What is Kupchak's next big move?

Post#1 » by MasterIchiro » Tue May 29, 2018 2:46 am

Now that a new coach is in place, what happens next? If the GM were Cho, I'd expect no surprises. The Hornets would select at their draft slot (an athlete with size and no skill). But with Kupchak, I don't know. This depends on negotiations with other teams and what they want.

I picked that he will just draft at 11, but I'll put odds at roughly 40% that the pick is traded. I think that moving up is highly unlikely. Less than 1% that it happens.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

I would think a trade would depend on who is there and what offers come in for the pick. If Miles is there, they probably keep it. If someone like Young falls, maybe they deal it.

I hope its trade out or trade up. Isn't much quality in this draft past 7 or 8

I hope he can trade up, but that's easier said than done because someone has to actually want to trade down and there's no guarantee that will happen. I'd also be surprised if the pick is packaged in a trade for a vereran player. So I think the most likely outcome is that he'll stay at 11 and draft whomever he likes.

So, I've come to the conclusion that Mitch isn't going to come in here and rebuild. The fanbase isn't able to support it at this point and with the ASG being in Charlotte, it's important to keep the team relevant around that time. Thus, we are going all in on Kemba and will need cheap talent for the next few years. That's why we move up in this draft by trading #11 and a future 1st + possibly players to get a solid prospect that can play along side Kemba while we can't pay anybody else. The logical pick is Michael Porter Jr. His pick will fall between 4-6. If he falls to 6, I expect us to move up.
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

Monk can be that special talent alongside Kemba. They need a scorer in this draft because offense rules. That's why I love Bridges. He has a bag of tricks and he's very very aggressive as a scorer. He finds the basket. He can rely on brawn or finesse, inside and out. He fits the modern NBA better than most of the prospects, including the high lotto picks. Maybe Sixers would take Lamb + 11 for 10 + 27.

Monk is standing on his last leg here. I wouldn't mind moving him if we get the chance. He hasn't shown anything to make me believe he will be a meaningful contributor anytime soon.

Based on the number of coaches he interviewed, I am guessing this guy does his homework. I think he will find someone in the draft that he likes. Position of need in the draft is PG and SG.

The new coach hasn't had a chance to work with the current roster yet so I don't expect many moves there even though we have way to many centers and not enough guards.

I voted for OTHER because there was no option to trade BACK. I have NEVER seen a draft this deep before. There is lottery talent deep into the second round. Even guys I just found out about like RAY SPALDING and Jontay Porter who could go deep in the second round who have loads of potential.

My dream Kupchak moves on draft day would be...

TRADE KEMBA - we trade kemba on draft night for a teams 1st and 2nd this year, and a future 1st.
We use them to select Tony Carr and Shamarie Ponds

TRADE D HOWARD - for a 2nd rounder this year and we use that to select Kelan Martin.

TRADE MALIK MONK - for a 2nd this year and we use it to select Malik Newman.

TRADE OUR 11 PICK - and recieve a teams 20th pick plus their this years 2nd rounder. and use those two picks for chandler
hutchinson and jontay porter

TRADE ZELLER - For a 2nd this year. Use it to draft arnoldas kulboka.

we would also have a future 1st and 2nd pick

NEW ROSTER

Tony Carr - Shamarie Ponds - Michael Carter-Williams

Malik Newman - Jeremy Lamb - Nicolas Batum

Chandler Hutchison - arnoldas kulboka - Dwayne Bacon

Kelan Martin - Marvin Williams Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Jontay Porter - Willy Hernangomez - Frank Kaminsky

RAY SPALDING - if we cant get porter

Devonte Graham - if we cant get ponds

We do a whole youth movement and become the boston celtics overnight with two future picks to spare

I love my HORNETS but it would be so cool to change GM's coaches and the whole team.

Love this idea, only wish you could of got some more second rounders. I mean each year like 6-8 stars are found there.

Being a Bigten guy ive watched a decent amount of Tony Carr this year. He is a bigger point guard and shots the ball well but he is not very athletic, didnt do well at the combine. I think he can be Spencer Dinwiddie, but that’s about it.

Thanks for the input. I really like this idea as well because I LOVE KEMBA but I think the best chance to move him would be on draft night. Also about CARR that was the only question I had from his footage. His lack of athleticism and speed. I couldn't find much speed. I would still love to draft him and would love to get Devonte Graham(over ponds) as insurance for the kemba trade. I am huge on martin, hutchinson and newman. I think that would be a nice building block and core.

I also think that me moving Zeller was good since hes often injured. Howard is a player that you can never depend on and kemba would be the only departure and w we be gaining 3 picks for him. 2 would be point gaurd selections with a futue first

Everyone always looks good from highlights... I remember this time last year everyone was about Monte Morris, Blossomgame, Frank Jackson... but that’s not fair because it’s too early.

The year before AJ hammons, Demetrius Jackson, Diamond stone, Petr Cornelie were all supposed to be good, haven’t seen them do anything.

The year before that JP tokoto was a board favorite.

Second rounders are really just a shot in the dark. I like taking shots hoping to hit a contributor. But I don’t want to trade proven guys for a low chance.
