met him a couple of times at the hive in the 90s. he was always very nice to my awkward teenaged ass, even though he cut a very hard profile he was very gracious and down to earth. he was one of my favorites.

I just knew I could find a great Mason game in the LamarMatic Youtube archives.

31 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists as a Hornet

definitely one of the cool players of the 90s.

1) had facial designs in his hair;
2) a point forward. how can you not love them!? (despite the fact that he clashed with George Karl about this in Milwaukee when he was already past his prime and not capable of doing this)
3) a guy who didn't make it the easy way. found himself a place in the league through hard work, competing his ass off and paying his dues in the CBA;
4) had cameos in more than one hip hop video. I think that he appeared in two Beastie Boys videos.

a bit embarassed by the video Fats posted. 16:58? I probably used way toooo long cuts like I did back in the day. ashamed to watch it and find out if that really is the case. I hope it's watchable.

overall, I'd say that his legacy kind of is the fact that he was both a bruiser and a skilled point forward. those two usually don't go hand in hand.

YouTube legend TheKingMisiek also deserves a shout out for putting together this fine mix of Mason.

The Charlotte Hornets released the following statements on the passing of Anthony Mason.

Hornets Chairman Michael Jordan:

"I’m deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Anthony Mason. Mase was one of the toughest competitors of his era. While on the Hornets, he was beloved by fans throughout the Carolinas for his hard-nosed play and skill on the court. The Hornets organization extends its condolences to his entire family.”

Hornets Associate Head Coach Patrick Ewing:

“My heart is heavy after learning we lost Anthony Mason last night. We were teammates on the Knicks for five great seasons. Mase came to play every night and was always ready to go to battle with me every time we stepped on the court together. I will remember him for his strength, determination and perseverance. My thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace.”

Mason always won the "player I would hate to face" award.

The dude was down right intimidating.
