Not Really A Coach - The Tony Parker Thread

“The Spurs made an offer, but it was only for one year, and the role was kind of shaky,” Parker said. “I wanted to have a real challenge. I don’t want to become a coach before I’m really a coach.”

In Charlotte, Parker will back up All-Star point guard Kemba Walker. He will bridge the gap between Walker and DeVonte Graham, a 23-year-old the Hornets love but are not quite ready to entrust with regular rotation minutes.

If TP joins the coaching staff after his contract I wouldn't be mad at all.

The plan better be for him to retire after this season and become an assistant coach so his salary doesnt count against the cap next year.

Why is his signing not on the team website? Is he unavailable, in France or something?

Welcome Tony, you will be glued to the bench by mid season (maybe sooner). I wouldn't be surprised if Devonte' beat him out for the backup PG job in training camp, you can't run a fast offense with a 36 year old.

Very good move to make that 2nd year non-guaranteed. I think these are little things they are doing to prepare for that Kemba extension.

I wanted this type of deal a month before the actual deal.

Very nice move again from Mitch. Other than the questionable DH12 trade (but I trust noone offered us more with the same basics and goals to be reached with the trade) and the pass on Porter (that medical must have been horrifying) I like Mitch's moves very much. All around smart little nuances.

Parker came here just to play with Batum and have fun with his buddy/brotha.
Don't be fooled by the "I want the challenge" speech.

Not that I dislike the signing, I believe Kemba has a lot to learn from tony's 16 years of playoffs experience and I like him.

For years now the Hornets have tried to resurrect the careers of former stars (Al Jeff, Lin, Hibbert, Dwight, even former Rookie of the Year MCW). Those signings/trades involved short-term risk which worked or didn't, but regardless I would argue that the approach has an inherent flaw: try these guys for a year, if they don't work it blocks young player development and disrupts team chemistry; if they do then lose them to free agency (Lin). Either way the short-term risk approach leads to roster instability, to perennial attempts to resurrect another player, to once again patch the roster. It's why the Center and Backup PG positions have been so incredibly unstable.

I hoped that with a new GM the approach would be different. Instead, the team is taking another flyer on an old former star. Is there anyone who has more than 50/50 confidence that Parker is going to stay healthy and be productive in a way that helps Kemba? At age 36, after the season he put up last year with Gregg Popovich as his coach? In a league giving itself fully over to 3 pt shooting? A backup PG who can no longer defend or shoot at even league average level?

This time the risk is huge. Another year of lack of support from the backup PG position will surely weigh on Kemba, and might prove to be the pivot that leads him out the door at the end of the season. Kemba is saying all the right things right now, but would you stick around if your team failed year after year to give you the roster support you need to extend your career?

The ONLY WAY this Parker signing makes sense to me is if mgmt viewed a healthy Devonte Graham as ready to grab major minutes at backup PG. All my fingers and toes crossed

Mitch drafted a backup point guard in his first season, something Cho never managed to do over the course of half a dozen drafts. The Parker signing was all about helping JB implement his system and hopefully getting more out of Batum.

Actually most of the guys we signed have been able to resurrect their careers. Jefferson, Lin, and even Dwight (basing this off stats). Even a guy like Marvin Williams had a small resurgence with us. As far as killing player development, I don't really agree because we haven't drafted very good previously, so besides Monk, Bacon, and Lamb we really haven't hindered anyones development. And, lets be truthful, if we had any other coach besides Clifford last year, MCW would have quickly been benched and Monk given more playtime, so that signing wasn't necessarily the problem, it was just we kept playing him. Guys like Kaminsky/MKG/Zeller have all had their chance to play.

I understand your concern Snidely and I share it to a certain extent. It really does seem like the whole Parker thing is a big bet on Graham. There's just no way TP will be worth playing in a year from what I've seen, maybe they needed a guy who could be pushed aside as soon as the rookie is groomed? Among the players willing to sign onto that sort of arrangement TP probably had the edge because of Batum/Borrego. It's the only interpretation that seems sensible, so I hope we're doing that and not being idiots again.

Love the deal even more

We just have a chemistry and closing games problem. If we can solve that, we are playoff team easy

As long as JB isn't too stubborn to play Lamb/Monk at the end of games we won't be as easy to defend because teams won't be able to get away with selling out to stop Kemba.
