REPORTS: McDYESS TO CHARLOTTE

Hoopsworld headline:

[b][According to several reports, the Charlotte Bobcats are on the verge of signing Antonio McDyess . . . .

More details as they become available
/b]

While Hoopsworld is not the Gospel, they do check sources pretty well. COULD THIS BE POSSIBLE??? :D

How big would getting McDyess be for this team? A quality big, a veteran to help this puddle of puppies, a legit PF to put beside Okafor!

And who's to say this would be the only move?? If they pull this off, then execute a significant trade, we could have a really different team, molded into the style LB wants. Let's see what happens....

from bonnell. a little journalism lesson for us, how nice...

Yeah (and everyone else on this board):
Let me educate you on the silliness of pack journalism:
You see something on ESPN's website. It's an Associated Press story. It says the Bobcats are planning to sign Dwayne Jones. It says they'd also like to sign Antonio McDyess. And because it's on ESPN's web site it's a REALLY BIG DEAL!
Here's what happened:
1. I wrote on our website that Jones would be a Bobcat. Don't know if Mike Cranston -- a good reporter for AP -- read that here or found it out on his own, but it wasn't exactly a revelation by that point.
2. Last night, in the pre-game media availability, I asked Brown about McDyess, mentioning Rod Higgins had already told me he'd contacted McDyess's agent. Brown gushed over what McDyess could do here, but he acknowledged it was probably a longshot he'd sign with the Bobcats. And I wrote it in Wednesday's Observer.
Now, AP mentions that, it ends up on ESPN's website, and suddenly old news becomes a big deal.
It's silly.
Bottom line: They're trying all kinds of things to get better. They need to be trying all kinds of things because right now they're lousy (you know that, I know that, and Brown sure knows that).
We'll see what happens.

I do respect Rick B more than some, but Rick somehow thinks he's the most connected reporter to this team. He's reasonably tight, but he doesn't necessarily get every scoop. Information gets out from other sources, and perhaps there is more fire since Rick's conversation with Higgins yesterday.

Rick assumes that the report is being generated from his information. The ESPN story/note in and of itself would not indicate the Bobcats are "on the verge" of signing McDyess, as the Hoopsworld blurb states, so is there other info? Who knows!

I'm on Miami and have seen a thread about this in one place--the Detroit board.

Add NYK-Old coach gets a former knick
Orlando-active board
General board-general rumor
Transaction board-possible transaction.

Every single other board in here and they are making a big deal of it, huh?

And I wrote it in Wednesday's Observer.

And ESPN/AP wrote about it in their game recap, Tuesday night:

http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=281118030

Now, AP mentions that, it ends up on ESPN's website, and suddenly old news becomes a big deal.

Or ESPN/AP mentioned it, then it ended up on the Observer's website the next morning as a "Bonnell scoop!"

It's silly.

It is.

FWIW, McDyess is exactly the type or temporary stopgap we need at the 4. Rebounds (more importantly he boxes out), scores at a good % and can stretch the defense a little with some range and he's a got a veteran mind that we'd use as a coach on the floor. He'll tell guys when to rotate on defense and offensively he'll set good picks, get out of the way otherwise.

And I can't imagine he'll ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever be signing here. We would've signed him already if the interest was mutual.

Well I'm being sarcastic about every other board but there should be much more talk here about it then those places. We as a fanbase are apathetic.

Yea, but dude-- it's been that way forever. I don't think there's ever been much of a fanbase for the Cats. Charlotte is totally apathetic. We can hardly watch the games in the triangle, but the majority of the residents are, in season 5, unaware that we have an NBA team. I do my part. I talk the team up. I wear Bobcat gear. I went to games when I could.

What I don't get about you though, is that you come HERE to alienate people. WE ARE THE BOBCAT FANBASE. You watched a home game lately? You need to go on the streets of Charlotte and rant at those people... they're the ones that are apathetic.

I don't know how much McDyess can help, I figured he was over the hill years ago, so I'm interested in signing him now just to see how much he could help us.

