I think this is a good move by Josh if he goes. From everything I've seen, he's a smart kid--so he should have no trouble adapting. With no money currently available on the NBA FA market, he has to accept the mle from someone, which is probably below value (I think Childress is a more skilled player than Turiaf). There are a handful (2 handfulls?) of International teams with owners willing to spend seemingly unjustifiably large amounts of money on guys (10m year for Carlos Delfino), so Josh definitely stands to make more. MLE is what, 5.8m per? Delfino's 10m was after taxes (owners pick up that tab) and likely with some additional perks (car, housing).

I think that if he goes he will be a super star in Europe and would benefit like Anthony Parker did.

I also think that Walt is right. He's only get the MLE in the NBA but he's starter material and is worth more.

I was on the GB and realized Delfino's 30m/3 year reported deal is actually 8.5 m Euros/3 years which is close to 14m net USD or 22m/3 NBA gross salary. I think the reported offer for Childress that I've heard is 25m/3.

Take the money and run!

just like soccer. jump leagues for the best offer, even if it means playing in an inferior league. too bad they dont have a world-wide champions league in basketball where the top nba teams played against the top teams from each league in europe and other continents. then childress could feel like he was still competing at the highest level. but whatever, it's his career. sucks for the hawks. good for us.

this is funny if it happens. finally someone telling owners and gms to stop treating RFAs like hostages.

The Bobcats should do with Childress what they attempted to do last season with Varejao. Worst case is what, he doesn't take it? Like thats a problem.

Force the Hawks hand, I'm not so sure they would match.

That's a little different though as I think the Hawks would be ecstatic to pay him the MLE, which is all we can offer. Chil can get his now in Europe.

Smart move by his agent IMO. Hawks had the upper hand due to no money being available...this takes it out of their hands, and in a big way. They don't even have the option of matching a Euro team's offer, so they'd basically lose him for no recompensation.

I agree I think that's a smart move from him and his agent. But I didn't expected this.

I like Childress as a player, probably not so much as Slam but still. But we are deep at SG/SF position I cannot see how we would distribute the minutes. so good luck in Greece or anywhere.

i may be in the minority here but i wouldnt pay chill more than the MLE. he is a role player, a good one, but still a role player. if he can get more, good for him. if he proves to be worth more down the road than a MLE type.... touche. i'd take my chances though.

A quick look at recent market rates - which more often than not, dictate player worth.

Maggette got $10 mil a year - I think he is at least comparable to Maggette, but I also think that Maggette is now SERIOUSLY over paid.

Salmons gets around $5.5 mil a year - I think that he is better than Salmons, and Salmons is paid around what he is worth.

Hammer is getting around $4.5 mil a year - I think he brings more skills than Hammer, but Hammers deal is at least front loaded.

Nocioni gets around $7 mil a year - I think that he is better than Nocioni

Jamal Crawford gets around $9 mil a year - and I think he is comparable to him and probably better as a team mate because he knows his limitations and doesn't hurt his team.

Luke Walton gets around $5 mil a year - and he is no doubt better than him.

It will be interesting to see what someone like JR Smith gets. They are comparable, but IMO I would rather Chil because he is not nearly the distraction that Smith tends to be.

I'm obviously biased though. I've always liked Chil. He actuall reminds me a lot of Pippen. I agree with Fats - he's a role player, but the type of role player who you can rely on to carry the load every now and then if your star player has an "off" night. I think that he would be a great fit on our team.

I would pay Childress more than the MLE. Not a whole lot more, but at least 8m a year. He contributes in a lot of ways, knows his limitations, doesn't have an ego... he's a great 6th man, could earn 25mpg on any team in the league.

25 mpg as a good player off the bench is worth 8 million a year these days? Wow how times have changed. He would be another average player on our team full of average players.

I said he'd earn 25mpg on any team in the league, regardless of depth, not that any team should pay him 8m a year for the privilege. For us, he'd be a legitimately great 6th man (playing probably more than 30mpg), and that is worth 8m a year, especially for someone who's still young.

slam - i cant believe you just compared chill and jr smith. lol. ouch. smith is a one-dimensional, grade A moron and will be lucky to get any offers, let alone something in the MLE range.

However...he's damn efficient and if he grows up a little, could be a very, very good player.

Big IF. yes.

They have the same base skill set. They can both handle the ball, play pretty good D and are athletic. Smith is more of a gunner but both can play some point.

Keep in mind I also said: "I would rather Chil because he is not nearly the distraction that Smith tends to be."

We can't compete with the Olympiacos offer, but any chance we can somehow snag JC now that Chukwemeka is on his way out?
