2021 Draft Prospect: Keon Johnson

Post#1 » by JMAC3 » Thu Jun 24, 2021 4:19 am

Another guy in our range.

Just set the NBA combine record with a 48 inch vertical. Previous record of all time is 45.5 inches so he broke it easily.

Leading scorer on Tennessee this season, hustle guy who measured in a bit shorter than expected at combine. Plays more like a 3/4 in college, but his height is going to force him into a 2/3 role in the NBA at just 6-5 and a 6-7 wingspan.

Struggles shooting the ball at this stage of his career at just 27% on 1.8 attempts from three. 70% from the line though and he started to show some serious improvement as the season went on after not starting for the first 10 games of his career. Last 5 games of the season he went for 23,14,13,20 and 14 points while shooting almost 72% from the field during that stretch.

Overall I think his calling cards at next level will be defense.

Has a really high ceiling if offense becomes more consistent.

Hopefully his combine performance tricks a team into getting him before we can.

You guys are crazy. Yes he is a little raw but if the shooting starts falling for him what's not to like. He's and angry player much like Jalen Green. We need a bulldog like this, especially next to LaMelo

Looks like this may be a lonely island around here, but Keon>>Moody for me. Keon is pedal to the metal every single second he's out there, literally one of his biggest problems right now is he's so damn fast he's got to slow down just a little bit and let things come to him. Moody is definitely more polished right now, but Keon's ceiling is considerably higher in my eyes. Moody lacks explosiveness whereas Keon is setting records athletically. The obvious question mark is his shot, if he figures that out I think he might be one of the few players in tier 3 that has star potential.

I hate the assumption that more athletic means higher ceiling

He's the most athletic guard in the draft and plays with a high motor. He favors his right hand a lot when driving though. But this guy running with LaMelo would be awesome

So Keon and Kai Jones the exceptional athletes make up our 'swing for the fences' picks this round?

I never said that. I like Moody quite a lot myself, but I do like Keon better. Moody is more polished right now, but I see more star potential in Keon. If he learns to shoot, and that is definitely a big if, he can end up as one of the best players in this draft. Athleticism does not equal higher ceiling, but it is easier to improve as a shooter than to improve explosiveness.

If MKG had had a shot he would have been amazing. I have no stomach for doing that again.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

I'm done with the learn to shoot picks for the rest of my life. Scarred.

He doesn't have a broken jump shot guys. Its just a slow release. Something he can fix with NBA training.

We need someone that is angry and competitive and come in and lock someone down. Miles has some angry dunks but is "too nice". Hayward and PJ are ambivalent.

The more I watch Keon the more I want him. How is his tape much different from Jalen Green?

If Cody Zeller had a fast release he'd be an all-star.

2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu

27% on two attempts per game gives me some real deal "broken" vibes

MKG was 25.5% on 1.3 attempts in college for reference

He didn’t shoot it well, but I’m not sure he is a bad shooter. He has good elevation, a high release and seems to shoot it with confidence.

Not promising he ever gets there but Donovan Mitchell shot 25% as a freshman.

Keon looks like a potential lockdown defender on the wing, great athlete and looks to have a decent IQ from the way he plays. Definitely high on my board at 11.

He also just started playing basketball a few years ago. So yes, he's super raw but unlike Kuminga, Johnson can impact right away with high energy dunks and defense. He also finishes well at the basket and day 1 is one of the most athletic players in the NBA

Tennessee's Keon Johnson had everyone talking after his 48" max vertical. But it's starting to sound more like No. 8 is the highest he goes. One scout talked about how Johnson had all this athleticism and energy, but doesn't quite know how to optimize it. Assuming the Golden State Warriors (if they stick at No. 7) are looking for a rookie contributor, it's tough to picture Johnson going before the Orlando Magic's second pick.

Has a really high ceiling if offense becomes more consistent.

He can replace one or both Martin’s. Anyone who can jump 4 feet deserves to have the next 5 years to POSSIBLY develop into a good/great player.
