He’s basically like poor man’s Mark Williams so I understand the front office’s thought process on this.

I've seen him compared to Brook Lopez.

Very big, skilled, drop-defense shotblocker who can shoot some.

CBS:

34. Charlotte Hornets (via Pelicans): C Ryan Kalkbrenner, Creighton

This might be the only A+ I hand out in the second round. Love, love, love this for Charlotte, especially after dealing Mark Williams on Wednesday. He's a 7-foot-1 center with a 7-foot-6 wingspan who is ready to contribute early. The four-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year award winner can be an anchor for the Hornets' defense and has become a real threat as a floor-spacer to boot. Grade: A+

Watched several Creighton games this year. He's just what Charlotte needs and has the potential to become a solid starting center. Lacks Marks spring and length but has a much stronger base, better defensive instincts (the kind Mark frustratingly lacked despite his physical gifts) and is more offensively skilled

He looks like the kind of guy you circle your calendar for if you’re targeting the dunk of the year award. He’s gonna absolutely eat some posters from the guys blowing past Kon/Melo/McNeeley/Mann in the backcourt but hopefully he can contribute the rest of the time

Pre injury?

Post injury. Not entirely brick footed but a slow guy. Not all that explosive. Dominant at the rim finishing which is mainly based on his length. I think he’ll struggle the exact same way Mark did.

I absolutely LOVE this pick. Kalkbrenner was rated a first round prospect. The CBS Sports summary is excellent, be sure you watch it. Two time conference defensive POY, can shoot the 3, strong finisher, runs the floor pretty well. Has to get better defending on the P&R, more of a drop coverage 5. Plays with passion. Good character (of course).

I do too. He has his limitations and like all slow footed lumbering bigs, will get exploited on switches and in the p/r sometimes when forced out of drop. All in all, he's a stellar value at 34 though, a defensive anchor down low and should be able to provide quality minutes immediately

He reminds me of a mix between Mason Plumlee and Zach Edey.

His movement reminds me some of Plumlee and some of his footwork, spins and head fakes. But defensively he reminds me of Edey where his blocks are all pretty much due to length and not vertical pop. Also his 3 pt shooting is nice but it’s not a huge part of his game 0.6 makes per game, which is roughly what Edey did as a rookie per 36.

He does have to load up a bit to leap for lobs and 2nd jumps which is what kind of limits his potential some.

Best case scenario, he develops into a Poeltl or less offensively sophisticated brook lopez. Those guys are ground oriented and not at all explosive but are nonetheless stellar drop coverage anchors effective in using their length and girth (been waiting for the opportunity to use that descriptor for the big white Kalk) to control the paint.
