LOL Really?

I used Kemba as an example how we bash our great young players to early before they can develope. And how we should slow down on calling monk the worst player in the league and focusing on his shooting % using Walker as an example.

I guess I was out of line....

Hmmm I wonder why you guys don't like to talk about those days when Kemba was labeled as the 6th man by all the mods lol.

big difference between citing kemba's development curve as sign for encouragement with monk and rehashing arguments from 6 years ago as a form of scorekeeping. one is acceptable form of dialogue, to a point, other is derailing the thread for your benefit/amusement.

MasterIchiro wrote:My take: multiple years, at least two in a row but probably closer to three, Kemba was scapegoated and MKG glorified, to the extent I dubbed this forum the MKG love dome, thus Ben's profile pick. It was done in good fun. Sometimes you just feel silly about a prospect and you can't fully justify it with numbers and data. You never know with young prospects how they're going to turn out. Kemba the scapegoat now the hero. MKG, the guy no one would trade for Klay Thompson, now the worst fitting player on the entire roster and certainly the worst starter. He's on his way out. Kemba will be a lifetime Hornet.

There is some trauma from defending Kemba, among his most passionate fans. We bathed in hate nightly, for YEARS. I think some of that passion has transferred to Monk by some of those same fans, myself included, so we feel a little hypersensitive about it and need to relax. I really don't think the gamethreads will ever deteriorate the way they did on Kemba, with Monk or anyone else for that matter. And I don't hear a chorus of calls to trade Monk either. I don't know why the Kemba hate intensified as fiercely as his believers believed in him. Maybe it was some kind of feedback loop. It won't ever get that way again. Also, we depended on Kemba more than we do Monk. It's not as important that Monk carry the team as it was for Kemba in those years. Yes, I expect growing pains but I'm proud to take a stand and believe in Monk. I don't need numbers. When you take a stand, just be ready to answer for it when the results trickle in. It's fair game for those who took a stand and it's all in good fun to look back with hindsight.

Extremely well thought out and said. Props on this.

OK, enough about throwing it in people's faces that we were right about Kemba. This is a Monk thread.

We need to throw it in people's faces that we were right about Monk.

That's the thing. I have never thrown it in anyone's face. And I won't if Monk becomes great either. Not my style.

My thought is that it traditionally takes 3-4 years for a young PG to be 100% adjusted to their NBA role. That's the kind of timeline I'm expecting to see from Monk regardless of if he ends up being a PG, SG, or combo guard. I'm less concerned with what he's labeled than with his impact too.

All that said, watching Monk in games in a lot of fun for me. The shooting, the dunks, it's all good. When he's in the game I make a point of watching him on D as well. He got torched a lot on that end. The other guy's play might not have been spectacular, but points are points.

I think that the coaching change is going to be a really big deal for Malik, and I hope we get to see him playing a bit more ... and I hope that he really works on his PG skills and his D over the summer.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

We need some positivity in here:

Kemba is the man, but he can't do what Monk did above.

I don't think we've had anyone since the Geralds and J-Rich that can do that.

Speaking of them, I would be 100% stoked if Monk can become as good as prime Jason Richardson.

I really hope Monk gets an invite to the dunk contest in Charlotte next year. That would be awesome for the local fans to see. I don't think he is quite ready or deserving yet for the Three-Point Contest but maybe that's in his future. Hopefully Kemba gets the Three-Point Contest nod next year.

Since Tatum is tearing it up in the playoffs, I thought it might be good to remember that Monk outplayed him when they went head to head in high school:

Even just an inch would be significant.

New Hornets coach calls Malik Monk 'dynamic.' Here's how the guard fits in his plans.

Monk is a rare breed of scorer. He has the potential to be a special player, but the development has to be perfect. He needs a lot of help on defense and he has to learn to how to finish through contact. I think a year of tanking should help him out. He's a guy that needs to have the ball in his hands on almost every possession. If we trade Kemba, I'd like to see Monk and Lamb starting together for a year.
