Bobcats Sign Landry To Offer Sheet (merged)

Post#1 » by Bassman » Tue Sep 9, 2008 1:08 pm

One more time to look at this before we get any closer to training camp:

WHY NOT MAKE AN OFFER TO CARL LANDRY?

I know he's not the perfect player for us, but he would be much better than our current options. I just don't see May staying healthy, and even if he does, he will be limited in the skills and ability he can bring to the 4 (especially on defense). Davidson looked better in Vegas, but what happens in Vegas....! Davidson will be a good sub but he still lacks the ability to play defense or rebound with the big boys.

Landry doesn't have the ideal length of our dream PF but he proved to be very productive in his minutes for the Rockets. I see him as a bigger, stronger, even tougher version of Crash at the 4. Given a starter's role I think the blossoms into a quality 4...never an all-star but a key part of our first unit.

Houston is making the right noise about moving on without him. They are over the cap and nearing luxury land. Why not use some of our MLE to snare him?
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I still think something is in the works and that's why they haven't gone after him. Perhaps I'm just too optimistic.

That seems reasonable, FFP. I just hope that the front office doesn't drive the fan base crazy in the process. This lack of a # 1 PF is starting to become a mania, isn't it?

Now, if I could just have a 21 year old James Worthy or Horace Grant, please. That would simplify things a lot!

Does Charlotte even have an MLE? For some reason, I didn't think they did. If they do, GET LANDRY. He makes too much sense. I wouldn't go full MLE, but I would go near it.

I suppose we do not technically have the use of an MLE if we are still under the cap (which we are). But perhaps if we make an offer on a RFA that places us OVER the cap the terms of the MLE must apply. That's a guess. In any case we have the ability to make an offer...AND SHOULD!

if you are under the cap by less than the MLE then you can use the MLE.

I hadn't looked at the salary sites since Mek's salary has been calculated in...was thinking we were around 64 million. DE is showing us near 60 and I'm not sure if that's including Harrington or not. Regardless, Fats is right; if you're within the MLE to the cap it's still available. We are and it is.

All the more reason Bob and MJ won't use it (since we are so close to the cap). I understand you need to retain cap flexibility and would prefer making a trade, so why not explore a deal on a S&T for Landry?

I suspect LB has been told "this is what you've got...make it work". So we go to battle with a wounded slug, an under-talented young reserve and a french fry just waiting for his ticket to the NBDL. I can't wait....

    Bassman--You are right on what we should do now! Houston is shedding $$ Novak is going to the clippers and if somebody doesn't pickup Landry he on his way out of the country.. Why not trade Hollins for him? What in the world is Larry/MJ/Bob Thinking?
Ok they are big on Frenchie, but if he drinks Ensure 24/7 and adds 30-40 lbs, it will take 2-3 years before he is ready. That leaves us with McMay and Ive heard hes recriuting Dancers from the uptown cabaret for Bobcats Cheer leaders. Also the question is can he produce. Thats points/boards
in 2008-2009 82 games??? Also how good is Davidson. Its now or never ? need 10/6 20 min every night..

Landry is our #4 starter and can give us 16/8 25minutes, then May/Davidson finish the minutes 16/10 together. Bassman I hope Somebody is reading this..

Just wandering thru, and as a Rocket fan here's my opinion on Landry.
As a player he brings excitement to the crowd and to the team. He hustles and when healthy explodes at the rim. However,he scores off someone else's work. He got the ball and made his own move to create a shot less than a dozen times all season. He gets abused by more physical players and overall is pretty weak defensively. As a energy guy off the bench he's fine, but he is nowhere close to being starter material. And the catch is when healthy. He's had 2 knee problems in the last 3 yrs,not a good sign.

Now as to whether Houston will actually sign him,who knows. The market for for reserve PFs seems to have been set at @$4mil/yr(esp see Turaif's contract.) The Rockets prob had in mind what they gave Chuck Hayes a couple of yrs ago, somewhere around $2mil/yr. Landry's agent seems to think he's worth the full MLE. Just my opinion but I believe the Rockets are waiting for some team to come up w/a sign and trade for either a vet PG or a decent reserve C. I say this because of Rockets' GM Morey stating there woud be no contract offer til Landry gets his knee fixed, yet also saying if somebody offers a contract Hou will match. Coud be hardball to drive down price,or could be Morey saying the knee isn't really serious let's talk trade to other GMs.
Complicating matters is second rd pick Dorsey hasn't signed, prob because he and his agent are waiting to see what happens w/Landry. If Landry can parlay 1/2 a rookie season into $4-5mil contract,Dorsey's going to want to do the same. Neither of whom wil beat out Scola as starter who in 2 yrs will want his. My guess is Rockets match anything under $3mil and anything over $4mil they let him walk, the area in-between is a toss-up.

You guys will never get him, hell I dont think we will probably get him. His agent is acting like a you know what, and it's getting ridiculous. But I agree with you guys, he would be a decent fit for you guys.

Meh...This is Anderson Varejao all over again. Landry will stand strong until 2-3 weeks into the season then sign the exact same deal (with another team, out of spite) that Houston offered at the beginning.

We need to make an offer now! We need to get a decent PF that can give insurance for McMay. But unlike the AV offer sheet we got to make an offer that Houston can not match

I like Landry also. However, if we dont have plans to land a solid starting PF via trade, then I think I'd rather take my chances with May and Davidson. I may be overly optimistic, but I think Jermareo Davidson can put up better than Landry type numbers if he was our starting PF. The only draw back is he is foul prone on Defense. And I am one who does not believe the FO is working on any deal to obtain a major PF since they drafted Ajinca with our 2nd 1st round pick. They would not have done so had they not envisioned him being a major contributor within the next couple years. There is nothing coming down the pipeline deal-wise unless a trading partner would want Ajinca as someone to develope over the next couple years and who has the personnel to afford to let him become seasoned. I'm just not feeling anything on the trade fronts. We have who we have and will play with them - for better or worse.

As I said on our board, I expect for Morey to match the offer, but if he doesnt, you guys are getting a good player who will bring energy to your team.

though hoopsworld isnt much of a credible source, id say thats paying a little less than what hes actually worth. 3.5m per year would be the perfect salary for landry. hes a high energy, athletic kinda guy who isnt afraid to do some dirty work to get the ball. he exploded in the second half of his rookie year and his numbers would improve even greater if he was given more minutes (around 24-27mpg). thats what most people dont notice, that he only played 16.9 mpg last year and he was still averaging 8 points 5 rebs a game.

i expect rockets gm to stay true to his word and match any offer that any team has offered landry
