Playing Kemba and Mo together

Clifford said he is going to do it...

Point guard Mo Williams has been such a sensation in his first five games with the Charlotte Hornets that coach Steve Clifford is already planning how to use him in collaboration with Kemba Walker.

“We’re going to play them together,” Clifford said Monday at practice. “We need to get (Walker) back as soon as we can, and then we’ll make an adjustment on the fly to play those guys together.”

“He’s a pro player. He’s picked things up quickly,” Clifford said of Williams’ immediate impact. “He’s a good organizer and a good pick-and-roll player. He’s been through the wars, so there is nothing he hasn’t seen.”

Walker has begun running and jumping in practice but hasn’t been cleared for contact. He has an appointment Wednesday with the specialist who repaired his torn meniscus in New York when the Hornets play the Brooklyn Nets.

Williams, in his 12th NBA season, says it would be nothing new to him to be paired with another point guard.

“I’ve played that way in my career and had a lot of success with it, whether it be me and Chris (Paul) in L.A. or Eric Bledsoe,” Williams said. “And in my younger days with T.J. Ford.”

Williams isn’t giving much thought to pairing with Walker just yet. The Hornets have at least nine games to play before Walker’s return.

“Let’s cross that bridge when we get to it,” Williams said. “We’ve got some games to continue to win to stay in this (playoff) hunt before he gets back.”

Going to be an interesting dynamic, how do you think it'll work? Is Cliff crazy enough to start them both? Will Rob be benched forever?

Was a given they would play together. Roberts is going to be glued to the bench.

They're easily our best two offensive players, and Mo's three-point shooting is exactly what we've been lacking at the 2 for years now. I'm not sure we've had a legit sharpshooter at the 2 since J-Rich. Mo's minute count shouldn't see much of a hit at all once Kemba returns. Hopefully Roberts is cut out completely

I'm just a little concerned about Cliff force playing them together even when the matchup isn't in our favor. Like if we're playing against Wade and the Heat in a game that'll decide if we make the playoffs or not. Wade is a big guard so he would make either of them his bitch in the paint and on the boards. Or even against the Nets with Joe Johnson in the 4th in a critical game.

Dangit leave it to Cliff to torpedo the melodrama on this board.

I'm just afraid Cliff will use a Kemba-Mo-Hendo-Marv-Al lineup late in the fourth when we need defensive stops. Kemba and Mo should be fun to watch playing together though.

I think and hope they use him as a better version of Sessions, who they used with Kemba quite a bit.

Mo should start on the bench but still play big minutes and probably close

Swap out Hendo and Al for MKG and Biz/Cody! But yeah, I assume Cliff will find a way to screw this up.

This will absolutely happen. It makes no sense now talking about it, and it will make less sense in real-time, especially when MKG and Zeller are having decent games.

I don't like the idea of playing them together for anything other than extremely short moments in time.

The defensive concerns are there and are real, but we've been starving for a good offense for so long that this idea is just too damn refreshing. It would be fun if they found their groove and one of them could run a PnR on one side of the court then swing it, the other uses the opening and so on.

If going small with KembaMo means less Lance, then I am all for playing them together for all of Lance's minutes.

8-man rotation for the stretch run, lets do this ****

PG: Kemba 36, Mo 12
SG: Hendo 30, Mo 18
SF: MKG 36, Hendo 6, Marvin 6
PF: Zeller 32, Marvin 16
C: Jefferson 28, Biz 20

If we play them together I would prefer it be with Biz and MKG. Give them the best help they can get on the defensive end.

First and foremost, I hate small ball, and I hate the analytics group who've taken over the style of play in the league. Games aren't better now, the quality of play is worse, these pro teams play more like a playground games where you just chuck jumper after jumper with a lot of picks used mostly to create more long range shots....

Now as for playing Mo and Kemba together...Mo just got torched by a 5'7 backup guard so badly we had to play a zone to try and stop the guy, but now we're gonna have him defend SG's? Kemba is a solid team defender cause he plays the passing lanes well and he can sometimes cheat off his man and catch a unsuspecting big sleepin for a steal, but by no means is he a solid on ball defender. Playing these two together may get us some scoring, but we're gonna sacrifice defense to submit to Cliff's already exposed style of play, something dang near all of us have complained about all season? I'm not with it. These guys aren't elite enough scorers to compensate the scoring they'll give up. Maybe a few minutes stretch they could possibly be effective, but with Cliff not knowing when enough is enough we'll just give up whatever we may get. Count me out.

i was thinking the same thing, cut it back to 8 players.

I just don't see it happening

We need to think about minutes to be fresh heading into the playoffs. Also with Lance working hard and not being a distraction I think he still gets some minutes. The fact that they are reporting the exact opposite of him being a problem tells me they will try to see if he can fight his way through this massive slump and get back to his last year form. If he fights out of it and gets him numbers back to last years to go with his improving defense our bench will be much stronger.

I think a lineup of Kemba/Mo/MKG/Cody and either Al or Biz depending on the situation would be an intriguing one. We've got our best offensive and best defensive/hustle players on the floor at the same time.
