Re: Free Agent Targets
We are not signing anyone of note in free agency. Seriously, we have little room and MJ will not pay any tax. The front office and coach are painting things in a positive spin, which I get, but they aren’t positioned well to do much of anything (I seriously doubt there will be a trade of consequence either).
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

They're over $11M below the tax no UFA signed in the past several days has approached even half that. There's really no one "of note" left in FA, we're just talking about filling out roster spots. I mean, they can't even sign camp contracts until they add two more actual NBA contracts, so they have to do something.

Lin would be smart for a reserve veteran so count him out. Who else is an option?

Hansbrough, believe it or not. The young guys need someone to show them what real effort looks like. Also, how to set a screen, how to rebound on both ends. He has transformed his game over the past three years, since leaving Charlotte. Veteran minimum contracts are cheap.

I remember someone from this forum saying stuff like Hansbrough is our best player behind Kemba.
And how losing him was the worst move by our FO in a decade.
Was that you ?

I said a lot of good things about Hansbrough, and often, but not that he was the best player behind Kemba. It was hard to tell, because Coach Clifford had him glued to the bench. Certainly, he was among the top three rebounders on the team, but his specialty, the offensive rebound, was not valued under Clifford, who had everyone running back as soon as the shot went up.
I do recall say that losing Hansbrough, Lin, and Courtney Lee all at the same time was a boneheaded move. Instead, they went all in on Batum and Marvin Williams. The Hornets have not made the playoffs since.
Now my point is that the team could use an elder statesman, especially with Kemba Walker and Tony Parker gone.

Re: Free Agent Targets
This team has become the lowest point of desire for free agents this summer. We have no future success on the horizon, heavy with high $ vets that will get minutes and no obvious hole for those minutes. Need a job? Yeah, we might sign a couple of cheap end of bench guys but it will be after nearly all seats on the bus are filled.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I might have exaggerated those declarations for the fun haha !
But I think I was referring to you. And to be honest, I kinda agree that a “tough guy” like handsbrough might do well for the young guys we have !

Re: Free Agent Targets
What about signing Noah to the minimum?
do we have the money for him?
I think he played pretty well for the Grizzlies last season. He could be helpful when Cody's gonna be hurt !

If we don’t get Hansbrough, I’d be good with getting Vince Carter, Raymond Felton, Tyler Zeller or Dexter Strickland.

I'm curious to hear some thoughts on what our free agent strategy should be. What are we hoping a free agent hire would bring to the table? Do we actually want to win more games this season?

A good mix of marketing assistance and veteran depth without adding to nine wins would be J-Lin.

Re: Free Agent Targets
Feels like the best case scenario would be guys that draw eyeballs without generating a lot of wins. Lin makes a lot of sense, as does bringing in Vince Carter as he completes his "playing across 4 decades" novelty.yosemiteben wrote:I'm curious to hear some thoughts on what our free agent strategy should be. Oh god, this made me think of Melo.

I think Mitch likes to keep the last roster spot open for trade flexibility. If we sign anyone else it will probably be another two-way guy like Franks.

Somehow I can see it being Carter. He fits the bill a bit more than Lin.

Re: Free Agent Targets
We lost a center and did not replace him. Our depth at that spot is currently Cody (unreliable), Biz, and Willy. So unless Willy is making some huge strides this season - we really need to pick up a center. More so than a 3rd PG. But I suspect they'll toss in PJ and Marvin at center so we can get man handled in the paint all season.

I think the free agency strategy should be to look for players that fit long term with the core young players on the team. I don't see the wisdom in short term deals for vets who take playing time from young players. Player Evaluation/Development and Asset Accretion should take precedence over wins imo

So offseason Max is 20 guys... so we have most spots left in the NBA at 7 open spots.

That number isn't accurate for the Hornets. The team has 15 spots filled (unless McDaniels and Franks haven't been officially signed). I haven't heard or seen anything about McDaniels being signed though, so the count might be 14.
1) Batum
2) Rozier
3) Biyombo
4) Marvin
5) Zeller
6) MKG
7) Bridges
8) Monk
9) Washington
10) Bacon
11) Graham
12) Hernangomez
13) Martin
14) McDaniels
15) Franks

Re: Free Agent Targets
Neither Martin nor McDaniels have signed officially, so that's where the 13 comes in; but it's a pretty safe bet they'll at least be a part of the training camp roster.
Perkins should also be in tow with his Exhibit 10, which gives him the inside track to the other two-way. Plus Kulboka and Caleb Martin, whose agent claimed he was gonna sign for "more than summer." Chealey could be back as well. Not as many openings as it appears.
