Bonnell says Bobcats should trade for Rasheed

What do you think? He says the Bobcats should give up the 9th pick, some players, and some salary cap space. He says his great relationship with Larry Brown and his versatility on offense and defense would make this a good fit and perfect complement for Emeka.

One thing I do like is that his 13 million will come off the books in one year to make a run at some nice free agents.

so you are only thinking about sheed as a one year rental then?

13 mil is a lot of salary to make up in filler or cap space, which i dont think we will have once meks cap hold is added, right?

and according to pistons fans we'd have to add okafor and wallace just to make the deal fair...LOL.

While I agree that Rasheed is the type of player that we want at the 4 spot, I was kind of annoyed by the article. Since Bonnell is suggesting that we trade for 'Sheed, shouldn't he also suggest what we give the Pistons in return?

He could've written something like this instead: Hey, I have a great idea, let's trade for Tim Duncan!!! He'd be a great fit here in Charlotte. A perfect example of "playing the right way" for Coach Brown. Granted, I won't propose how we do that, but I'm going to suggest it just because that will make us a better team and because the Oberserver gave me a deadline I have to hit.

I hate to be one of the many Bonnell bashers, but he deserves it in this instance.

Hopefully this forum will flesh out the points better than he did, even though he gets paid to and we don't.

I don't think many Pistons fans would have any problems with trading Sheed for the #9 pick and expirings.

Do you have the expiring contracts though? Are you far enough under the cap to absorb Sheed's salary without giving anything back?

Well it's clear Bonnell's motivation for trading for R. Wallace.

He doesn't know much about basketball, he trashes our team so he isn't much of an "insider," yet he gets paid to write about the NBA.

Solution?

Suggest trading for an overpaid, over-the-hill, angry player so he can spend an entire season trashing the Bobcats for being stupid enough to waste money on a has-been, trashing the Bobcats for stuffing the roster with more UNC players, trashing the NBA for having crazy angry black people that scare away the casual white fan base, etc.

I guess it would secure his job for at least one more year, since it would give him a season's worth of things to complain about.

Perhaps we could include Bonnell in the trade and get one of the Pistons' beat writers in return. Of course we would have to give back even more salary if we expect to trade a scrub for a decent writer.

Now in this case, you're right on the money.

like FFP said, sheed, in theory, sheed is the type of pf we desperately need, mobile, great shooter, great defender, playoff experience.

but here are the problems...

1. sheed is 33
2. he makes 13 mil so we would have to include a lot of salary in return.
3. ammo would have to be part of the deal and i really want to see ammo get a shot a redemption here in charlotte before he is included as filler in a deal. #3 picks in their second season, regardless of how poor they played as a rookie, should not be used as filler.
4. i think we can find a similar and much cheaper solution through FA or via a different trade.

does sheed make us a contender? no
will he be around when our core reaches their prime? no

so, really, this deal would be very short-sighted. it might get us in the playoffs next year, which would be great. but hell, i think we can get there w/ or w/out him anyway.

The rumor on Colin Cowherd yesterday was Rasheed Wallace for Gerald Wallace and Sean May. Scoop Jackson was the guy on and he said that Charlotte feels a need to win now but they won't compromise the future. He said Gerald Wallace is not a Larry Brown guy and that Jared Dudley would get more playing time than Gerald this year. He went on and on about how Brown loves Dudley and that he will get major PT next year. He said the Bobcats had lots of players that can play the 3 so Gerald is expendable. He then went on to say that the Bobcats tend to draft the more established college player than a high upside "project". With that in mind he said the Bobcats would draft Augustin or Kevin Love.

Scoop Jackson seems like a fool but he does have nice sources in the NBA. If Gerald doesn't play much under Brown then we better trade him now before his value drops and he causes problems. We could play JRich, Dudley, or Morrison at the 3.

Felton/Augustin
JRich/Carroll
Dudley/Morrison
Rasheed
Okafor

We will need some more depth up front.

As much as I would love this idea as a Pistons fan, this would horrible for Charlotte. For starters Bonnel doesn't even propose a trade. The most likely player included would have to be Nazr Mohammed, and Detroit wouldn't take him back. So say Sean May or Adam Morrison. Ammo possibly and May never.

So what are you going to do now? Trade Wallace for Wallace. Team would have to be idiots. I also love that he includes the 9 pick as "incentive" for a one year rental (because Charlotte should never resign 'Sheed).

Rasheed is one of my favorite players, but I honestly think his time has passed.

Charlotte SHOULD HAVE used their cap space LAST YEAR to get Kurt Thomas in the trade Seattle got. They should not do this.

Now, if it is Crash and May for Sheed, and we dont give them #9, I am more favorable to that trade. It gives us Sheed for a yr and then $13 mil off the books and we still draft at #9. Maybe they would even throw in their late 1st for our 2nd?

That's a dumb deal regardless.

We could get a helluva lot more than Rasheed Wallace for Gerald Wallace. A lot of teams would love to have G.Wallace, considering what he brings to the team and considering his reasonable contract.

I wouldn't give up anything for Wallace, just because he's not that good on the court anymore, and he's still got all his issues. I wouldn't even trade players I don't like for him. I'd rather use the MLE on a player to fill our PF position, or draft one, or anything other than trading anything substantial for him.

There isn't any to be had for the MLE.

Other than that I'm inclined to agree we should go in another direction, though Crash/May for Sheed ain't all that bad.

Heck, next year if Brown really wants Sheed he can sign him for the MLE.

Oh, it's bad. It's downright awful.

You can get a helluva lot more than Rasheed Wallace for Gerald Wallace.

Apparently some people ain't been watching Rasheed Wallace lately.

If we are going to give up Crash, then I would want someone else too besides Sheed. I would want Chauncey. But we would have to give up more than Crash for him. So I propose:

Chauncey and Sheed for Crash/Carroll/Felton/Hollins

Draft Augustine at #9 to learn from Chauncey for 2 years. Bring back Fabio because Brown can use his versatility. Maybe a Prince like player? Or sign a backup 2 shooter like Flip Murray.

Chauncey/Augustine
JRich/Ammo
Dudley/Herrmann
Sheed/May
Okafor/Nazr

Or we could just stay put, sign Jamison, go over the cap for Okafor, sign a vet backup point for less than the MLE (Lindsay Hunter?) and go to battle with a real coach.

Felton/Hunter
JRich/Carroll
Crash/Ammo
Jamison/May
Okafor/Nazr

If Crash had been averaging 75-80 games per season and didn't just get his 4th concussion I'd agree. Until he gets a year or so under his belt showing some durability we're going to be lowballed. His reasonable contract helps, but teams aren't just going to ignore his injury history and his style of play which makes him even more susceptible.

But as noted Sheed plays the position we're most lacking (and said position is thin in the FA class), he can guard the mobile PFs, can post up, has long range and he does have a high BBIQ.

Not to mention our coach really likes him.

Besides, the value is more than just Sheed, it's also his 13.6 expiring contract.
