2024 Draft Prospect - Devin Carter

Devin Carter is zooming up the draft mocks, and presumably team’s draft boards. He’s 6-3 and 195lbs. How can some consider Reed Sheppard so highly, and not consider Carter?
The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor says his upcoming draft board will have Carter ranked FIFTH among all players. Says teams are highly intrigued with the 22 year old, who blew up the combine with record performances, shot the ball very well, and showed his leadership in scrimmages. Carter is ALL DAWG when he plays. If the Hornets really want to put a small guard next to Melo, is Carter a better option than Reed?
Basics and a scouting report from NBA personnel via HoopsHype:
In 2023-24, Carter averaged 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.0 block, and 1.8 steals per game. He shot 47.3 percent from the field, 37.7 percent from three, and 74.9 percent from the foul line.
Carter is the son of former NBA point guard Anthony Carter.
” I think Carter has a chance to be a good guard,” an NBA executive told HoopsHype. “He can defend at a high level. If you look at a player like Derrick White and what he does for the Celtics in transition defense, and a guy is going full speed ahead at him, and he can jump and block a shot, Carter does a lot of that stuff. He’s got length, can pass, rebound, and does all the things you want. What impacts winning? He does all those types of things that impact winning at a high level. He helps you gain an extra possession. He helps you finish a possession by getting a rebound or steal. He brings a lot of those things at a high level that a lot of other players in this draft don’t bring. I think the shooting doesn’t look great, but he makes enough and is confident. I think he’ll be able to make enough shots when he’s wide open.”
“I think the 20-30 range is where Carter should be,” an NBA scout told HoopsHype. “He’s making his shots this year, which I still don’t trust. He’s made some big shots this year, though. It’s all of the other tenacity stuff like his defense, making an impact during clutch times, and rebounding the ball at his size.”

Yeah Iove these small guards.
We traded Rozier just to add more younger versions Mann/NSJ/Reed/Carter
Who next Dillingham?

Oh, I'm not drafting him at 6, but he's going to be a good NBA player. Defensive beast, crazy rebounder (8.7 per!) for his size, improved shot, leadership+. Someone will be happy with him.

I'm not doubting that.
My pro comp for Reed is Kirk Hinrich. He was a high quality role player for many years. I just don't like his fit in that role here. If Melo wasn't our PG I would be much higher on Reed as the pick.
*My bad I thought you were talking about Reed.

Ha, I'm not drafting Reed at 6 either

- like the Hinrich comp.

Is 6'4" in shoes with 6'8" wingspan a small guard?

He plays pretty big as well - I've seen a lot of Derrick White comps.
FWIW:
Height w/out shoes / Wingspan / Weight / Draft age
Carter: 6' 2.25'' / 6' 8.75'' / 193.0 / 22.26
Holiday: 6' 3.25'' / 6' 7'' / 199.0 / 19.01
White: 6' 3.25'' / 6' 7.5'' / 189.8 / 22.96

I like Carter if we trade down. We have a new GM that might consolidate all the young players in trades, so I'm not worried about fit with Mann, Micic, NSJ etc. right now. Roster might be wildly different by August
For every Derrick White though there's a Kris Dunn. I don't think any of these players are sure things, including the ones I like

For a sg yes I would consider anything under 6'5 undersized for that position.
Just so you know I said I was out if Castle measured out under 6'5.
I just don't want another small guard when we already have multiple on the roster.

Feels like if your metric for small guards kicks out both Derrick White and Jrue Holiday, it's not a super meaningful metric.

Derrick White and Jrue Holiday look great next to two ball dominant 1st/2nd team All-NBA wings and a giant center who can defend the paint and launch threes.
Why are people neglecting context in regards to these guys?
Payton Pritchard looks good in his situation. He would not look good in Charlotte in a different role. Same for McConnell, White, or Jrue

I sort of like the idea of Carter. I just wonder with any guard, can they earn a spot in our rotation based on merit.
1. LaMelo
2. Mann
3. Micic
4. Nick Smith Jr
5. Amari Bailey
Amari Bailey was 6'3.25" at the combine without shoes. Devin Carter was 6'2.25" without shoes. Bailey had an 8'7'' standing reach compared to 8'2'' for Carter.
Bailey shot 39% from 3 as a college freshman which was much better than the 26% from 3 Carter shot as a freshman and even better than the 37% from 3 Carter shot last year as a Jr. Bailey is younger than Carter.
So I am wondering if Carter is better than the 5 guard in our rotation and that is if you consider Brandon Miller and Cody Martin to be forwards, and then we also have Seth Curry on the roster.

I am not just trying to pick on Carter here either. I have the same concern about all these guards. There is just a lot more competition at guard in the league.

Pretty strongly disagree with the take that Jrue and White depend on anyone else to be effective on either end of the floor.

I had to bite, no point referring to porzingis, they also looked great next to horford for most of the playoffs

I don’t want short guards, but there is no question that a player has to have more than measurables to succeed. Amari Bailey, per his stats, should have been knocking down the door for more minutes, playing our reserve PG role, heck maybe subbing for Melo when hurt again. Didn’t happen.
Carter is the best PG in this draft not named Topic, but his strength, defense and perhaps leadership are superior to Topic. Is he the right pick for us? Not at 6 if we can still draft Castle or Knecht, but he’s dang close and may be the better player.
