I've liked this kid all year, nothing has changed now!!

I like him as well.

This kid is going to be a good player in this league..he has whatever "It" is

I don't know how I feel about Grant. It'll be really interesting to see how the PGs from this class compare in 5 years.

If we trade back Grant is who I want us to draft. He has size, a well rounded skillset, and he really takes care of the ball. He is going to be a good player in this league.

The more I think about it the more I think that, short of someone like Russell, Towns or Okafor taking a miraculous tumble on draft night and falling to #9, I would take Grant at #9. I'd take him over guys like Hezonja, Oubre, Cauley-Stein, Porzingis etc.

I know it's a little higher than where mocks currently have him but I don't care. I'm sick of projects. I want a guy like Grant who not only could come in and contribute from day #1 but he also still has a lot of room to grow and continue to improve AND he plays a position of need for us AND has a skill set that we crave.

Agreed. If we land in the range we're most likely to and nothing unexpected happens up to that point in terms of selection I want Jerian. I might be able to be sold on Hezonja due to his size and scoring ability (his defense apparently isn't there, which wouldn't be as worrisome if it weren't for his supposed attitude issues), but nothing that Oubre, WCS, and Porzingis offer are things we couldn't get with 2nd round pick. A semi-athletic swingman who can't create his own shot or a project Euro big are a dime a dozen in the 2nd round or the D-league. I'd be more okay with WCS than the other two but even an incredibly offensively limited big who lacks strength and length but kills it on defense is something fairly easy to find (and we already have Biz).

Grant, unlike his peers, has things that set him apart. Not only does he have true PG skills, looking first to set up his teammates before (very capably) looking to score, but he also has great size for his position. He's the type of player that I want paired with Kemba, to allow him to play off the ball at times on offense and not give up too much size defensively. Being able to have both guards orchestrate an offense like John Wall and Brad Beal do in Washington is huge. Having a legitimate combo guard is what we hoped the Lance acquisition would do for us. Barring a breakout season from him next year he's out of Charlotte and Grant would provide us with a possible replacement and someone who could help us move Hendo.

He reminds me of Oladipo in this workout.

it helps he kinda looks like Oladipo but i think he is going to be a better player than Oladipo but less athletic

I like Grant as a player. Love his size as a PG. In fact, I would love to have him as the starting PG instead of Kemba. He could have immediate impact on the court, ala Jordan Clarkson in LA. I just don't love his fit next to Kemba. Both players need to have the ball in their hands a lot. Would be higher on CHA picking Grant if the team hadn't already bought into Kemba long term. As I said in the RJ Hunter thread, I'd rather draft a SG who can playmake rather than a PG who can shoot.

Not wanting to sound like a douche, but doesn't a SG who can playmake need the ball in his hands just as much as a PG who can shoot?

I mean, they both need the ball to be effective - but that goes for everyone unless you are a Tony Allen type defensive specialist.

Again, agreed. The "needs the ball in his hands" thing, to me, is a construct born from the observation that said player either had or has had to have the ball in their hands. If that statement is true for Grant then by that same logic I think it doubly true for Hunter who arguably had to do more for his team. I don't think that analysis is apt for either, but it's worth pointing out the extension of that train of thought I think.

As for the PG vs. SG thing, for me it becomes a question of a zebra being black with white stripes or white with black stripes. The difference is irrelevant, as it's the product of a imposing positions on players. It then becomes of a simple question of who is better at what, and how we weigh that as a franchise/fanbase. Admittedly I need to watch more of Hunter because he's intriguing, but for me Grant is the player I'm wanting most.

I got lazy and threw in a cliche and you caught me! I guess I think of it in terms of initiating the offense. The PG often brings the ball up and initiates the offense, and plays a lot from the top of the key. A guy like Hunter is starting on the wing, running off screens, curls, and looking first for their own shot, but whereas some SG like PJ Hairston shoot all the time, some like Hunter have high bbiq and good vision and can drop dimes to the PF/C or drive and kick to others. That's what I think of when I think of a SG making a play. the PG's bringing the ball up, getting the team into its sets, penetrating, doing drive and kicks, that kind of thing, more of a facilitator mindset, like the QB in football. Obviously if Cliff lines Grant up at SG next to Kemba, then he's gonna run around more like a SG but he has less experience playing that position. I might add I'm with you if you think we should just have both the PG and SG be 6'5+ and call them combo guards and not nitpick, but I think I'm reacting to Kemba and Mo not playing well together. People talk about needing a combo guard next to Kemba so he can play "off the ball" at times, but Kemba seemed so much less effective when Cliff teamed him with another PG in Mo.

Naaaaaw, didn't catch you! What you shared here makes sense - and I get what you are saying.

I'd actually like to play Grant as our starting SG but have the ball in his hands. A lot. I think he'd be better at initiating our offence and would get Kemba, MKG and Cody/Noah better looks while also being able to create his own offence and score when needed as well.

I see him as an excellent fit for us.

Notre Dame point guard Jerian Grant tells Hoops Rumors (Twitter link) that he’ll be working out for the Hornets on June 8th. That audition will mark just the second team workout for Grant, who previously worked out for the Pacers.
