Should we waive/stretch Batum's remaining contract?

Post#1 » by 316Hornets » Tue Jun 4, 2019 6:21 pm

If we waive Batum between July 1 and August 31, his remaining salary is paid over twice the number of years remaining on his contract, plus one.

So, if we waived him July 1st, we could stretch his contract out and pay:

2019/20: 10,539,130
2020/21: 10,539,130
2021/22: 10,539,130
2022/23: 10,539,130
2023/24: 10,539,130

If we waive Batum between September 1 and June 30, his current-year salary is paid on its normal schedule, with any subsequent years spread over twice the number of remaining years, plus one.

So, if we waived him September 1st, we could stretch his contract out and pay:

2019/20: 25,565,217
2020/21: 9,043,478
2021/22: 9,043,478
2022/23: 9,043,478

Doesn’t make sense. We need to eat it for this season and next unless we can trade him.

If this team played in NYC, LA, Houston, Chicago etc. it would be an option. But MJ/Charlotte can't afford to set $50 million on fire.

In that case, play Batum 45 minutes a night and maybe we can get a Disabled Player Exception if/when he gets a season ending injury.

Absolutely not. All we can do, short of trading him for cap relief, is bite the bullet and in two years we're totally off the hook.

Still think after this summer his deal won’t be as bad.

One thing to keep in mind. Kemba's peak is now. In 3 years, he will be on the downhill. Freeing up some cap to make a run now would be my choice if we are going all in on Kemba. Maybe we can roll with Batum this season, but there's no way I'm paying him 27 mil in 2020/21 season with what will likely be one of Kemba's last All-NBA potential seasons.

Stretching Batum won't get us under the cap. What would be the point of this?

Agreed, it wouldn't make much sense this season. That's why I chose to pay him his contract this season, and then stretch the last year. 18 extra million to spend along with MKG, Biz, and Marv off the books.

With Kemba and Batum, we are looking at about 92 million in the 2020/21 season.
Stretch Batum in 2020/21 and that figure comes down to 74 million committed. It also lessens the affect of the entire 27 million since the cap should raise gradually over the course of 3 years.

Basically, one more year of the Kemba show and we'll actually be in a decent spot to make some free agent signings. Maybe even a max guy.

I say we are stuck with him this season but its not inconceivable that we could find someone to take him off our hands when he only has one year left on his deal. No need to stretch it out for a couple extra years.

Waiving Biz probably make more sense if he isn't traded.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Next season Batum either becomes a $27m expiring salary we can trade to a team making max slot rooms or keep him ourselves to let $27m come off our cap so we can go shopping in two summers.

I doubt we can do much with cap space this time around as we have literally never been able to do anything significant in the history of this franchise outside of Al Jefferson, so trade him for someone who can help improve our roster if possible.

Sit him on theend of the bench to only play in emergencies. Let the young wolves sink or swim. They play so much faster without him. Win or lose, it's more exciting basketball without Ms. Batum.
