2020 Prospects Head To Head: Wiseman Vs Okongwu

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Sat Oct 24, 2020 12:46 pm

Different to our big board, I thought it might be interesting to see who posters preferred in a head to head situation when you only had 2 prospects to choose from and not 10.

Future match ups will be:
Ball Vs Haliburton
Hayes Vs Anthony
Toppin Vs Williams
Okoro Vs Vassell
Nesmith Vs Bey
Hampton Vs Green
Pokuševski Vs Smith
Achiuwa Vs Stweart

I like OO, but after seeing us get dominated by opposing bigs for years and years I'm taking the size and length of Wiseman.

I also have belief in Wiseman's ability to add range to his jump shot and start knocking down 3's at a reasonable clip.

I'm 100% against taking centers who haven't displayed a sufficient track record for playmaking and range shooting. The league became saturated with centers who don't add anything beyond traditonal duties like rebounding and rim protection. Role playing centers have lost value, even great athletes like Wiseman. If I'm taking one at 3 I need to see a track record that inspires some vision of Jokic or Adebayo. Okongwu didn't even attempt a 3 in college. And while you can cherry pick an exception like Adebayo who likewise didn't attempt a 3 in college, I'm not a big fan of using an exception as a substitute for absence of evidence.

That being said. I like Okongwu more and bet he's ahead of Wiseman on most big boards. What makes his defense potential elite is his ability to switch and to defend pick and roll. You'd never have to hide him late in games and he can become a force closing out, an ultimate stopper. These types of centers don't grow on trees. Most are getting exploited on the perimeter and seeing reduction in minutes where they're used in matchups. Also, while Okongwu didn't attempt a 3 he still scored efficiently over a large college sample. Wiseman has been riding his own hype based on his freakish combo of size and athleticism. I feel more comfortable with Okongwu and believe he's moving up draft boards while Wiseman falls as teams adjust to recent trends in the way the league is shifting to the perimeter.

Neither will stretch the floor imo but at least Okongwu can defend the perimeter.

OO is a guy who just wins. Wiseman has tons of potential with his size and athletics ability.

I feel like OO could have played minutes on a lot of the teams in the playoffs this year. I think Wiseman would need a few years to be able to do that.

OO is a sure bet on a triple. Wiseman is a swing for the fences pick that might home run or it might get you to first base ... maybe.

Between the two I pick OO every time, though I'll freely admit that Wiseman *might* be better in the long run.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Can anyone picture Okongwu as a slashing 4 ala Siakam next to PJ at center? I'd pick him over Wiseman if that's in the cards.

I'm going Wiseman, but I would be quite happy with either. Wiseman is my number 1, OO fluctuates between 2 and 3 with Edwards

I’m an once again asking if Wiseman is better than Okongwu at anything right now? Maybe free throw shooting. At this point I don’t even think this one is close.

Like we know nothing about Wiseman, whereas we KNOW OO anchored a top 20 defense in college basketball last season

This isn’t a thing anymore. There are three positions in basketball now, guards, wings, and bigs.

That works until you're trying to guard one of the best centers in the league with a 'versatile pf'

OO is an elite paint defender with nearly identical body type and measurements as Bam. He'll be fine playing C.

Anyway Charlotte needs immediate value and the safe bet is Okongwu. Especially if Okongwu brings some good playmaking skills with few turnovers
If he is good enough, he would be the main candidate to try to grab another potential star - from a guaranteed 1-3 lottery pick or a trade for one of those star potential prospects if he lands in a win now team - from next two drafts (taking into account that Charlotte does not waste its own good 1st high lottery pick)
