ESPN NBA Rank 2015

Post#1 » by fatlever » Mon Sep 28, 2015 4:54 pm

#332 PJ Hairston (last year #320)
#320 Brian Roberts (last year #332)
#310 Troy Daniels (last year #357)
#302 Tyler Hansbrough (last year #252)
#300 Jeremy Lamb (last year #213) OUCH!
#272 Spencer Hawes (last year #129) Double OUCH!
#257 Bismack Biyombo (last year #298) Looks like Biz got the "anti Hornets bump"
#230 Gary Neal (last year #267) LOL, the anti Hornets bias is confirmed. Neal has worst year ever, leaves Hornets and gets ranked higher.
#224 Marvin Williams (last year #212)
#213 Mo Williams (last year #198)
#197 Jeremy Lin (last year #100) Get used to it Lin fans, perception of Hornets players by media is terrible.
#194 Noah Vonleh (last year #250)
#188 Frank Kaminsky
#176 Gerald Henderson (last year #172)
#151 Cody Zeller (last year #203)
#149 Lance Stevenson (last year #50)
#79 Kemba Walker (last year #61)
#77 Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (last year #131)
#71 Nic Batum (last year #52)
#50 Al Jefferson (last year #22)

Every year we have done this the result is the same, players who recently come to Hornets see their rankings tumble, even if performance has been steady. Players who leave Hornets see a rankings bump.

The Hornets bump/anti-Hornets bump is REAL this year. I'm braced to see Lance rank ahead of Kemba or some bullscheiße

#194 Noah Vonleh (last year 250). Vonleh, sits on the bench all year, is widely proclaimed a bust by everyone. Then gets traded to Portland, has a few good summer league games and now his ranking jumps 50+ spots from last year. LOL. Ridiculous.

For what it's worth, and I admit to being higher on Vonleh than most from the start, I actually think his bump is probably the least egregious of all the bumps/falls thus far. At least with Vonleh you can make a case he was super raw at 19yrs old, showed some nice things at the end of last year, more flashes of promise in summer league and would probably be expected to improve year-over-year regardless just due to experience being his biggest weakness.

The anti-Hornets slant is real though, if Vonleh was with us he'd be ranked much lower without a doubt. Putting him in the same range as Frank (NBA-ready rookie at roughly the same position) is probably accurate, but no way he gets that rating had he stayed on board.

Lance should be ranked dead last followed by Gary Neal. No idea how Brian frickin' Roberts improved his standing, I mean he's still exactly what he was, a decent 3rd-string PG who you don't want to give 15+mpg under any circumstance that doesn't include injuries. I'm also shocked Zeller's arrow pointed up, ESPN's TV personalities regularly cite him as one of the biggest busts of the last few drafts. Obviously they're morons, but it's a nice surprise that these ranking are at least ever so slightly less dumb than Skip Bayless or one of Broussard's multiple sauces.

I think people saw Zellers DRPM and bumped him from that. I think Zeller is a good defender but he was top 5-10 for the longest time last season. This had more to do with Marvin being his backup than Zeller being a top 10 defender.

What do you guys think about Kelly Olynyk at 122 vs. Cody Zeller at 151?

Not just media bias, but the same bias when it comes to contract offerings from FO's as well. Offense gets you paid better than defense, usually.

No big complaints. They're both pretty much where I expected. Kemba will be top 50 next season though. i think he's about to have a massive year.

This times a million. Boston has a disproportionate presence in sports media. That provincial bias seeps into the evaluation of all the players on the Celtics/Pats/Sox/Bruins. You can't talk crap about Olynyk on ESPN because at least one Boston homer is on set at any given time to provide a counterpoint in his favor.

I am 100% certain that if Olynyk were on our team the slant would be "LOL. Gonzaga white guy, no defense, 12th man on a good team at best." and the Zeller narrative would be "Sooooo underrated. Does all the little things, throws his body around. Did you know played with a broken nose without a mask because the medical staff couldn't get one in time?!? What a warrior! That's Celtic Pride personified. This guy gets it. How could you not love this kid?"

Whatevs though, I hope we get Zeller on a below-market deal just like MKG. Never going to be a star but definitely a solid starter.

Well, that's what I meant by "media bias".

I'm kind of surprised Kemba wasn't lower. He was sooo bad last season.
