Bobcats War Room Extra - A radical idea - NOT a poll.

Post#1 » by August Us Seazr » Thu Jun 5, 2008 3:21 am

I have been somewhat perplexed by the slow nature of building the Bobcats into a winner. I know, a team that has only been playing for four seasons needs to be patient. But it seems to me that we have picked some players that have had their development stymied by the injury bug.

We need some help, and I would like to have you all discuss an idea that I had. If you think it has merit, or if you think it stinks, it doesn't matter. I'd just like the feedback.

Several years back when the Dallas Cowboys were kind of thin on talent, Mr. Jones employed a strategy of trading with teams that wanted to move up in the draft, of course in exchange for something valuable in addition to the exchange of that round's draft picks. For example, if New Jersey with picks # 10 and # 21 wanted to move up to take a certain guy, we swap # 9 for #10 and #21. And then if say Golden State were willing to part with the #15 and next year's 1st rounder, we swap # 10 to Golden State. We turn the # 9 into # 15, # 21, and a first next year. We then use the extra picks as leverage in trades for veterans or just use the extra picks to build depth.

Is this a good concept in general, or maybe good some years but NOT this year? Comments, please and thank you!

This philosophy works in football but in the NBA superstars win games which means we need the best player available. Look what the cats did in 2005 where they took quantity over quality by keeping may and felton instead of trading up for Chris Paul.

agreed, draft picks in the NBA are nowhere near as prized as NFL draft choices.

I know there are some good players to be had in the mid to late 1st round and even in the 2nd round but historically top 10 picks have faired way better than latter round choices.

As said this isn't even able to compare - the NFL has a much better dearth of talent available than the NBA. This simply doesn't apply.

Besides, although I'm a Bills fan and obviously biased, building a team via the "Jerry Jones" way isn't exactly the right way anyway. The early 90 teams were built by Johnson; Jones hasn't shown he has the knack for doing much other than continually being stubborn in his ways and taking risk after risk. They've just payed off more for him than other times.

Yeah agree with everyone else here. You can't really do that in the NBA. The closest you can come to doing that is what we did last year with J-Rich as long as you're under the cap far enough. We couldn't even do that again this year without sending salary back.

The Bobcats should have been doing things to acquire extra picks to build themselves up, but this plan is just possible. If Charlotte wound up with the 3rd pick in this draft, it would really have opened up things but at 9...I just don't see it happening.

As far as the incompetent Hawks. They do a lot of things wrong, but drafting isn't one. <it also helps having Joe Johnson>

Childress, Smith, Williams, and Horford were all their own picks. Only one they really screwed up was Shelden Williams and he was the "Highlight" part of the Bibby trade.

One more thing, what really ticks me off about the Hawks situation...is just how closely they resemble us.

The basic difference is they got a veteran PG to help them along and their rookie Law. Bobcats have Felton and "other". Any idiot realizes that PG is everything. Doesn't matter how much talent you have, the Hawks didn't do anything until this year.

They have a thin frontcourt, so does Charlotte. Zaza Pachuila this season is pretty much Primoz Brezec last season.

The Bobcats were a couple small solid moves from making the playoffs. I truly believe that. Look at the Hawks bench at the start of this season, it wasn't that great. The trade with the Kings made it even worse.

Well, incompetent with top picks. I meant last three years. Hordord was a no brainer considering their situation and from my point of view nobody can justify their picks in in 05' and 06' (Marvin and Sheldon Williams). No matter how solid players they still can be.
