Moving To Charlotte, Part Deux

Post#1 » by Flash3 » Mon Jun 16, 2008 2:33 am

Not sure what happened to my previous thread; probably in transition from the upgrade, but I had another question for you guys.

Are there any barber shops you'd suggest going or not going to in the Charlotte area? I am around South Tryon Street and near Route 49. -- There are a couple I've been in around my area Great Clips, Sport Clips, etc and they seem to cut decent. :dontknow: -- But, in Miami even with the decent ones, there are a lot of better ones that only the people that live/work/inhabit the area know about.

So, fill me in.

Thanks!

so far, so good.

people are much nicer and friendlier as compared to miami, that's for sure.

i've yet to try my work to route just yet, but traffic shouldn't be that bad, again, as compared to miami.

the other thread was useful -- it had Mariah Carey talk (your personal fav ;) ) and also, all the stations for music. lol

yeah, i saw yesterday on forbes (via yahoo) that miami was like the second worst communting city in america behind atlanta... so charlotte should be a breeze then.

as for radio, just remember sports talk is on WFNZ AM 610 or AM 1660. On that station they have the "morning sports page" from 6am to 10am and that show is FABULOUS! bobcats game are on FM 106.1..... and thats all you really need to know. :)

610 n 1660 are pre-set already!

What are some good FM music stations, as someone had listed a huge bunch of 'em on that other thread? -- Stations that play current hits from artists like mariah carey ;) , one republic, chris brown, etc.

And also a station that plays some of the "oldies"

t'was listening a bit to 610 on my way to downtown today and they are more of a comedy/variety type stations (at least what I was listening to) where they talk about everything but sports (it seems) lol

yeah, the morning sports page on 610 is a lot of comedy mixed with some sports talk, but thats what makes it so entertaining... otherwise all you'd hear is college football, college basketball and nascar. dont expect to get much nba discussion in charlotte.

as for other stations

Have any of you guys been to Ashville, NC?

My parents are coming down this week for the 4th, and was planning to drive up there to check it out, as a few have told me it's a definitely must see.

Suggestions?

Yea, Asheville is very nice! Lots of nice eateries. You probably want to get reservations though, I imagine it gets pretty crowded around the 4th. A lot of others are probably more knowledgeable about this than I am, but I went with my family in late July and had a really wonderful time!!

i go to asheville quite often... my wife's best friend lives in asheville. actually went two weeks ago for the robert plant/allison krauss concert at the asheville civic center, which was fantastic.

all of the hotels near downtown were booked two weeks in advance. we ended up staying in one of the many bed and breakfast inns. very nice.

downtown asheville is something else. its the preserved art deco architecture capital of the us. lots of old buildings from the 20s. amazing food, especially if you like vegetarian stuff like me and walt (go to the laughing seed in that case). great music, great art, great shopping........... and lots and lots of freaks. its like boone, nc was 15 years ago.

and of course, if you've never been to the biltmore house you will crap your pants when you see it.

make sure you cruise the blue ridge parkway. the mountains are beautiful.... although i am partial and prefer the mountains around ASU and boone over asheville.

Agreed on Biltmore House. I get up there a few times a year, and never get tired of going. That place is amazing. The house is unbelievable and you can spend 3 hours just touring the inside. Then, going to the Gardens , the Greenhouse and then the walk to the lakes. Tires you out, but it is great. Then, be sure to go to dinner at the Bistro. Their mountain trout is the best I've ever eaten. Finally, tour the Winery, even if wine isn't your thing. Still interesting to see it.

Nice. Thanks for the info, guys.

I got a hotel room booked for the weekend 2 weeks ago just in case we do end up going.

I've heard a lot about the Biltmore Hotel and also blue ridge parkway; paid a visit to the sites today and the biltmore hotel looks stunning! wow-- i wanna see it in person! :D

as far as the biltmore is concerned, if we just wanna tour the garden and all, is there an admission? or is it only if you want to eat dinner inside the hotel?

and, blueridge parkway is nearly 500 miles long, can you drive the 1st 20-30 miles and see everything worthwhile?

When you enter through the gates, you have a nice 2 mile drive up to the Ticket center. You have to then go in and buy tickets. I dont think you can buy tickets just for the Gardens and Greenhouse. I think you pay for admission and you get the House, the Gardens/Greenhouse and Winery. I could be wrong, but I think the price is for the whole thing. But rest assured, you NEED to see inside that place if you are there, not just the Gardens and such. To see how the elite in this country lived during the Gilded Age will make your jaw drop. That place is magnificient. You can get a little pamplet to help tell you things about every room, or get a self guided tour by a Headphone set, which will cost you a couple $ more. It does give you a bit more info than the pamplet.

true... to go to the biltmore house and not go inside would be a tragedy.

and, blueridge parkway is nearly 500 miles long, can you drive the 1st 20-30 miles and see everything worthwhile?

now come on :) of course you cant see everything worthwhile in 30 miles. if that was the case it wouldnt be 500 miles long. :) of course nobody is suggesting you drive the entire thing at one time. as you would imagine, not all parts are equally impressive, but still worth seeing eventually. the parts in the very northern nc and southern virginia are somewhat forgettable as are some of the parts right around asheville, since asheville sits in a valley and its elevation is only slightly over 2,000 ft as opposed to blowing rock which sits closer to 4,000 ft.

the best parts....

southern tip near great smokies to pisgah - that whole area of the NC mountains is amazing, not just on the BRP. highlands and cashiers are the home to tons of awesome waterfalls. this section also has the highest point on the BRP at 6,000ft. close by you have sapphire valley, pisgah, great smokies, nantahala river gorge, french broad river gorge.

http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/map5.htm using this map, if you are in the asheville area and only have time for a few hours i would go south on the BRP towards the great smokies, but it doesnt really get good until you get about 20-30 miles south of asheville (see part about asheville sitting in a valley)

to the north of asheville you have mt mitchell, the highest point east of the mississippi at 6,600 ft. but the peak itself doesnt really stand out as it blends in with the many mountains in the area over 6,000 ft. to be honest, i havent been on this section in a long time. highway 221 from marion to linville is a much cooler drive and it goes right by linville caverns.

my fav part of the BRP is from linville falls to slightly north of blowing rock, mainly because thats where i went to college, as did many others on this board. anyone from appalachian state can tell you about every square inch of the parkway in that area. sights include linville falls, grandfather mountain (much cooler to see than mt mitchell), the viaduct, rough ridge, thunder hill, price park and of course my personal fav... hebron rock colony.
http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/map4.htm

another really nice part of the parkway is way up in virginia in the skyline drive through shenadoah
http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/map1.htm

you've touched upon one of my fav subjects here flash, seeing as how i was a geography major from nc, through app state in the nc mountains, with a specialization in physical geography (mountain building, erosion, geology, rivers, watersheds etc....)... so yeah, dont get me started unless you want to be bored out of your mind.

I'm assuming many of you here have Comcast as your local cable provider. And, I wanted to know if ESPNEWS HD is available to you all, because I can't seem to get it. I'm only getting normal ESPNEWS. If so, what channel is it on?

I didn't know comcast was here. If you want more HD channels go with DTV.

You get a lot of your league pass games in HD that way too. When i had league pass w/TWC it sucked ass. Everything was in SD.
