2017 General Offseason Thread

Post#1 » by yosemiteben » Wed Apr 12, 2017 1:23 pm

We are officially in the offseason. This thread can be a catch all for Hornets offseason topics.

I believe they are doing exit interviews and media stuff today, so should be stuff on Twitter and a presser with Cho.

From Chris Kroger (@Kroeger):

Clifford: “Goal was to make playoffs. We don’t have overpowering roster, but we have a roster good enough to be a playoff team.”

Clifford: “Last year we were 4th in crunch time defense, this year we were 29th. That’s the difference.”

Clifford: “I was not as well-connected with this group as I’ve been in other years. That’s where I’ll start in the offseason.”

Clifford on Hibbert: “I thought (preseason) that he could bring something we’ve never had here before - a rim protector.”

Clifford: “When we walked out of Milwaukee after game 1, I was telling the guys we may have something here (in Hibbert).”

Clifford: “We need better bench play. And it’s not just one position. We have a lot of positions we need to get better at.”

Clifford on upgrading roster: “That’s the great question and you can’t be knee-jerk. We have to get back to playing defense.”

Clifford: “If we have a good summer both internally and externally, we can get to where we were two years ago. We have to be honest.”

Clifford: “this is a great basketball city, the fans deserve better and they (players) know that.”

Clifford on Batum skipping EuroBasket: “He’s going to spend a big part of his summer in Charlotte. He wants to be around other players.”

Clifford on 3-point defense: “Our ability to stop the ball was the biggest problem.”

Pretty sure Clifford is light trolling. Adding a qualifier like "who's good at basketball" feels excessive though.

Unfortunately CHA's season in a nutshell. Acquiring 1 high end talent can happen anytime between June and February of 2018. The immediate priority is ensuring NBA depth 1-11 by this July.

- Cody and Miles missed 36 combined games in calendar 2017.
- Sessions didn't play after game #50.

Biz can be a useful player and performed fairly well for us. He was certainly better than what we got at backup center from Hibbert and Al. What we've seen from Plumlee so far is worse than what Biz gave us. We let him walk when we could have signed him for relatively cheap and we've had nothing but downgrades at backup center since.

I could just as easily assert CHA would've traded Cody who was buried behind 4 other bigs. A trade that returned .40 cents on the dollar and resulted in Biz walking for $18M a season. Or worse, retained for $18M.

Orlando sucking with Biz feels relevant, too.

Off Season Strategies that will produce 2017/2018 Winning Season

Post#13 » by BobsBuddy » Wed Apr 12, 2017 10:37 pm

I know Buzz City was really disappointed in our 36-46 season and here's a site you can post your suggestions on how the Hornets can get better for next season. Maybe Hornets Management will read your comments and actually put in place some strategies that will make us more than a second tier NBA team.

Coach Clifford-- If the majority of players respect him and believe in him Keep him. IF not change players or fire him.

POINT GUARD POSITION
We are getting great point production from Kemba, but not the assists.Maybe we should trade Sessions for a big assist first point guard
and use KW like Iverson was used with Philly under Coach Brown?
Michael Carter-Williams from Chicago is a big assist first PG.
Weber and Brob could be kept to backup or KW/Web could be used if we wanted to go small.

SHOOTING GUARD
Both Nic and Jeremy are good offensive players, but both have defensive problems. I would move Nik to 3 and start Kemba at 2. Lamb can backup the 2 .

SMALL FORWARD
Start Nik at 3 and backup with MKG and ||Graham....MWill could also be used at 3

POWER FORWARD
Start Mwill and backup with Frank Or O"Bryant

CENTER
Start Cody
Plumlee
and trade Marco for Ajincia NOP to give us a shot blocker.

DRAFT 2017?
Best available player at 11
Draft a Center second round

Clifford: “Goal was to make playoffs. We don’t have overpowering roster, but we have a roster good enough to be a playoff team.” no arguments here.

Clifford: “Last year we were 4th in crunch time defense, this year we were 29th. That’s the difference.” it would help if you played your defensive specialist small forward in the clutch instead of one of the worst defensive wings in the league. That's a start

Clifford: “I was not as well-connected with this group as I’ve been in other years. That’s where I’ll start in the offseason.” that's fair. it showed at times, but was also part of the reason we did so well in 2014 and 2016. what changed?

Clifford on Hibbert: “I thought (preseason) that he could bring something we’ve never had here before - a rim protector.” this statement has me fuming and you know why. I'll give you a hint. It rhymes with Quizmack

Clifford: “When we walked out of Milwaukee after game 1, I was telling the guys we may have something here (in Hibbert).” weren't we all? then he got hurt and was slow and **** the rest of the year

Clifford: “We need better bench play. And it’s not just one position. We have a lot of positions we need to get better at.” your move, Cho

Clifford on upgrading roster: “That’s the great question and you can’t be knee-jerk. We have to get back to playing defense.” someone tell Rich Cho that when he trades defense for terrible offensive veterans on garbage ass contracts

Clifford: “If we have a good summer both internally and externally, we can get to where we were two years ago. We have to be honest.” ok

Clifford: “this is a great basketball city, the fans deserve better and they (players) know that.” ok

Clifford on Batum skipping EuroBasket: “He’s going to spend a big part of his summer in Charlotte. He wants to be around other players.” this is a great thing to hear. Hopefully Nic can give us his biggest season yet next year

Clifford on 3-point defense: “Our ability to stop the ball was the biggest problem.” then sit the players that don't do it. And stop packing the paint against every team. Zeller and Marvin can close off the paint pretty well. MKG and all the other wings should be instructed to stay on the shooters. This isn't a new issue. At all.

whatever you do, you need to make MKG a viable player on offense, particularly in the 4th quarter... I actually think MKG is pretty good on offense too but he needs a PG who can hit him on the move, he needs to have a green light to hit mid-range jumpers... of course it will be great if he can hit a good percentage of threes, however you can't use him as another low usage 3D player, he is more than that...

I think we should consider trading everyone and rebuild but not in a GUT type of way. Trade piece for piece and throw in a pick here and there.

No way I would consider HG with out pick. Dude had a knee surgery and did little to nothing to help puke this year. Fans chanted OVERRATED with him. I think he will be another Tyrus Thomas

As I noted in the College Prospect thread, Giles has an elite skill - rebounding. I have no idea of the status of his knee, but I'm betting that doctors will clear him. Also, Giles is already heavier than Tyrus. When he puts on 20 pounds of muscle, he'll be of size to bang in the paint. Dismissing Giles, even as high as eleven, is shortsighted.
