Lamar's Game 1 BreakdownThe Charlotte Hornets started their first round series against the Miami Heat continuing to use a reasonable amount of aggressive coverage of the pick-n-roll. Only the Heat were ready for that and blew the Hornets defense out of the water.
When looking back at Cody Zeller's season performance and previewing his role in the playoffs, I noted that his pick-and-roll defense will play a huge role in the playoffs due to the amount of times coach Steve Clifford has Zeller coming up to the level of the screen, if not blitzing it altogether.
As then noted, a coaching chess match of using these traps to their team's advantage seemed like a decent probability. Teams had already used Charlotte's blitzes to create 4-on-3 situations during the season.
Once that pass out of the trap is made, the opposition's big is in a spot where he can really punish the Hornets either by attacking himself or making the correct pass outside.
Little could all of us know that Clifford might be forced to tone this coverage back after Miami capitalizing on it already in the first game of the series.

Now that we have a game 2 thread up, lets talk about some adjustments that need to be made for this game.
My first thoughts are:
- Energy. Effort. You wouldnt think those would be things we need to stress, but here we are. Everyone was a step slow.
- Go under more Wade/Dragic screens, make them adjust to our adjustment. Bet on those two to make jumpers.
- Play at a faster pace on offense. Any chance we have to run, should be taken. Heat want to play slower, get us late into shot clock, gives them chance to set up Whiteside. But to run, they have to miss and we have to rebound
- More minutes for Cody, less minutes for Al. Less minutes for Al/Frank together. Think about Batum at 4, Lamb at 3, if possible, with bench unit.

Play our type of game and dictate tempo.
I don't think Miami will have another ~60% attempts made game.

They have to stop Whiteside from being the best player to not get swept.

As someone who has followed Deng over the years, he isn't the type of player that consistently beats a team.
The biggest players Charlotte needs to learn how to control is Wade and Whiteside; those are the two stars on the Heat roster and if you are able to slow them down, the rest of the team starts to drag down with them.
One thing that I'd try on offense is luring Whiteside away from the rim to negate the chances of shot blocks. Kaminksy, Zeller, or Hawes at the 5 would do this. Obviously, you run into the problem of defending Whiteside on the other side which out of the 3, Zeller has the most strength to do it.
Big Al could go toe to toe with Whiteside and take about 20 shots, but then you'd neglect a lot of the 3 point sharp shooters on the team. It also didn't work last time we met the Heat in the playoffs so Big Al may be best utilized as a role player to come in and take pressure off of Kemba at opportune times.
Lin also showed some ability to create good shot opportunities last game and he could be the giant(Whiteside) killer that the team needs. The passes were a little erratic(happens first game on road) at times but his smart decision making was apparent.

Team got to play with a sense of urgency on d and we will be alright they will not make those shots like they did in game 1 I bet that. Kemba just got to let the game come to him and he will be doing 25+ points beyond the arch and inside.

My keys to the game:
On offense, speed it up. Both PGs have to push upcourt every instance. I know Kemba likes to take his time to dribble upcourt. He needs to change it up and pass it upcourt quickly to Lee and others. This negates Miami's full court pressure - they always had a guard (Richardson) on Kemba all the way up the floor.
Use Hawes more when Whiteside is on the court. Mix it up with Hawes down low and lots of cuts to give Hawes passing opportunities or move Hawes out to drag Whiteside with him. They need to mix it up.
Less Al, less Kaminsky, more Lamb. We need Lamb's springs against the more athletic Miami wings. Less Daniels - he is good 3pt shooter but he needs space and Miami is too good at closing out. Lamb's athleticism edge is more valued in this instance.
I would continue to put Lin on Wade since Lin is very good about following and denying passes into Wade. When Wade posts Lin up, have wing ready for help defense. If you put Batum on Wade , the length will bother Wade but Batum does not do well chasing Wade around. Even more radical, put Lin against Dragic to counter the pick and roll moves, and hide Kemba against one of the perimeter guys. Dragic on Kemba is asking for trouble as Kemba is too small and does not fight through screens as well, so he gets stuck guarding someone like Whiteside on their p&r, and Kemba doesn't even bother trying at that point.

Start Hawes and let Cody plays off the bench. Don't give Al more than 10 minutes to play. I'd love to see Whiteside chasing Hawes at the perimeter. Let them adjust and not us to adjust to their strength.
It's not gonna happen tho, lol.

I would consider starting Hawes at C with Zeller at PF. Charlotte needs more defensive rebounding and can't afford to play volleyball with Whiteside. If they can secure the defensive board, look to score off primary and secondary breaks, especially with Zeller leaking out. Hawes is a good passer and decent at starting the break also so he should be able to make outlets well. Another advantage of starting Hawes is that when he has a wild hair on his man-bun he is smartly physical and enough beef hold position against Whiteside. Hawes is also one of the least ball-sticky players on offense.
I'd try to avoid playing Jefferson as much as possible, emergency backup for Hawes only. I'd run Zeller into the ground with Frank and Marv dividing time at the PF.
The ball has got to move incessantly on offense and with Whiteside behind them the Miami wings can afford to play aggressive defense so if Lee isn't providing enough of a triple threat I'd consider yanking him for Lamb who has a better in-between game, contingent on the Hawes/Zeller defense experiment is functioning.
Charlotte's got to hit lots and lots of 3's to win unless Whiteside gets into foul trouble and then there's a glimmer of hope of scoring inside. It's not very likely that Deng, Johnson, AND Wade all shoot lights out but if they do then they absolutely have to make Miami's others beat them instead, especially Dragic and Whiteside. As long as Charlotte can force Miami into a respectable number of one and done possessions and make it a game of shooting percentages, then it's anybody's game.

http://wfnz.com/2016/04/19/spencer-percy-from-qch-talks-heat-hornets/Good breakdown of adjustments needed for game 2 from Spencer Perry QCH. 7 mil audio from WFNZ this morning.
Breakdown of clip
- less blitzing of P/R, sag Cody, Zeller lower behind screen, dont allow Whiteside free run to rim, our taggers are too small
- Play Lamb over Frank, Lamb better matchup for their 4 guard lineups.
- Clifford failed to make adjustments coming into game, just thought we could play same way, same rotations and be fine.
- and most importantly, gotta match their effort, which was clearly lacking in game 1.
- Expect counter for Heat, who are expecting us to adjust, lower screens at FT line, more isos for JJ and Wade if we go smaller.

http://www.nba.com/hornets/kemba-walker-2015-16-blogKemba admitted that the team didn't match Miami's intensity level. He said he's going to give everything he has to get the W on Wednesday and that his knee is fine.

I may be in the minority here but i'm all for making them beat us with Whiteside. If we lose to him so be it but I see their wings as a much bigger issue. Shut their wings down I don't care if Whiteside goes for 40.

Is Deng up for free agency? He deserves a bigger contract than Marvin, maybe Batum as well.