As for why he would sign with us, I don't know. As I mentioned in another thread, if he signed with us then we waved him down the road, would he be eligible to sign with a contender then? If something like that is possible, he could come here, play for us and stay in shape, get paid, and wait till later on in the season to see which team looks the best and needs his services, then get waived and go sign with them.

It seems like it wouldn't be legal, or at least it would be one of those under-the-table sort of deals that could get us in trouble, but I don't know really.

First of all he would DEFINATELY help us, that said, I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes...

NBA teams don't have to set playoff rosters until the day after the regurlar season ends, I suppose their is nothing to prevent us from cutting Mcdyess and him joining a playoff team. But I don' think the NBA would approve of such a thing. And why would he risk it? for the oppurtunity to play with us?

there's a date during the regular season where a player can be cut and still play for another team during the playoffs, we used this date as one of the reasons we cut McMinus, saying that we wanted to let him play for a playoff team if one of them was interested. Not sure what the day is though.

from the coon faq: "If a player is waived after March 1, he is ineligible to be included in the playoff roster of any team that signs him for the remainder of that season."

Yeah, but I wasn't sure how it was handled if a team signed a player DURING the season, then later cut him. I wasn't sure if he was subject to different rules.

As for why McDyess would do that, I said why. If we worked out a deal like that, McDyess could still end up signing with his championship-caliber team later on in the season; the benefits would be that he could still wait and see where the teams fall, and sign with the team he thinks has the best chance to win the championship, he would still be playing so he wouldn't end up out of shape, and he'd still be getting paid, possibly more than some of those championship-caliber teams would be willing to offer.

The only downside would be that, by playing, he runs the risk of injuring himself, in which case those championship-caliber teams probably wouldn't be interested in him.

It still might not make much sense, but it's a least some possible reasons why he might sign with us.

I really want this to happen....cause i think this give us the push we need...maybe get to .500...still dont think its going to happen....if it does we are really really really coming out of pocket...this deal would have to blow half the nba out the water....what other reason would he come here?

I see what Hamilton is saying. LB goes to him with a sweetheart deal. We sign him (because we have the cap room to) and ask him to help out, mentor our bigs and teach them some tricks with the promise to look to trade him before the deadline to a playoff team.

LB says that Dice is like a son to him - maybe there is enough trust there between them to get that done?

that seems like a long shot....plus if we really start to play better we would need mcdyess for the whole season...if LB is like a son to him maybe we can rent his services for a year?

I really don't see Antonio as a mentor-type player. I think he would be a "lead by example" guy, and being a part-timer (out before March 1st) just doesn't fit his personality or his situation. According to those who know him well, McDyess is a very rooted guy, who gets attached to place and people and doesn't like to move around. IF he chose to sign with Charlotte I've got to believe it would mean he intended to sign a multi-year deal to be with Larry and connect to this team. McDyess could be both the BIG we we need at the 4, and the "GLUE" player that ties everyone together into a functional team.

I agree this scenario seems highly unlikely, but stranger things have happened in the league. Could it be the tie between Brown and McDyess is so much like father-son that he'd come to Dad's rescue? Is this why Brown talks about how reluctant he is to contact Antonio directly? Think about it, all you fathers out there (my son is 23). We want the best for our kids. But if we had a business that could use our son's talent, yet he'd likely go further and make more money with another company, would you want to make first contact asking him to join your company? I'd say not. But if our son called us, said he really wanted to work for our company (despite the obvious advantages elsewhere), it would be based on HIS desire more than ours. We'd love to have our son in the family business! I wonder if Larry's thinking is along these lines? Maybe Antonio's called daddy L and they're talking.

I still think they will seek a trade for Wallace, even if we were to sign AM.

Pretty sure all those scenarios will work (signing him then waiving/trading before the playoff cut day).

I wonder if Dyess has the smarts and inclination to be a coach? The one thing that LB can offer that no one else could top would be for this to be a stepping stone to an asst. coaching job. We can offer the full MLE too, which is as much or better than anyone else can.

Agreed with those who say he'd be a huge help to us.

finally, someone who can teach okafor how to score in the post.... and better yet, how to stretch the defense with a baseline jumper.
