-first culture, and while Portland needs healthy bigs, it’d be reluctant to jeopardize its chemistry. The ever-active Hornets could view Kanter as an heir apparent to Al Jefferson, but they’re in a playoff chase, and Utah would throw the phone on the floor at the mere mention of Lance Stephenson.

I suppose that David West can be our first topic of discussion. Doesn't seem likely that anyone on this board would approve of a first-rounder being shipped away for West.

Besides giving up a pick, the obvious reasoning would be that:

- We would rob Cody (and in essence Biz as well) of valuable playoff experience (assuming we finish as the 7th or 8th seed) as he has entered a bigger role.

- West would hardly move the needle. He's a stout and nasty defender, yet Cody is doing his part on that end and for all we know inserting West could take away some of our mobility and create a front-line that is too slow.

The only real pro that I see is:

- West can easily step in Cody's role and make those long twos to at least stretch the floor to some degree. Cody's been better at them, yet still doesn't scare defenses with that J. But then again we enter a discussion of asking whether David West's mid-range and pick-n-roll game is really worth a first-rounder when we're unlikely to become that better as a team with him on the roster anyway.

Ew, both of those scenarios disgust me. Cho has time and time again made it seem like he would not give up future assets in a deal for someone like David West. Still, it scares me that we are being linked to it in the media. Luckily, all these deals we've been linked to in the past that we all hated never happened and it turned out there was nothing really too them. Hopefully this is just pure speculation by the media.

I haven't been able to figure out any reason why we would want Kanter. He he always seemed like kind like Al but with mediocre offense to me. He has all the same flaws as Al and with weaker strengths. I'd take Biz or Al over him any day of the week. He doesn't seem like he could play PF at all either so I really just don't see the point of making a move for him. If Jefferson opts out and we don't resign him I guess he would solidify our center rotation for next year, but again, he would be our backup behind Biz in my opinion unless Clifford really does just not like Biz for some reason.

the bad part is that we rarely are rumored about in the media. our front office has been somewhat leak-free and when the media latches onto something, it has almost always been a real trade possibility.

there is at least some hope with Kanter that he could develop defensively because of his foot speed. but, yeah, not high on him either. the people behind him scare me. they declared him a top3 player in his position or something and are deluded about Kanter's worth.

I can't really think of any single player that I would give up a lottery protected 1st for that we'd have any chance of getting without adding another valuable asset. I would have for Jeff Green but that ship has sailed. I would for Ryan Anderson but that seems too unlikely to count. I might give up said pick for two solid vets if at least one was an upgrade over either Hendo or Cody and the other was an upgrade over any of the various scrubs on our bench. Maybe Affllo/Chandler or Mayo/Illyasova?

Giving up a first for David West makes me nauseous

And there is the unstated Lance in this deal too.

Given Lance to Indiana for David West ... and assuming that Cho was 100% going to do that trade ... would you rather add a protected pick or Cody Zeller to make things work? Honestly IDK, myself. I'm not really adverse to trading a pick for the right deal. Just not sure that this is it.

Would anyone consider giving up a lottery protected first for any of these packages?

Marvin Williams + Gerald Henderson for OJ Mayo + Ersan Ilyasova
Marvin Williams + Gerald Henderson + Jeff Taylor (or Brian Roberts) for OJ Mayo + Ersan Ilyasova + John Henson
Marvin WIlliams + Gerald Henderson for Arron Afflalo + WIlson Chandler

I think I actually would for the second Milaukee deal. I might for the first. I don't know about the Denver package.

Also this sort of deal might make more sense if there is a trade in the works, like the rumored one with the Kings, where the Hornets are getting back a young player. Net effect would be trading next year's pick and getting the prospect half a season early.

No on the first.
Maybe on the second.
Definitely not on the third.

Not too interested in David West. In fact I'm not interested at all. But he is better than Zeller and Marv so there's that. I would trade Zeller just for clearing logjam purposes before I'd trade a 1st rounder unless it's one of those heavily protected ones that most likely evaporate into a 2nd rounder.

a trade like this would make my day:

(it would work if troy daniels could be done in a seperate deal)

I agree. If they think Al is a star then Al and Taylor for V, Ross and Fields.
